Greetings EV Friends,
As mentioned at the SEVA meeting Yakima has still not decided if they will pave over their historic surviving example of a fully electric interurban railroad! It looks like this next week on Jan 20th (Tuesday) the city is scheduled to vote on the Yakima Valley Trolleys operating agreement and also may make a big decision on paving on 6th Ave where the tracks to Selah run!

I and a few other folks are already planning to head over-and-back Tuesday to show support for saving these big historic EVs! Just email me or call or text me (2O6)321.9164  to give me a heads-up if you want to carpool/caravan so we can figure out how many seats/EVs we'll need :)

10:45am Meet @ Snoqualmie Garage JAN 20 EV ADVOCACY ROADTRIP PLANS
If you wish to carpool or caravan over we'll meet up at 10:45 am at the Snoqualmie Casino Parking Garage (take Exit 27 off I-90). Head down the hill around the back of the casino and into the garage and drive up to the 3rd or 4th floor of the garage where we'll meet near the EV Charging stations. We'll plan to depart by 11 in case there are slowdowns over the pass. Address is:
37500 SE North Bend Way, Snoqualmie, WA 98065

1:30pm CHARGING & LUNCH IN YAKIMA
We should arrive in Yakima by about 1:30pm and can take a look at the historic line to have a better idea of it. And we can grab some lunch near either the newest Yakima Winco Tesla Superchargers or the Electrify America Chargers at Yakima Wal-Mart.

2:30pm MEETING UP AT YAKIMA VALLEY TROLLEY MUSEUM
We'll aim to meet up at the YVT Museum & Carbarn at about 2:30pm where we can look at the historic EVs and equipment and make signs and discuss plans for the council meeting!
Address is:
306 W Pine St Yakima, WA 98902

4:30pm HEAD TO YAKIMA CITY HALL FOR COUNCIL MEETING
Or at 4:45pm join us at Yakima City Hall to support the trolleys at the council meeting. The meeting will start after 5pm but you must get their earlier to find a seat and/or register to speak.
Address is:
129 N Second St Yakima, WA 98901

Depending upon when we leave the Council Meeting we'll probably arrive back at Snoqualmie Casino around 9pm.

SOME MORE HISTORY
In the early 1900s most cities had thriving electric streetcar railways and interurban railways connected cities using electric trolleys. Unfortunately most of these were destroyed and replaced with internal combustion buses by the middle of the 20th Century.

Remarkably in Yakima, the last authentic and continuously operating electric interurban railway in the USA has soldiered on all these years to the present date! These heavy classic EVs are a sight to behold and run on 600 volts DC. The earliest YVT locomotive in the Yakima fleet was built in 1910 and still runs today - a testament to the lasting power, simplicity and reliability of electric motors!

The beautiful trolleys delight children and attract tourists from all over and offer rides in the city on weekends during the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Over the decades the lines going to other cities have slowly been torn up, but at present, the tracks still connect Yakima with the neighboring city of Selah making it a true interurban railway. The YVT is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently in the later stages of applying for National Historic Landmark status which would bring in Federal funding and should protect it.   https://yakimavalleytrolleys.org/index.html

Cheers,
Stephen J.

Thank you Stephan for the details. It's going to be 50/50 if I'm able to attend.

I like nothing better than a cause to get behind, peacefully gather and make your voice HEARD.

As American as it gets!  🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Quick question: who has authorship control over this beautiful SEVA wiki page? Found it poking around on the website and it gave me massive nostalgia

I would like to join in, but I have a doctors appointment that day. 6 months ago I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle and broke my wrist. It still hasn’t been fixed and I have a consult for surgery to pin the broken bone back together on that day.

I would really like to see the Yakima trolley preserved, from what I understand it is the last remaining running example in the world of this early 20th century electric trolley system. It seems more of a privilege to honor than something to be tossed aside. When in Seattle (I’m in south Shohomish County) I make a point to ride the Monorail. This summer I hope to visit, and ride both the Pine Street Line and the Selah Lines. Until last year I didn’t even know we had such an historic EV trolley system in Washington!

Please keep the SEVA list advised.

Thanks for the kind words of support Paul and I wish you a speedy recovery for your wrist!
Yes the YVT is a rare intact example left in the country of an early electric interurban trolley system and just a short drive over the mountains here in our own state!

ZOOM meeting option to give testimony at the Yakima City Council meeting...

It is possible to join the council meeting by ZOOM and to address the council remotely that way and to encourage them to put off the paving on 6th and focus on other streets or to do it in stages over a few years instead of all at once in order to save such a rare and historic attraction which brings tourists to the city from out of town (and literally all over the world).

HERE IS THE LINK TO INFORMATION FOR ADDRESSING THE COUNCIL VIA ZOOM OR OTHERWISE:

If any of you have relatives in Yakima, Selah or even just Yakima County they often get first priority for talking at the Council meetings. Each person gets just 2.5 minutes to speak.

Cheers,
Stephen J.

Is there a way That whoever takes me, I can pay them in gas money when I get paid for my Social Security disability. I feel like a bum without it being from Alaska having the hitchhikers over there. I have weed if that is a payment it’s legal you know and I’m not smoking it so I can get a job. Just putting that out there putting those vibes out there I don’t want a free ride. I want to earn it.

Looks like we've currently got 8 people and up to 3 EVs planning to make the day roadtrip over & back Tuesday Jan 20 to support the Yakima Trolleys at the City Council Meeting:

  1. Stephen
  2. Ryan
  3. Sofia
  4. Ron
  5. John
  6. Angela
  7. Mark Y.
  8. Charlie

We have a Cybertruck, a Lightning and a Model X so it’ll be a gasoline-free caravan and there are still seats available. If anyone else is interested, just meet us at the Snoqualmie Casino parking garage by the EV Chargers (Level 4?) at 10:45am this Tuesday.

Stephen, looks like it will just be me. Angela just learned that she has to advocate and be with one of her church members.
See you at 10:45 tomorrow!

Sofia is dropping out; I may have COVID as my best friend just got it and we hung out several days ago. :(

I don’t want to quit so if I can have the ZOOM link that would be amazing.

Chicken soup and I’ll be good to go.
