Sophie is a young American woman who works for The New Yorker as a fact checker. She goes on a pre-honeymoon with her chef fiancé Victor to Verona, Italy. Victor is unmoved by the romance of Italy and uses his time constructively to conduct research for his soon-to-open restaurant, often neglecting Sophie. As Sophie explores Verona, she learns that thousands of trite "letters to Juliet" are left in Juliet's courtyard each year, written by women from all over the world seeking comfort and advice in love; the letters are collected and answered by a group called the "Secretaries of Juliet". Intrigued, Sophie asks to join them. Sophie later discovers an unanswered letter from a young girl named Claire Smith written in 1957, begging Juliet for guidance on her relationship with a boy named Lorenzo Bartolini. On a whim, Sophie answers the letter, and within a few days the now elderly Claire arrives in Verona with her barrister grandson Charlie. Claire and Sophie take an instant liking to each other, while Sophie and Charlie do not get along.

With a concept of imaginary letters being sent to an imaginary recipient, Juliet Capulet, all five musicians contributed to the writing of the lyrics as well as the music.[12] No overdubs were made, the album recorded in its entirety live in the studio.[13] One single was released from the album, the track "Jacksons, Monk, and Rowe," although it did not chart in either the United States or the UK.

The Juliet Club (Club di Giulietta) receives more than 6,000 letters letters of heartbreak and unrequited love a year. Some envelopes include the club's address; others simply say To: Juliet. Tatiana Schranz/Courtesy of the Juliet Club hide caption

I am madly in love. I know you get millions of letters with love problems written from around the world. I write today to ask you for strength. I live in India where my parents won't allow me to marry the guy that I love because he is from a different caste. He's the only guy I have felt so strongly about. I know I will have to fight my family for him and I am ready. I ask you only for strength.

The Juliet Club is housed in a small building on the outskirts of the city and is staffed by a small army of volunteers who call themselves the "secretaries." There are about 15 of them. They can read letters addressed to them in a wide variety of languages: Italian, English, German, Spanish, Japanese.

Secretary Elena Marchi says that they take their job seriously. Some of them come every afternoon to tend to the ceaseless outpouring of letters. They are grandmothers, young students, old men, divorcees, married folks, bakers, economists, scholars of literature, a ballet dancer.

"People start the letters often saying, 'Juliet, you are the one who can understand how I feel,' which is nice in a way, but very sad in another way, because they don't feel they can talk to the person next to them," says club manager Giovanna Tamassia.

hi,
i think it is the faith and hope people have in love that makes them write these letters.i sure would like to write a letter and hope for an answer.. but the point is Verona seems like a beautiful place. i would love to visit it atleast once in my life time.

The walls were lined with boxes of 50,000 letters received and answered for over 70 years, and there were boxes of letters yet to be answered, which were sorted by country of origin. We were each handed a letter from the U.S. & Canada box to read.

Letters increased as articles appeared about the Club: according to The New York Times March 3, 1993, there were about 2,000 letters a year; Washington Post February 14, 2002, there were about 5,000. Books began to come out in 2006 and 2008, each with its impact, one leading to a second Hollywood movie in 2010, after which letters began hitting 10,000 a year.

The 2010 movie Letters to Juliet garnered a lot of letters to the Club Juliet, but also some rotten tomato movie reviews. In it, a young American, played by Amanda Seyfried, goes to Italy and discovers an unanswered Club Juliet letter from 1957 written by a now elderly woman, played by Vanessa Redgrave, and answers it.

The Juliet Club dates back to the 1930s when Ettore Solimani, a guardian of Juliet's tomb at the church of San Francesco al Corso in Verona, started collecting letters people would leave at her grave, and Solimani responded as Juliet. However, the official Juliet Club was formed years later, in 1972, by a group of artists and scholars, including Giulio Tamassia. The group was fascinated by Shakespeare's character and her story and decided to use their passion to help others looking for guidance in their love life. Later, Tamassia's daughter Giovanna took over. The club received letters from worldwide, responding to them in various languages.

In Letters to Juliet, Sophie meets Juliet's secretaries, Isabella, Francesca, Donatella, and Maria, who are in charge of responding to all the letters. While these were fictional characters, Juliet's secretaries, also known as the secretaries of Juliet, actually did respond to the Juliet letters. Solimani was considered the first ever Juliet secretary.

In real life, there wasn't a small group of women responding to letters, but anyone who wanted to become a Juliet secretary for a day or longer could respond. Since there were so many letters to get through, the Juliet club needed as much help as possible, so allowing anyone to volunteer instead of only having a small group of writers worked in their favor. It also offered residents of Verona or tourists looking for something fun to do an opportunity to act as the Shakespearean legend.

Luckily for anyone hoping to spend a day giving love advice, The Juliet Club is still active. In June 2022, TikTok user travellingwithliberty documented her experience at The Juliet Club with her followers in a short video. According to the TikTok user, she volunteered there for a few days and met some incredible people from all over the world, all desiring to help others in need of advice regarding their relationships. The user shared that not all the letters are sad, as one writer confessed they are getting ready to propose to their love.

The Juliet Club website also offers information on how others can get involved. While the Juliet Secretaries can only respond to letters from the building in Verona, anyone seeking advice from the Shakespeare characters can write in from anywhere. The Juliet Club accepts old-fashioned written letters or, since the world is now in a digital era, they also accept emails. The club is located at Vicolo Santa Cecilia 9, 37121 Verona, where letters are left around the building, including the stone wall like in the movie and in the mailbox.

The 2010 Gary Winick film added some fictional elements with Sophie and Claire's stories. However, the letters to Juliet program is a real-life club that anyone fascinated with Shakespeare's story and the character should get involved with if they ever get the chance to stop by the Italian city. If not, they can always write to the club, as Claire did in Letters to Juliet. Eventually, even if they have to wait 57 years, they will get a response, which will hopefully offer some clarity on their romantic situation.

Everywhere I looked there were references to the story of Romeo and Juliet. Most notably a framed poster on the wall had the full text of the play in Italian written in a tiny font. Piles of letters to Juliet written on paper with flowers and hearts had been prettily placed in boxes and baskets all over the place. Even though it was small, the room felt light and airy as the girls chatted between themselves.

To her surprise, not only did she receive a reply with lovely encouraging words, but Jessica also discovered that the Juliet Club was awarding her a prize for writing one of the most beautiful letters of 2012.

Inspired by a professor in Verona who took it upon himself to answer correspondence sent to the fictional (and dead!) Juliet Capulet, The Juliet Letters is a song cycle in which each of the songs is a letter: love letters, begging letters, suicide notes, Dear John letters, breakup letters, and even junk mail.

GLENN DIXON: Well, I taught high school English for twenty years, and I had to teach Shakespeare to mostly compliant teenagers. And at the back of our textbook, the Romeo and Juliet textbook, there were a series of essays. And one of the essays was about these letters to Juliet. So, I had actually known about this for a couple decades, really.

BOGAEV: Yeah, I want to talk more about how you answered these letters. But first, I think we really need to know what was going on in your mind, and in your life, when you took off for Verona. Because it sounded like you were in need of a little love therapy.

BOGAEV: Okay, well, getting back to our excruciating examination of your love life. You went back to Canada after a summer of answering these letters at the office of Giulietta, and you went back to teaching Romeo and Juliet. What did you learn about love during the summer, and in answering some of your own questions about it that you could apply to Romeo and Juliet and your students?

BOGAEV: So, you go back to Verona, and this is where the person who seems to be the true love of your life just enters, stage right. Tell us about that decision to go back and answer love letters again.

I saw this movie and loved all the great shots of Verona and surrounding areas in Italy. I write letters to my grandmother, but that is typically about the only letter writing I do these days but it is a good way to keep in touch with her. Would love to visit this place in Verona. Stopping by from SITS!
