The aspidistra became a sort of symbol for Gordon after that. The aspidistra, flower of England! It ought to be on our coat of arms instead of the lion and the unicorn. There will be no revolution in England while there are aspidistras in the windows.

Interestingly, did you know that many Aspidistras are pollinated by slugs? Fascinating fact there for you Aspidistra lovers! It's so fascinating to know that this plant has been through so much and is still doing really well in Jack's modern home. And I'd like to state, here and now, that I'd love this to be the start of a campaign to get Aspidistras back, on On the Ledge! I think they're wonderful houseplants and everyone should have one. But why are they so hard to get hold of?

On my Instagram page you'll see the container it's in. It's hard to explain, but it's clay and it's shaped like a person holding a basket. It feels like there's something old about it, something kind of primeval. I don't know. I just loved it! The person's mouth is open and they have big eyes. You can look at the photo! But anyway, their legs are crossed and they're just holding this and they're holding this plant and so I thought that is really powerful! I like that! And I was beginning my journey, this long doctorate process I knew was not going to be an easy one, so I thought, "Well, I'm going to get this little guy!' And here we go!

And finally on the Internet front, without wishing to blow my own trumpet too much, I'd also recommend that you take a look at my show notes. I put them together for every single show and they go online at janeperrone.com and all of the links in there to further information I can absolutely guarantee contain great information about houseplants. I also post on there various other bits of information which you may find useful.

Once in class the base of the branch had to be scored or split to allow the branch to be inserted into a 3-inch florist pin holder. The lines of the branch established the line of the design. What I learned as I moved through the course was that the branch I chose proved to be too wispy and busy, not really strong or hefty enough to compete with the weight of the leaves and flowers we used. Thankfully the teachers gave lots of helpful comments, explanations and hands-on assistance, so I probably learned more by having to compensate for the size of the branch.

With the branch in place we turned our attention to leaf manipulation. We began trimming, folding, cutting, braiding, weaving and looping our leaves. This activity could have consumed the entire two hours of the class. My teacher Betsy demonstrated an interesting technique using an aspidistra leaf. She applied peel-off UGlu adhesive patches along the back spine of the leaf and lay medium weight florist wire down the spine. Next she trimmed an inch-wide strip from the length of a second aspidistra leaf and used it to cover the wire. With the wire in place the leaf can be then be folded, scrunched, twisted or otherwise manipulated and the shape will hold.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! And I use that exclamation point with great precision. Your last Rant on overused plants was wonderful. The surgery sharpened a delightful edge which I very much hope lasts at long as the scar tissue.

Aspidistra elatior belongs to the Asparagaceae family and has several popular varieties. Most common aspidistra has shiny, corn-like, dark green leaves that can grow to about 60 cm in length. This type typically produces purple-brown, small flowers near the base of the plant.

Like any plant, aspidistra elatior likes to be placed in a spot where the sunlight exposure, soil nutrients, temperature, and humidity are perfect. Be mindful of the following specifications when choosing a new home for your aspidistra:

An aspidistra elatior plant can be propagated very easily. The key to its successful propagation is to work carefully, as this plant has very fragile and delicate roots that can be easily damaged with rough handling.

Replant the parent plant back into its original pot and water the newly divided plant thoroughly. Wait until its roots are formed, and the plant shows new growth. It may take a while for aspidistra to fill out the container and eventually become an independently established plant.

Historically, the tendency on the part of the right-wing factions that currently hold sway within the Labour Party to accommodate conservative positions for electoral gain has often come at the expense of marginalized communities. Admittedly, Starmer has not himself pursued an actively transphobic line, but his unwillingness to take a principled stance on these issues has made it easier for the Conservative Party to normalize the culture war.

Drainage, drainage, drainage! I repotted mine with gravel at the bottom. Also the saucer could hardly hold any water, so it never really sat in it. Light and drainage is key, but more importantly drainage. I grew mine became a 12 foot monster!

gorilla stuff....yucky stuff - used it on an outdoor project cuz it claimed to be exterior weather proof...didn't hold up to a texas summer. I've always used Titebond exterior for all wood projects. I was thinking of mixing sawdust w/the Titebond to fill in the rough/missing parts as it can be stained to match the wood around it...I'll check on that Cascamite powder - where would I find it?

The vision, though, is hardly sunny. Where Animal Farm has a gentle, humorous tone about the vagaries of politics, 1984 has a much darker vision, conveying an indelible image of a dystopian future. Winston, the protagonist, is ground under by the state, and the book holds out little political hope.

Step 4: Place the paper clip end of the string in the pasta pot. (The paper clips will ensure that the string stays in the water.) Take the other end of the string and, using your finger, bury it about one or two inches into the soil of each plant. Press firmly on the soil to hold the string in place.

My marvelous evergreens! Flowers draw admiration and attention to the garden through much of the year (and some evergreen shrubs are most noted for their flowers). Brightly colored leaves dominate fall. But as winter takes hold, the evergreens take center stage as they contribute structure and interest.

Thank you all for your comments! Unfortunately, Squarespace was experiencing some technical difficulty for several days after I put up this post, and any comments made during that time were lost. I appreciate each of you and wish you all the best! Deb

The narrator cannot show his support for the Burmese natives or easily leave his duties and responsibilities to the British military. The essay is the place where he admits his disgust for imperialism and his wish to no longer have any part of it. Readers are given a clear window into the persistent conflict he experiences between his position and his conscience.

Question: I moved into my home at the end of August. The previous owners had the lawn nicely landscaped. On either side of the driveway are creeping juniper plants. On one side the juniper is a nice, deep green. The other side started turning yellowish (not brown). My driveway faces the north. Someone told me it might be root rot. Is there anything I can do to save the juniper? E.G., Fort Worth.

This quote from Big Brother highlights the party's ruthless nature. They are not interested in the well-being of their citizens, only in maintaining their own power. As the leader of the government, it is actually Big Brother's wishes that are primarily in focus throughout the novel. As a result, it is reasonable to read all statements like this not only as an expression of party goals but also as the personal ambition of Big Brother himself.
