I'm sorry to hear your new photos are not showing in the Canon Camera Connect app. If you press the Playback button on the camera itself are you able to see the new images there? Also were the images show in JPG or RAW format?

Hi there!
I am having a similar issue to EmilyA1. The pictures I take are showing up on the camera and I have the phone and camera on the same WiFi, so they have successfully connected, but my most recent pictures are not showing up in the app to import (caveat: I've essentially just dusted off the camera and redownloaded the app after years of not using).

I would recommend that you first, reset the wireless settings on the camera. In the camera Tools (wrench tab) menu, select [Wi-Fi function], then press the [DISP] button. You should now see a general settings page. Select [Clear Wi-Fi settings]. I have attached a document to help walk you through the setup from scratch HERE.

As mentioned by Wadizzle, your photos are not recoverable. If you accidentally deleted them then immediately tried to recover them, you'd have more success. Though if erasing/deleting involved a low-level format of the memory card, that may no longer be possible to recover either.

If you hardly take any photos during the year, set up a schedule to at least import once per month. Though you have to answer the following question: "Are you willing to lose up to a month's worth of photos?" If the answer is no, then schedule imports more often.

For my most crucial photos (those that cannot be re-created), I have five copies of each photo. Where two of those copies are in separate offsite locations. Less crucial photos still have three copies; one copy being offsite.

Those who shoot a lot will have a few TBs worth of original images/videos. Keeping 3 copies of that will be tricky to maintain without some automation. If a lot of images are edited, edits need to be propagated to all copies as well in some automated way or it will be hard to tell what was edited and when.

For hardware failures, I would suggest using low-level drive replication, such as Storage Spaces in Windows or LVM on Linux. This will protect data if a single drive goes bad. I would also advise against hardware RAID - when a board dies in these devices, the whole thing is gone and most manufacturers will just shrug it off.

If you erased images on a memory card, as opposed to an SSD drive, you may still be able to recover some, even after a while. Use recovery software such as Recuva, RStudio, Active Undelete, etc. Set them to low-level scan and make sure Canon raw files are selected (e.g. .CR2).

This might be true, if the media does not continue to be used. Deleting a file doesn't actually remove it. It only marks the first bit where the file is stored as "available" for the OS (camera) in this case to use for storing more images. Once you start overwriting this space marked as "free" the chances of recovery become almost non-existent. The time and more writes which occur subsequently pretty much diminish any hope of rebuilding the blocks of data comprising a file. One overwite is bad, but once it becomes more that, chance for recovery is less than 1% unfortunately.

Unlike SSDs, memory cards don't use TRIM, so data remains there until overwritten and many of them try to use new areas for writing to reduce wear because memory in those cards can be written to only so many times. What you are saying is true, but depending on usage pattern, some files may still be recoverable. I was able to restore a few files after a few months of using one of the cards, for example. Worth a try.

Tracytribe,

Ensure that you have selected on the software to transfer all photos instead of just select ones. If the issue persists we recommend uninstalling the software and then doing a re-install from the app store.

Would you mind creating a new thread please, since this one is 4 years old we want to be sure your concerns are more visible to other Community Members! If needed, HERE'S a link to see how to create a new thread.

I am old and stupid. I googled and googled and can not find how to transfer my pictures on a SL1 using an HDMI cable to my laptop. I need idiot proof instructions. I am so lame I cant even figure how to load any canon software including DPP4 on to my laptop. Treat me like an idiot like I am. Think computer and camera mentally challenged. Or trying to explain what I want to a 6 year old.

Find the EOS Utilities and click on it to start your download. Once you've got downloaded and installed, you can use that software to download your photos over a USB cable. Your manual should tell you the best cable to use. I personally would go with their recommendation.

So new computer does not recognize the camera. old laptop recognizes but says dcmi is empty. looks like a sd card reader is the way to go. If anyone knows how I can download the canon utilities to my laptops it will be greatly appreciated. I get to the canon downlads and canon recognizes my operating sytem but there is no link or button to click on to start the download.

Hello all. Yesterday I shot a bunch of photos for a graduation. I shot some before, during, and after the event. When I got home and looked at the SD card, I noticed only the shots I took before the graduation were on the card.

This was very puzzling, because throughout the day I was going back and looking throught the pictures I took through the camera itself. Why would certain batches of photos just disappear like that?

I have tried many recovery programs, none of which have helped (all on Mac);

I just don't understand how some CR2 files could go missing even after clearly seeing they were recorded to the card. Can someone point me in the right direction of what to do? or suggest a better recovery program?

I did not format it prior to using it. There were some old photos on there still, with plenty more space to shoot about 330 raw files. I'm playing it safe and not adding or deleting anything further from it.

Have you looked at the files sizes of the images that you can access? Try to figure out a rough average size for each of these files and multiply by the total number of all shots taken, assuming they were all shot as CR2 files. Can, or have you opened the card in the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer? If so, does the amount of used disk space seem to correspond to the amount of images taken? This also assumes that there wasn't other random image or data files left on the card.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken, when you view the images later on the camera's LCD you're not actually viewing a CR2 file. What you're seeing is a separate JPEG thumbnail that the camera automatically generates.

Don't how much difference it really makes but did you have the camera set to "save as" RAW only or RAW+JPEG? Have you tried to download the files via USB connection to the camera only, or do you have a card reader? Have you tried to download them to a Windows machine or to a Mac only?

Hello, I took your advice and did some math, it seems like the disk space is 100mb short of what it should be. If one CR2 file is approximately 25mb, I don't imagine the 40-50ish files are hidden in some way.

330 RAW files at an average of 25MB each would total 8.25GB. 100MB would be only like 4 RAW files and that's less than 2% of the estimated total. To me that sounds like the "missing" files are still there. Though that doesn't necessarily mean they are recoverable. But I wouldn't give up hope too easily.

You'll probably get better results by opening a new thread instead of re-openig a 5 year old post. Please also include some more information on the specific gear you're using and details of the exact problem you're having. And stop using the affected memory card immeadiately!

I took some self-portraits today using the EOS Utility as a live viewer and a the canon remote shutter button. All seem to be working fine, I could hear the shutter working and the flash was activating so I'm sure it was taking the photos.

However when I went to view the images afterwards none of them seem to be on my memory card.

Some photos I took earlier this morning using the remote shutter button but not with EOS Utility are on the card, so I think the issue must be connected to EOS Utility.

Really hope I can retrieve my images somehow. Please help!

Thanks

Where is the EOS Utility saving photos? There is a setting in the utility that sets that. Reconnect and power up the camera again, and start up the EOS utility as if you were going to take pictures again.

Once everything is ready to go, go to the Main Screen of the EOS Utility and look for a Preferences button. This is where you set the folder for downloaded pictures to be saved. I am guessing that setting will tell you where the images might be saved.
