Dear colleagues,
Urban forest cover is declining across the UNECE region — but together, we can change that.
Urban forests are more than trees — they cool cities, improve public health, reduce energy costs, foster biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience. Yet, their potential remains underutilized across the UNECE region.
Join us at Forest2025, the 83rd session of the ECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI), where a panel of international experts, moderated by Ms. Anh Thu Doung (Global Cities Hub), will discuss how to deliver local and national action to support urban forests and to reverse this negative trend.
In particular, the session will focus on:
- Integrating urban forestry into national policy
- Integrating urban forests into national plans under the Rio Conventions
- Gathering data on urban forest cover
Linked to these discussions, we’ll present key resources to support action:
- The Quick Guide for Scaling Urban Forestry with National Policy
- Urban Forestry as a Rio Convention Delivery Mechanism
- The Urban Forest Compass, a draft framework for standardized assessment, proposed for piloting at the city level
This session is part of agenda item 4(b) of the COFFI agenda — Urban Forestry Work.
