Note: The exact same steps can be used for Opera. You can also use Mozilla Firefox and do the same steps to get to the desktop YouTube site. The only difference is that the Menu icon is on the bottom right, rather than the top right. You select that and the drop-down menu delivers the Desktop Site.

Original article, November 20, 2023 (09:19 AM ET): YouTube has been on a monetization push recently, as it began blocking ad-blockers and pushing users to buy YouTube Premium. That move makes sense in many ways, as the platform needs to make money to survive and compensate creators who depend on the platform for their living. But some other actions by YouTube make less sense. Users are now reporting that YouTube has begun slowing down its desktop website for some Firefox and Edge users, and we are perplexed.

Yesterday, I clicked on a YouTube mobile link on my desktop which opened up the YouTube mobile website. It seemed rather harmless, but after that one visit I always ended up on the YouTube mobile website on my desktop no matter how I access it. I tried manually entering YouTube desktop URL, accessed it from Google search results, opened it from a bookmark, and even restarted the browser, but nothing worked.

After grinding a good half an hour, I managed to solve the problem and vowed to never click a YouTube mobile link again, ever. If you are stuck in a similar situation, then today I will tell you how to stop YouTube from opening the mobile website on the desktop.

To disable Shorts on YouTube's mobile or desktop site, look for the "Shorts" section and click or tap the "X" icon. On the iPhone or Android app, either use an old version of the YouTube app or tap the three dots for each Short in the "Shorts" section and choose "Not Interested."

If you're a desktop user, getting rid of Shorts from YouTube's computer site is as easy as selecting an option. You click an option which hides the Shorts for 30 days, and when that time period is over, you click the option again to remove Shorts for another 30 days, and so on.

YouTube is the largest video streaming website primarily focusing on Android and iPhone users. The smartphone apps are most popular for watching videos. Surprisingly Google does not offer any desktop apps for using in Windows and Mac. The only option for you is to open the website in browser and watch videos. However, you can follow some tricks to install YouTube app in Windows and Mac. This is the same case with Gmail and learn how to install Gmail as app using Chrome and Edge browser.

Though Google does not offer YouTube desktop apps for Windows and Mac, the website is a Progressive Web Application (PWA). Below is the formal definition of PWA as per Wikipedia, which is self-explanatory:

You can disable the autoplay policy entirely by using a command lineflag:chrome.exe --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required.This allows you to test your website as if user were strongly engaged withyour site and playback autoplay would be always allowed.

You can also decide to make sure autoplay is never allowed by disabling MEI andwhether sites with the highest overall MEI get autoplay by default fornew users. Do this with flags: chrome.exe--disable-features=PreloadMediaEngagementData,MediaEngagementBypassAutoplayPolicies.
