The FDNY certification exams generally consist of 20 multiple-choice questions, which are presented on a touchscreen computer display. All Fireguard License exams have a time limit. Based on the number of questions, you will have a 30-minute time limit to complete the test. In order to receive a Certificate of Fitness, you must pass with a score of at least 70%.

An FDNY Certificate of Fitness is only valid for the person to whom it is issued and may be utilized anywhere throughout New York City. A $25 new application fee is required, and a $15 renewal fee for those already holding a Certificate of Fitness. Generally, applications are reviewed and processed within 1-2 days.

Course Description

The F01 Fireguard Certificate of Fitness license is required by individuals, employed by building owners, who are responsible for watches in buildings with temporary malfunctioning fire detection and fire suppression systems. Certification is issued by the FDNY after passing an exam (70% or higher), consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions.

Our 3-hour test prep course prepares you by going over parts of the NYC Fire Code that are covered on the test. These sections (401.3, 408, 901,906) of the Code define specific duties of fire guards performing duties when mandated fire protection systems are out of service.

F01 Practice Tests

After going over the material covered on the test, we then go through practice tests issued by the FDNY. These help you prepare for the types of questions that are on the test so you will be better able to answer all 20 questions within the 30-minute time limit.

Fireguard is a "Protected" Fire Rated Aboveground Storage Tank with projectile, impact resistant and stream hose test ratings. This is a steel double wall aboveground storage tank with interstitial monitoring capabilities and a 2-hour fire rating. It can be built in horizontal and vertical configurations. These tanks may also be built with or without multiple compartments for multiple fuel storage. Each tank contains 3 inches of light-weight insulation material which has 75% less weight than traditional concrete insulations. Fireguard tanks are built to Underwriters Laboratories, UL-142 and UL 2085 specifications. Fireguard tanks also meet the CARB, California Air Resource Board, testing requirements for air emissions. Fireguard tanks are built in accordance with the Steel Tank Institute's F-941 standard.

While gypsum boards are stronger in one direction, they may be installed either vertically or horizontally on both wood and steel studs. If the boards are to be used in a fire rated assembly, then use the board orientation that is stated in your specific rated assembly.

According to the Gypsum Association publication GA-231, gypsum board should not be allowed to get wet; it should be covered if stored outside. However, there are situations where the board could get wet during transportation/storage or when installed in-place. If the board gets wet in an installed in-place situation, first remove the sources of moisture. Lay the board on a flat surface and allow it to dry out thoroughly. Once the board is dry, examine it for paper-to-core bond and mold and mildew growth. If installed, examine for nail pops and sag (in the case of ceilings). Paper-to-core bond failure and board sag are irreversible damage, and the board should be replaced. For nail pops, place a fastener an inch above or below any popped-up nail.

There is not a fire rating on an individual board. The fire rating is based on an entire assembly (studs, board, fasteners, etc.) being tested together. Please consult the Gypsum Association GA-600 Fire Design Manual or UL Fire Resistance Directory for specifics on a particular fire-rated assembly. Placement of control joints are determined by the design professional. When they are not designated, the requirement for ceilings and walls is the same. A control joint should be installed every 30 feet when there is not perimeter relief. When there is perimeter relief, control joints can be installed every 50 feet.

Fireguard tanks are thermally protected double-wall steel cylindrical or rectangular aboveground tanks. Each Fireguard that Highland Tank builds is UL labeled and meet or exceed the requirements of UL-2085 including: a two-hour full scale pool fire test, a hose stream test, a ballistics/projectile test, a vehicle impact test, and an interstitial communication test.

As you are taking your security guard training, you can at the same time train for your fire guard certification. Fire guard primary duty to prevent fires or to notify the Fire Department by calling 911. The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) administers and enforces building fire code policies to promote fire safety and prevention. Certified by the FDNY, licensed fire guards play an important role in enforcing building fire code policies and promoting public safety. Different types of buildings and settings where fire guards are deployed require different types of knowledge, so the FDNY has developed different certifications.

An individual who wants to become a licensed fire guard in any of these areas must first past a test administered by the FDNY. Each license has its own exam. United Security Training Center, is approved to accept Wordforce1 training vouchers. Workforce1 is an NYC government sponsored job training program. Approved candidates receive vouchers are good for free 8 Hour Pre-Assignment, 16 Hour on the Job Training fire guard training and NYS security guard license.

This coursefollows the 29 CFR standards established by the Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA). Most construction workers and security guardpersonnel working at construction sites are required to take thiscourse. It provides instruction on preventing hazardous situations fromoccurring in the construction site and provides guidance on knowing what to dowhen accidents happen.
