Jenny was sitting in the family room, reading a Padd, when Donny showed up with a newspaper and sat down.
“Did you know that parents of the special needs kidern usually wait till the kidern is 9 years old before letting the kidern decide when to rejuve?” Jenny asked.
“Interesting,” Donny answered.
“The kidern has till the day before their 21st birthday to decide to rejuve and still be treated like a kidern, otherwise, they’d have to pay for the rejuve and be treated like a volunteras afterwards,” Jenny kept going.
“Are you trying to change my mind?” Donny asked.
“No,” Jenny answered. “I just think we should know what we’re getting ourselves into.”
“When Ms. Katherine came to ask me if I was willing to take in Pam for three days, I was thinking you were going to be asking me for a pet next, not for a kid,” Donny told Jenny.
“Don’t be, surprised if we end up getting a pet,” Jenny commented.
“You don’t want me to give you a pet too?” Donny asked.
“Of course not,” Jenny answered and Donny sighed with relief. “We might not have a choice depending on the rank of our first rejuve.”
“What do you mean?” Donny asked putting down his newspaper.
“If they assign us a voluntaras, than it’s up to us if we get a pet. If they assign us a medicalos, than we can only choose size and age, and if they assign us an I, we have to give them whatever they want, and if they are as high as me we’ll be lucky if they don’t ask for a litter,” Jenny answered.
“Let’s just hope they don’t assign another you,” Donny joked.
“Well since Pam is the only one that equals my rank, I doubt it will happen,” Jenny finished.
“Speaking of Pam,” Donny started. “Did she tell you what ship they were assigned too?”
“No,” Jenny answered. “If I had to guess, I’d say the Enterprise.”
“Why do you think it’s the Enterprise?” Donny asked.
“The Enterprise has the best robotics program in Starfleet,” Jenny answered.
“I didn’t know Mark was a robotics expert,” Donny commented.
“He’s not,” Jenny said. “Pam was just getting started in Robotics when Martha was conceived. You didn’t think you got assigned the ship with the best teaching infirmary in Starfleet a week before I turned 8 was a coincidence, did you?”
“I guess not,” Donny answered.
“Her rank is just as high as mine; therefore, she would get the same treatment,” Jenny finished explaining.
“Speaking of rank, why did you make sure she was just as high as yours or even higher? I thought you liked being the highest rank,” Donny asked.
“You had to see the scan,” Jenny explained.
“I guess Martha’s scan really got to you,” Donny said.
Jenny looked like that’s not the answer, but the holophone rings just as Donny’s about to say something.
“Williams’ residence,” Jenny answered the holophone. “We’ve been waiting for you to call us…. Ahem …. Send them right over.” Jenny hung up.
“Them! I thought we were getting only one rejuve,” Donny said surprised.
“We are,” Jenny answered. “Remember the other quarter we had the choice of taking.”
“You mean the one on the penny floor that we decided not to take because we wanted to have guests enjoy their rooms,” Donny answered. “What about it?”
“We’re moving there,” Jenny answered.
“The rejuve wants to watch spankings that bad,” Donny said looking upset, “Or the rejuve’s a penny,” Donny realized. Jenny nodded. “Why did you say send them over?”
“They’re sending two officers to help us move,” Jenny said getting out the boxes.
“You didn’t use your rank to get them to help us?” Donny inquired while getting things to put in the boxes.
“No! They volunteered. They never get to see the inside of these quarters,” Jenny explained.
The interns were sitting in the cafeteria almost all looking down.
“Why are you guys so down?” One of the attendings asked while walking by.
“They are mad at Jenny for what happened to Dr. Martinez,” Emily answered.
“Yeah the attendings aren’t that happy about his punishment either,” He said. “But even the attendings know that it wasn’t Jenny’s fault.”
“Yeah but she was the one who suggested punishing him in the first place,” One of the interns said.
“And he has a wife and a kid,” A different intern added.
“Jenny didn’t decide what his punishment was,” Emily stated.
None of the interns looked like they bought it.
“Are you guys sure it’s the punishment that angers you, or are you worried this could eventually happen to you?” The Attending asked.
Everyone except Emily looked down instead of answering.
“That’s exactly why this needed to be brought to light,” The attending responded, “So that this mistake doesn’t happen again.”
“But why does Jenny have to be here at all?” Another intern asked. “The only jobs rejuves usually do are babysitting not showing off their medical knowledge and getting an Attending in trouble.”
“If she doesn’t do it now she never will. She cannot become your age. And let me remind you that in a month, you guys will all be doing residency somewhere, meanwhile, Jenny will be starting 1st grade all over again. When she starts her residency, you’ll already be 3rd year residents. When she becomes a third year, people who were below her will be attendings, and unless a cure is found, she’ll never become an attending herself,” He said and then paused to see their reactions. “And as far as Doctor Martinez is concerned, he was the one that got himself into trouble, and if you don’t believe that, than here is the medical scan of Pam that Jenny saw the night she came in,” He said dropping down the paper version of the scan.
The interns all had shocked looks on their faces except for Emily, who was the one that saw it first the night Pam came in.
“Have any questions?” The Attending asked.
No one spoke.
“Good,” He left.
“Where are you putting my stuff?” Jenny asked one of the ensign ranked volunteers as she was taking one of the boxes to the master bedroom.
“Because of your rank, I assumed you get the Master,” she answered embarrassed.
“That’s Sir’s room. I get the biggest of the remaining three bedrooms,” Jenny explained. “I don’t need as much room as Sir anyways.”
“That’s right,” Donny said bringing in Jenny’s rocking chair and putting it in the guest bedroom.
“Yes ma’am,” the volunteer said while going after Donny.
Jenny unpacks the kitchen supplies as the volunteers moves the boxes, too heavy for Jenny to carry, into the kitchen.
After Jenny and Donny finished unpacking their rooms, Jenny sat on the couch exhaustedly. “I guess we still need to go buy supplies for our new arrival,” Jenny said.
“You don’t need to,” The male volunteer lieutenant responded. “We brought all his things over from his previous pennies home.”
“I thought pennies don’t bring anything from their previous cycles except their birthday presents,” Donny said.
“They don’t,” Jenny answered. “His parents are being sent on a mission and can’t take him with them. He is only two weeks from finishing his cycle, so corrections wanted us to take over.”
“I better have a discussion with corrections about who we are supposed to be assigned,” Donny said.
“APP was the one agreeing to have you assigned a penny,” The female volunteer said. “We’re heading out now. Good luck. Corrections are expecting you whenever you’re ready.”
“Thank you for the help,” Donny said walking them to the door.
“Thanks for your help,” Jenny said almost forgetting to. “I hope you liked the place.”
“You’re welcome and thank you for letting us check out this place,” She added. “If you ever need any more help…”
“We’ll call you. Next Saturday would you two like to have dinner here,” Jenny offered forgetting to ask Donny who actually nodded regretting he didn’t offer first.
“Yes thank you,” they answered and left.
“Ready to pick up our first born,” Donny asked Jenny.
“Sure,” Jenny said getting up from the couch, “But I think I’ll need a nap after the welcome home spanking myself.”
Donny nodded in agreement.
Jenny and Donny walk into the corrections department on deck 5 of the starship. As they walk in, a couple with a 6 year old female penny starts walking out smacking her butt on the way. “You will obey us or you’ll be spanked over and over,” the father says as the mom spanks.
They walk up to the receptionist. “Hi Ensign Williams,” She said. “Hello Jenny. I don’t see you on the rejuve schedule. Was there a mistake?”
“No. I’m not rejuving for a month,” Jenny answered. “We’re here to pick up our new penny,” Jenny explains.
She looks through the Padd. “Ah. Here you are. Congratulations, the information on your new penny is on this Padd,” she handed Jenny and Donny each a Padd. “Have a seat,” She added.
They both take a seat in the waiting area and start reading the Padd.
“This is interesting,” Jenny started. “If he didn’t turn himself in, no one would have known it was him.”
“His grades are excellent,” Donny said while reading. “He had practically perfect behavior till almost three years ago on his 9th birthday.”
“Wait, he’s eleven,” Jenny did the math real quick.
“I guess so,” Donny said.
“Williams’ family,” A worker called from the doorway.
Jenny gets up right away anxious to find out about this age issue and walks quickly to the door with Donny trailing behind.
“Thanks for coming,” The worker said letting them in.
“Why are you assigning us a penny three years older than me?” Jenny ignored the pleasantries and went straight to the point.
“Jenny!” Donny warned.
“It’s ok,” The worker said. “We needed someone fast to take over and you two were the only ones available.”
“I guess that’s ok. I’ll just play the disciplinary sister,” Jenny said disappointedly.
“Well,” he started, “We were thinking you could do the motherly duties.”
“What?” Jenny asked. “No. I’m not old enough to even do it as a sister.”
“I guess we can find a wife for Ensign Williams,” The worker suggested.
“Fine, I’ll do the motherly duties,” Jenny answered reluctantly.
Donny chuckles, and Jenny elbows him.
“Are you ready to meet your son,” The worker asked as he reached the door.
Jenny takes a deep breath. “Yes,” Donny and Jenny said at the same time.
The worker opened the door to an 11 year old hard time penny sitting on a bed waiting anxiously but quietly.
“Hello Eric,” Donny said picking him up. “We’re your new parents.”
“Hello,” He answered a little surprised by Jenny’s appearance.
“Hi,” Jenny said while following Donny out the door. “This will be fun,” She added remembering her own experiences being picked up from corrections as a penny.
As they leave corrections, two parents start walking into corrections.
They take the penny turbo-lift (no kidern allowed) to their place.
“Here’s your new home,” Donny said opening the door. “And here’s your new room.” Donny walks into the room designed for boy pennies and then Donny put Eric down on his bed.
“Nice room,” He said sincerely.
“Now it’s yours,” Jenny said enthusiastically. “Now it’s time for your welcome home spanking,” Jenny says getting the hairbrush.
“Yes ma’am,” Eric answered. “How are we doing it?”
“Call me mom,” Jenny ordered. “The only way to do this will be for you to bend over the bed.”
He bends over. “Do I have to call you mom?” He asked.
“I guess ma’am will work for now,” Jenny said remembering her own problems calling Donny dad. As Jenny puts her hand on his back to start, she realizes his body is warmer than usual. “Are you ok?”
“Yes,” He answered.
Jenny starts spanking him hard with the brush on his sit spot after 5 minutes. “Please pull down your pants.”
Eric obeys reluctantly.
While Jenny was surprised by his obeying, she kept spanking for another five minutes and then pulled his briefs down and finished up for the last 5 minutes.
“My turns up,” Jenny said leaving.
“Have a good nap,” Donny said kissing Jenny’s forehead.
Jenny closes the door behind her and heads to her own room and crawls into her queen sized bed for her nap.
Jenny wakes up and climbs out of bed and goes to the kitchen. “Evening,” Jenny said to Donny.
“Morning,” Donny corrected.
“Morning,” Jenny said surprised. “I slept that long.”
“Moving can be so exhausting,” Donny suggested. “After I put Eric to bed, I fell asleep myself.”
“Speaking of Eric,” Jenny started, “How are we going to deal with the discipline?”
“I was thinking you can take care of his morning regular spankings, and I take care of the evening, and we both deal with any misbehavior as they happen,” Donny suggested.
“Easier for you to say,” Jenny said. “He fits over your lap.”
“There is that cute ensign in Engineering,” Donny joked. “I bet she has a big enough lap, and we can ask the captain to marry us.”
“When Robots have feelings,” Jenny said. “I guess bending over the bed isn’t that bad,” Jenny said, “Especially since he does it so willingly.”
“I wonder why he is so obedient,” Donny wondered out loud.
“It is probably because he is already on his 5th out of 15th cycle,” Jenny explained. “Worst case, they learn most of their lessons by the 3rd cycle.”
“True,” Donny said. “You better go give Eric his wake up spanking before work.”
“Yes sir,” Jenny said heading for Eric’s room. “Morning,” Jenny said turning on the light. “It’s time for your morning spanking.”
Eric looked like he woke up from a hangover. “Morning,” he said while shading his eyes. “I don’t feel good.”
“I’ll be right back,” Jenny said going outside his door and closing it. “Computer medical scan Eric’s bedroom and display the results on my Padd.”
“Downloading… downloading…,” The computer said. “Ready.”
Jenny looked at report. “Computer, is this scan as accurate as the medical scanners in the infirmary?”
“They are the same scanner,” The computer answered.
Jenny walks back into Eric’s room with a stern look on her face. “Into the corner with you,” Jenny said pointing to the one with the cornerstool. “I was going to just give you a hand spanking, but since you lied to me about being sick, I’ll just use the family paddle.”
Eric had a look on his face that Jenny recognized right away. “Come on let’s go,” Jenny said more gently.
“Ok, I’ll go to the corner,” he said getting up and starting to walk to the cornerstool when Jenny stops him.
“No, we’re going to the Infirmary,” Jenny changed his direction.
Jenny walks Eric into the infirmary from the penny entrance. She walks him to the nursing station. “I’m admitting Eric Williams to the penny pediatric ward,” Jenny told one of the nurses. “Which room can I put him in?”
“We need 5 minutes to get room 203 done,” The charge nurse answered checking the board, “But you should check with the chief resident.”
“I’m sure he would agree with me,” Jenny answered. “Where can we wait?”
“In the waiting room,” She answered rudely. ”You know where to go.”
Jenny took Eric to the waiting room shaking her head upset with the nurse. “Don’t worry. You’ll be better in no time,” Jenny said reassuringly.
Just as Jenny sets up Eric in the room the chief resident shows up and calls her outside of the room. He was standing with the charge nurse. “What is this about you admitting a patient without asking permission from me first?” He asked sternly.
“He is a sick penny who needs to be admitted,” Jenny answered. “I didn’t think you would mind.”
“I read his records Jenny,” He responded. “He never has a fever. The scanner always shows up nothing is wrong. Short while later he is playing as if he was never sick. He is faking his illness. He has been faking illnesses since he was 9 years old to avoid spankings starting with his birthday spanks.”
“I’m not so sure,” Jenny answered. “Let me put it this way, if he was any rank but a penny what would you do?”
“I’d admit him for observation,” He said reluctantly. “Alright, you have 24 hours, but if we find Romulans in the Neutral Zone, you’ll have to explain your actions to the medical board.” He left.
“What does he mean by Romulans in the Neutral Zone, we’re nowhere near the Neutral Zone?” The charge nurse asked.
“He’s talking about a doctors saying, ‘If you see photon torpedoes coming out of the Neutral Zone, look for Romulans not Vulcans.’ In other words, look for common things first. He basically is saying, if the kid is lying, it’s my butt that’s on the line,” Jenny explained.
“Oh,” She said smiling. “Do you need anything?”
“Yes,” Jenny answered. “I need you to monitor his vital signs every hour instead of every 4 hours and take a thorough history.”
“Yes doctor,” She said writing on her padd.
“I just wish it was that easy to get a shower and change of clothes. I don’t want to leave Eric till I start rounds, but I need to clean up,” Jenny whispered.
“We have a shower for parents of patients and some extra scrubs, if you like to use them,” The nurse said.
“Thanks,” Jenny answered taking her up on it.
4 hours later, Jenny was standing at the nursing station with a fellow intern. “I don’t see why you should be allowed to admit Eric. He’s lying,” She said.
“I believe him,” Jenny defended.
“Well hey; I got a planet for sale. It’s the third planet from its largest hottest star. It is 71 percent water. It has 7 continents. Its inhabitants believed they were the center of the universe at one time. It’s a great deal at 500 credits.”
“Are you trying to tell me I’m gullible?” Jenny asked.
“Yes, anyone who can believe this kid is gullible,” She responded just as the charge nurse walked up to Jenny.
“Eric has a temperature of 103.5,” The charge nurse interrupted.
“What has his symptoms been and are?” Jenny asked.
“When Eric arrived he complained of sensitivity to light, aches and pains all over his body, dizzy spells, and fatigue but no fever was seen and no problems were in his medical scans. That’s been the same each hour till now, he hasn’t complained of any symptoms and he’s playing with the few toys I gave him and he wants to know when can I take him to the penny play room,” The charge nurse answered.
“What did you say?” Jenny asked.
“That I was too busy at the moment to watch him,” She answered, “But the real reason is because I can’t let a kid with an unexplained fever into the room. I need an order of Tylenol.”
“You lied to him,” The intern commented with a chuckle. “325 mg of Tylenol would be fine.”
“Wait,” Jenny said. “Don’t give him anything just yet. But keep checking his vitals every hour though.”
“As an intern, you need the chief resident to overwrite my orders,” The intern said.
“As Eric’s guardian, I can deny him any medicine I think would endanger him,” Jenny said.
“Tylenol wouldn’t endanger him,” The intern responded.
“Doesn’t matter as long as I’m his legal guardian,” Jenny reminded.
When Jenny was away, the intern used her phone to call Donny at home. “Can I speak to Ensign Williams please?”
“Speaking,” Donny answered.
“Can I give Eric Tylenol?” The intern asked hoping to get Jenny’s objection overruled.
“What did Jenny say?” He asked.
“’No’,” She answered, “But it’s just Tylenol.”
“I’ll leave all medical decisions to Jenny,” Donny answered. “Goodbye.”
4 hours later, Jenny was standing in front of a computer at the nurses’ station with a scanner in front of her when the charge nurse showed up.
“His fever broke,” She said, “So I asked if he wanted to go to the penny playroom.”
“And he said he’s not feeling well, right,” Jenny said.
“Yes, how did you know?” She asked.
“I guessed,” Jenny answered doing something on the computer. “Use this scanner on him.”
“Alright,” She said while leaving.
“Come on how did you know?” One of the nurses asked.
“The pattern,” Jenny answered. “Every time he was sick he had no fever, but when he had a fever he was playing like any other rejuve his age.”
Both the chief resident and the intern showed up when the charge nurse came back a few minutes later. “Eric has Brackies disease,” She said.
“The virus that makes patient asymptomatic when a patient is fighting it with a fever and symptomatic when the fever breaks,” The attending realized while hitting himself on the forehead with his palm. “How did you know?”
“I didn’t,” Jenny answered. “I upgraded the scanner to the one on Brackmon.”
“How did you know to upgrade it,” The intern asked.
“Three weeks before his ninth birthday, the ship was on Brackmon. The ship left before he became symptomatic, and our standard scanners don’t test for the diseases on Brackmon,” Jenny explained. “I just put two and two together.”
“Dang you Jenny,” The intern said, “Why do you always have to show us that we are fools?”
“I was fooled too,” Jenny said. “I thought he was lying to get out of a spanking, when he first told me he wasn’t feeling well.”
“Then why did you look more into it?” The chief resident asked.
“It was his facial expression. I had only seen that look on 3 other people’s faces; my sister, my brother, and the women in the mirror all had that facial expression the night my parents died,” Jenny explains.
“You mean grief,” The intern asked confused.
“No, Hopelessness,” Jenny answered. “We already grieved for our parents’ death long before they passed, but the rejuvenator was our last hope. When they died, there was no more hope. When I told Eric I didn’t believe him, he had no more hope. That’s why I knew I needed to stop trusting the scanner and start trusting him.”
“Oh no Jenny, you better read this,” The chief resident said handing Jenny a Padd.
Jenny reads quickly. “I better go tell him.”
Jenny walks into his room. “I’ve got good news and bad news,” She said not happily.
“The good news is you think I’m healthy,” He said. “The bad news is that I have to suffer the consequences of saying otherwise.”
“No. The good news is I know what’s wrong with you. The bad is there is a penny version for the cure,” Jenny explained.
“You really know what’s wrong?” Eric asked surprised.
“Yes. You caught Brackies disease on Brackmon,” Jenny explained. “Sorry we didn’t find it sooner, but our scanners don’t test for the diseases on Brackmon. The worst news is that the treatment is going to make you feel much worse before you feel much better, so you are going to have to stay in the hospital for the remainder of the treatment which is about 2 weeks.”
“Life of a penny,” He said.
“Not necessary,” Jenny answered.
“Even if a non-penny gets spanked, they don’t get injections designed to be extremely painful,” He stated.
“Not necessarily,” Jenny answered.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“We had a doctor who messed up real bad on a patient but wasn’t criminally liable for it,” Jenny started explaining. “Because of his actions though, it was decided that he should be rejuved as a voluntaras but when it comes to discipline and medicine he would be treated like a hard time penny including a weekly spanking reminder to behave. He added to it that he would have a chronic illness that makes him need weekly shots, so not all rejuves have the pain free medication when they get sick.”
“Can’t you just rejuve me to cure me, or does rejuves not cure it?” He asked.
“Rejuving you would cure you. Worst case you’d have to be rejuved twice to get the virus out of your system, but it is better to try this method first,” Jenny explained. “If the court finds out you took the easy way out they might not give you conditional completas.”
“You mean I still have a chance at it,” He asked surprised. “My previous mom and dad said I don’t qualify.”
“They said that after you started saying you were sick,” Jenny explained. “Now that we know what was causing you to be sick is discovered, you’re on your way to completas, but only if you take your penny medicine, not rejuve early.”
“I guess I have no choice,” Eric answered not very happy.
“Don’t worry, your dad or I will be here when we’re not on duty, and when I’m on my shift, I’ll check on you during my rounds. Everything will be ok,” Jenny said soothingly while rubbing his back.
Two days later, Jenny goes to Eric’s hospital room at 5am to find Donny sleeping in the parent’s recliner, and Eric sound asleep in his bed. “Morning,” Jenny nudges Donny. “Why don’t you go get a couple hours sleep in your real bed, and then get ready for work?”
“What about you?” Donny asked. “Aren’t you supposed to get ready?”
“The nurses are letting me shower here,” Jenny explained. “I figured you need some rest. How’s our son doing?”
“He’s been behaving. I don’t know how though, those shots look more painful than their traditional vaccines,” He responded.
“Poor kid, but I hope it’s worth it. He should qualify for conditional completas after this,” Jenny said.
“What is a conditional completas, is it a new rank?” Donny asked.
“No. It’s just a quicker way of becoming completas. It was started after Melody Johnson became a completas,” Jenny started explaining. “It’s for non-violent non-murder crimes, where the criminal has shown true remorse and consistently has good grades and is really well behaved. The discipline’s the same as a hard timer, and if they do something seriously wrong, they’ll be turned into a soft timer or worst hard timer, but if nothing goes wrong, they will grow up all over again. I envy him.”
Donny chuckles and kisses the top of her head. “I’ll make sure he is considered for it,” Donny said. “I’ll replace you at 1800 hours.”
“See you than,” Jenny said sitting on the recliner.
5 minutes later, one group of interns and an attending shows up. “Eric Huston was diagnosed yesterday with Bracies disease,” One intern explained.
“Eric’s last name is Williams, and he was diagnosed with Brackies disease not Bracies disease,” Jenny told them.
“I’m sorry,” The intern said. “He’s on a two weeks treatment of Mallies.”
“Is there anything new?” The attending asked. The intern shook his head no. “Ok onto the next patient.”
One of the interns dawdled behind. “Aren’t you coming with us?” She asked Jenny.
“No. I’m not on duty,” Jenny explained.
“Then why are you here?” The intern asked.
“I’m taking care of my son,” Jenny said while not knowing that Eric woke up.
“Congratulations on your new son. I’m sorry about him being sick,” She said.
“Thank you. Me too,” Jenny said and the intern left.
After the intern left, “Mommy,” Eric called.
“Yes,” Jenny responded surprisingly.
“Can I have a glass of water?” He asked.
“Sure.”
