WEOD 2018: First International Workshop on Engineering Open Data
held in conjunction with ICWE'18
June 5, Cáceres, Spain

# About

More and more data is becoming available online every day coming from both the public sector and private sources. Indeed, the open data movement promises to bring to the fingertips of every citizen all the data they need, whether it is for planning their next trip or for government oversight. Most of this data is available via some kind of (semi)structured format (e.g., XML, RDF, JSON,...) which, in theory, facilitates its consumption and combination.

Unfortunately, this is still far from reality. Our society is gradually opening its data but not building the technology and infrastructure required to enable citizens to access and manipulate it. Only technical people have the skills to consume the heterogeneous data sources while the rest is forced to depend on third-party applications or companies.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, practitioners, stakeholders and users of Open Data. The focus of the workshop will be on practical engineering approaches (a) to design and develop means for promoting the consumption of Open Data and, by leveraging on well-known existing techniques (e.g., conceptual modeling, data mining, data intelligence, etc.), (b) to design and develop composition mechanism that help combining Open Data sources.

# Call for Papers

WEOD solicits high quality submissions describing original and unpublished results. The topics of interest for the workshop include practical engineering approaches to design and develop means for promoting the consumption of Open Data and to design and develop composition mechanism that help combining Open Data sources.

A non-exclusive list of topics follows:

 * Development of techniques to promote the access to Open Data
 * Schema discovery and composition
 * API development for Open Data
 * End-user development to facilitate the consumption of Open Data
 * Existing Open Data initiatives and ecosystems
 * Monetization strategies for Open Data
 * Discussion about how to publish Open Data
 * Visualization techniques for Open Data
 * Data analytics for Open Data

# Important dates

 * Paper submission: April 1, 2018
 * Author's notifications: April 28, 2018
 * Camera ready submission: May 15, 2018

# Submission Information

WEOD is intended to have two sessions:
 * paper-based session, where authors are invited to submit regular papers of 12 pages covering one or more workshop topics, and
 * hands-on session, which solicits demo/short papers of 6 pages based on a case study including scenarios specially built to illustrate the discovery, consumption and composition of Open Data sources. Please visit the workshop's website for more info on the case study.

All submitted papers must be formatted in accordance to the information for Springer LNCS authors at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html and submitted in PDF. Accepted contributions will be included into the ICWE 2018 Springer LNCS proceedings.
