The SB data file contains all user settings and session data. It is a sqlite db file.

Location of Session Buddy data file:

Windows Vista, Windows 7:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases\chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

OSX:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/databases/chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

Ubuntu:
/home/<username>/.config/google-chrome/Default/databases/chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

Hi, Hans. 1st I'd like to thank you a lot for the excellent program you have created.

The thing is, my SB icon was gray and I couldn't open it at all. I then went to Google apps and thought if I reinstalled it the sessions would be recovered, but there's nothing in the list of saved sessions (there were about 150 sessions dating back over a year!)

Is it all gone forever or can I recover it somehow?

I am using XP and cannot find SB anywhere in C.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give and thanks Dani for starting this thread (hope you don't think I'm hijacking it!).

Hi Tom, I'm happy to help out. I'll need a bit more information to start troubleshooting this issue.

Can you tell me the names, dates, and sizes of all files in the following folder:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases\chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

Thanks,
Hans

Hi Hansifer, I am using Windows 8 and Session Buddy automatically updated and I lost my previous sessions. Is there any way I can get it back? Where is the file in Win 8? Thanks.

Salic, I don't know where the Session Buddy data file is on Windows 8. I would expect it to be the same or similar to the Windows 7 path, but I'm sure you've already checked that.

Upgrading SB shouldn't have reset your data file. Did you try restarting Chrome?

I searched for an "AppData" folder on my Win 8 computer and it didn't find it. I'm not sure if it was updating, but Session Buddy was asking me to review my Agreement terms, to enable it to access all sites, etc.. after that happened, it reloaded and everything was gone. I'm a bit sad. I restarted my computer and Chrome, that didn't help. Is there any way u can help me recover it? :) Thanks.

Try to navigate to the data folder directly rather than searching, since that folder might be hidden. I don't know what File Explorer looks like in Windows 8, but there's got to be a way to do that. Google it.

When you find the data folder, there may be a shadow copy of it for you to restore. You can check this with the following procedure in Windows 7 (I don't know how much of this also applies to Windows 8. Google it.):

- Shut down Chrome.
- Navigate back up to "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases"
- Right-click on the folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0"
- Click "Restore previous versions"
- This will hopefully show you a list of folders to restore.

Hi Hans, I hope you see this, and can help me with my problem when you have a moment.

I'm stuck on trying to recover my lost sessions data, but before I tell you how, I think it might be important that I tell how I lost my data to begin with. My Sessions Buddy extensions tab wouldn't open a new Sessions Buddy tab. I attempted repeatedly to do so, but ended in vain. I then proceeded to go to my Google Extensions Management. I disable the Sessions Buddy, without really thinking about what would happen, because I was in a bit of a rush, and re-enabled it just a few seconds later. When I seen the Sessions Buddy extensions turn blue again (it was blue when it wasn't working, I don't know if that information is relevant or not though) and when I clicked on it, it worked. But when the Sessions Buddy extension tab created the actually Chrome tab, all my sessions were completely gone. The previous sessions, and most importantly my saved sessions. Every since then, I've been panic'd, and searching the internet for solutions on how to recover all my saved sessions. That's when I stumbled upon this group chat thing (sorry, but I'm not all that familiar with Google+).

Getting back to where I became stuck when using your directions to recover my data.

Follow: "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases"
- Right-click on the folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0"

I proceed to go to my C: Drive, then to Users, next Username, and after I was in the Username file, I didn't see any AppData file. I then tried searching for it in the start  search bar, but no luck. So I was wondering, if you could help me go from here. Any help would be immensely appreciated!

P.S. Are you the one who created Sessions Buddy? If so, I would like to genuinely thank you for creating such an helpful, and absolutely amazing feature to use. I can't express enough how much it has helped me over the past two years or so. Thank you!

The AppData folder is normally hidden. If you paste the full path "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases" into the file explorer address bar and hit Enter, it should take you there.

Let me know how the recovery goes.

Cheers,
Hans

PS - yes, I created SB. Thanks for the compliments!

Hi again Hans,

Thank you so much for replying and getting me to the destination I needed. :) There is, however, another problem that has arisen. Once I got to the correct folder, the file was in the state of the image I attached. I honestly don't know where to go from here. I know you must be really busy, and I hate that my computer skills are lacking, but if you when you have the chance to, help me once again? Any more help would be just as much be greatly appreciated as the last.

Try this:

- Shut down Chrome. Make sure it's completely shut down by checking the Windows tooltray for the Chrome icon.
- Navigate back up to "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases"
- Right-click on the folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0"
- Click "Restore previous versions"

Send me a screenshot of the dialog that appears and we'll go from there.

Also, am I correct in assuming that currently SB is working fine but you're missing session data?

Yes, that assumption is indeed correct. The process in which to restore data is successful, but somehow or another, it wasn't the data that was originally lost. The sessions that were previously lost numbered somewhere between 800 to 1,100 saved sessions. I think I mentioned before that I've been using your excellent program for well over a year, not two in fact. But when I restored it, there were only sessions that I had just recently made after the lost. None of which were from before.

I don't think I'll ever recover that missing data, but for your tremendous help, I am regardless, very, very thankful. I know that I should export (which I only discovered after the lost) often, and thus have back ups. But also, for your time - I know it must have interfered with your daily schedule in one form or another, and for the time you've dedicated to helping me, that's really amazing!

P.S. Take care Hans, and thank you! :) Also would it be okay to add you in my circle for any future events?

OK, I think that file "14" (generated by the restore of the SB data folder) contains the sessions you're missing. You'll need to take a few extra steps to get Chrome to use this file instead of the file "28" which Chrome probably created when you re-enabled the extension.

1) Make a backup copy of the data folder ("chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0") for safe-keeping.
2) Shut down Chrome. Make sure it's completely shut down by checking the Windows tooltray for absence of the Chrome icon.
3) Rename the file "28" in the data folder to "28_backup"
4) Rename the file "14" in the data folder to "28"
5) Restart Chrome.

If this results in your original issue (SB tab won't open), then send the file "14" in the backed-up data folder to sup...@sessionbuddy.com and I'll try to repair it.

Let me know how it goes.

Hans, I am forever indebted to you! I can barely find the words to express my gratitude for helping me restore my missing data. Thank you 9.9x10^24 (that's a lot in chemistry nerd language lol). I'm actually on the verge of tears because a good chunk of the data that was lost was important for my comic I've been planning and writing for the past several months. But not only that, but other very important information to me. And for all your help, I'll never forget it. Even more so, I plan to now have a very special thanks in the creation of my comic when it gets around to publication! I can not thank you enough, Hans, just cannot. I was definitely about to give up, but you kept working hard on my behalf, trying to restore my missing data, and it succeeded. I know I must be rambling but I'm overly excited because of this fortunate turn of events.

You are my hero! From this moment and onward. :D Thank you!

Hi Hans,

I read through the previous posts but it didn't seem to help.  I too have lost many many tabs and previous sessions that I had stored in SB.  Here is what happened/what I did:

I seemed to have a virus in chrome that attached itself to Flash.  I would get ads in web pages that should not have had any ads, random new tabs opening all the time which tried to lure me to porn sites, and new tabs popping up saying Flash was out of date.

I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it.  All the extensions that I had prior to the uninstall still existed and functioned as expected (including the virus-ads popping up).

I deleted all extensions from Settings/Extensions and hitting the trash icon (I thought I recalled doing this in the past and after reinstalling SB the old sessions still existed so I didn't worry about doing this).

I reinstalled my extensions (Chrome Remote Desktop, Session Buddy, a FB Unfriend app, and one or two others).

The virus seemed to be gone but so were my previous SB Session history.

One at a time, I tried restoring two previous versions of the "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases" files using the restore method you described above.

Neither file gave me my previous sessions so I manually renamed the folder on the C: drive using a .old file extension and resored the folder from an automatic backup that backs up the entire drive every night.

Still no good.

I deleted "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases" folder and renamed the .old folder removing the .old extention and that's where I am now.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance.

Actually I think I got it.  I opened the DB files with notepad and was able to rename files as you outlined and I'm checking through things now to see if all my data is there.  By the way, thanks for creating such a great extension, as you can perhaps tell, I live and die by it!!!

2) Rename the file "1" in the data folder to "1_backup"
3) Rename the file "19" in the data folder to "1"
4) Restart Chrome.

It doesn't look like the data file updated at all (assuming you saved a session as per #1). This means we're looking at the wrong folder. Are you using a profile? Can you email me a screenshot of the chrome://version/ page.

BTW, I think your lost sessions are in that "1" file, judging from its size and date. We just need to find the right folder to drop it into.

I figured out a way to recover a lost database file after doing a System Refresh on Windows 8 (and having to reinstall chrome). File History was off and I thought all was lost. Luckily I found the old database in C:\Windows.old\Users\... the rest of the instructions are as Hans explains above.

Hope if anyone finds themselves in trouble, as I did, this will save the day and keep productivity up! And thanks Hans!

Hi Hans,

Thank you so much for creating Session Buddy!

Would you mind telling me how I can recover my lost sessions after re-installing Chrome on OS X?

The only thing in my "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0" folder is a file named "1". This document only contains information from the session I just saved a few minutes ago.

Does that mean that my SB data is completely lost?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, SB user data is currently only stored locally (as a numbered file in "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0"), so unless you have a backup you can restore from (I don't know to what extent backup/versioning is automated in OS X), that data is lost.

If I reset my chrome browser settings..is it possible to restore my previous information in SB? I think the answer is no..but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask..especially since I have really important sessions I lost. Unfortunately, I assumed Chrome was the issue with all the extra pop-ups each time I clicked a link when it was some sort of malware. T_T Thanks in advance!

@Jazome: if by "reset my chrome browser settings" you mean that you re-installed the browser, then you may have lost your Session Buddy sessions.

However, you may be able to recover your sessions from a shadow copy of the user data file if you're on Windows (I'm assuming you don't have a system backup to restore from. If you do, then recovery is trivial).

Let me know and we'll go from there.

Hans

Hans,

I uninstalled/re-installed Chrome to clear up a bug I was having with sync. But I forgot to backup SB and was so worried that I lost all of my sessions, but your helpful instructions did the trick. I was able to restore from just before I removed Chrome.

I love this extension & use it all the time, but I have just one question: Will SB backup to gdrive [or other cloud] in the future? It would be a dream come true to access my sessions from other computers/devices!

Anyway, thank you for all your hard work. It is much appreciated.

Yes, I'm working on cloud backup and sync. It's a huge project that's been ongoing for some time, but rest assured it is still actively being developed.

Glad you like the extension.

Find the path of your Chrome profile (most likely Default) as per these instructions:

http://sessionbuddy.com/datafileLocation.htm

In this profile folder, click through to the "databases" subfolder. Is there a folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0" in this "databases" folder?

Yes, I did look into these instructions. I don't see my previously saved sessions. Is there a way to recover these sessions?

Thank you,
Sandeep

OK, create a folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0" in the "databases" folder. Then right-click the created folder and click "Restore previous versions". See if there's any shadow copies there that Windows has backed up for you.

I'll try to help you out with this.

Check the local user data folder and let me know what files are in it.

See:

How to Locate Session Buddy Data on Your Computer

Also, which version of Windows are you running?

Hi there!

Firstly, thank you so so much for creating this extension, I use it all the time and it's a fantastic extension!

I recently updated Chrome and afterwards I couldn't open Session Buddy and I read through instructions I found and got it to work again but I'd lost all my data.
I tried following instructions posted above but I think I must be doing something wrong since my previous sessions still have not reappeared.
I shut down Google Chrome completely (checked the Task Tray and everything), found my user data profile for Chrome and clicked 'Restore previous versions' and then reopened Chrome to check whether my old sessions would appear, but there was nothing there.

Thank you in advance!

Ali

@Ali, the user data filename is specific to an SB installation, so when you move this file to a new installation, you (most of the time) have to rename it.

Hi, Hans! I've just met the same issue with my sessions in SB.. I had to reboot my windows and now all my saved data is gone. I am writing you because I've read all the comments from this conversation but I managed to find the database folder but unfortunately, I doesn't give me the option to "restore previous versions". Is there anything else I can do to fix this? Thank you so so much in advance!

Hey Hans, I'm absolutely in love with your extension. It's a beautiful way to manage and organize my work. I appreciate all the work you've done for the online community through this app. Thank you SO much!

I recently ran into a problem with my computer when I had too many things open, and it caused it to hang, resulting in me being forced to shut it down manually (after waiting SEVRAL minutes in hopes of it catching up). After restarting, my computer then alerted me to a possible disk corruption and it ran a corrupted disk/data scan, to fix any issues that may arise, due to the improper shut down. I was fine with it at the time and it seemed to work out. However, when I logged back in, my Chrome had been wiped clean of all settings and extensions. Unfortunately, I ran a disk and registry clean up using CCleaner before realizing that my Chrome had been crippled. After finding out, I looked for my previous sessions of SB through the methods described in this thread and I came up with nothing. I'm running on the Windows 7 Home Premium OS. Is there anything that can be done to restore my previous sessions before I start saving sessions again? I'm afraid saving again might overwrite access to whatever hidden shadows might exist. Thanks A LOT for the help.

@Tani Sorry for my very slow reply.

Unfortunately there is no other way I'm aware of to restore SB data in the event that SB is reinstalled or repaired (unless of course you have a system backup or a backup created from within SB).

One thing you could do is check to see if there is more than one file in the SB local user data folder. It's a long shot, but if there is more than one file then there may be a chance of recovering the data. Let me know if that's the case and we can go from there.

Hans

Yeah, I have re-installed and I did check for previous versions. Created that folder with the specified name and checked for previous versions through that. Nothing.
Any idea? You think after the disk scan/clean and CCleaner run, the previous saved sessions could've been wiped?

Did you check for previous versions before or after reinstalling SB, or both? If you haven't checked after reinstalling, do that.

There's a number of reasons why a previous version of a folder may not be available. I don't know anything about CCleaner so I can't say whether that was a factor.

Without a system backup or SB export/backup there really isn't any other hope of recovery. One last thing to check is to make sure you only have one file in the SB user data folder. If there is more than one file then one of them might be the original data. Let me know.

I think so far I've only checked it after re-installing. Can't really check pre-re-install anymore though, can I? heh... So far, post-re-install there's no previous versions available. Currently I have three things in my databases folder:

    - chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0    (folder, post install)
        - Contains an item named "10" of "File" type. I have yet to use SB to save/restore after re-install.
    - Databases  (data base file)
    - Databases.db-journal  (DB-journal file)

Again, thanks for all your help!

Hi Hans,

I found this thread post as I was searching for how to recover a lost "Session Manager" web app of Chrome's that disappeared when Chrome reset. I know this is all related to "Session Buddy," and I tried following your recommendations, but got to the last step to "restore previous session" and don't see that as an option for any of the folders (using Windows 8 and have Chrome version 43). There is literally nothing online that has any solutions to this, just many people like myself that are flabbergasted. Do you have any knowledge on Session Manager restoration issues?

Thanks, that did it, couldn't import the exported backup (just a message saying 'that doesn't look right')

So yes, happy!

I'll need to look into alternate backup modes though since the normal import/export isn't reliable.

Hey Hans!

Thanks again for all your work on Session Buddy. Yesterday it seems like I contracted an adware virus while downloading a video program. Normally I'm very careful when I download but this one managed to slip by me. Session Buddy was working fine up until that point. After I got this adware problem, my homepage and start page on Chrome were changed to some random shopping.com or something and i couldn't change it through the Chrome settings. At this point, I found a fix and uninstalled the certain programs that would've been causing it but it still didn't fix it. In an attempt to protect my stuff, I signed out of Chrome before anything was affected. After going through Chromes extensions, properties and folders I was able to follow a fix online and stop the adware from doing its thing. At this point, I logged back into Chrome and my Session Buddy was unable to find it's sessions. I didn't delete or touch any SB related files/folders, the only thing that directly affected my extensions was signing out of my account. As such, I wanted to ask if signing out of Chrome cause a loss of all SB related local and account stored sessions and settings?

No, it definitely should not.

To see if your SB user data is intact, navigate to the user data folder (see http://sessionbuddy.com/datafileLocation.htm).

If there are any files in that folder, copy them for safe keeping, reinstall SB, and follow the "Advanced Restore" section of the following doc:

Thanks for the response. I did as you instructed, backed up the file in the user data folder, uninstalled chrome because i was still having a few redirect issues with the adware, re-installed chrome and signed in to restore my extensions, and replaced the file through the advanced restore method. It didn't work, still gave me an empty session history. Which must mean the history was wiped beforehand, at some point during the clean. Not sure what caused it. Second time I've lost everything... Maybe it has to do with the extension being stored on my account vs the data being stored locally. I uninstalled and deleted the chrome folder so I don't think there's any work around this time. Again, thanks for your time.

Hi, nice to meet you. I had a problem with my computer so I must set up a new disk (a new local disk F)  and reinstall my system (window 7). Of course, I lost all of my session buddy data and left them in another disk. Luckily, I found a good way to restore my lost data. I copy all of information in the item, named "10", in the folder chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0 (...of previous system) and paste into the item, named "1", in the folder chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0 (...of new system).

It works ^.^. I can restore all of my previous data. But, sure, I need to close all of the current chrome tab everywhere.

Thanks a lot for this good extension. I hope best wishes to your work. ^.^

I am on an iMac, and session buddy deleted all my sessions. I had about 30. I have located /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/databases/chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0, but on OS X there is no "restore previous versions" when I right-clock on the folder. @Lindsay The only option for recovery on OS X is via a system backup if you have one. Let me know and I'll walk you through restoring Session Buddy data.

Also note that you can manually back up Session Buddy data through the app:

Hello Hans,

I'm in deep trouble, I was in transition to a new laptop and because of chrome saving everything I wasn't so keen to double check on anything, when I logged in my new laptop to check my session, to my sadness I figured out that there was no kind of cloud saving and I lost all my saved session which means I lost a lot mf months work :(

Unfortunaltey for security reasons I logged of my account on the old laptop as well in chrome and when I tried to login again and look for the for folder of backup, I couldn't find it there and also I couldn't see my old saved sessions on the old laptop as well!!

Is there anyway to recover those sessions??
Many thanks anyway for this great tool, I hope you can help me on this..

(I have scrutinized the external URL on how to restore,,, but it will be good if u can list out the steps one by one. the manual is quite difficult to understand as its too technical as if its meant for ppl with computer savvy only. Here I provide u the screenshot: http://i933.photobucket.com/albums/ad172/AnyPicsDontMind/screenshot_zpsgjnqzmbv.png
I would be super obliged if u can get back to me in a jiffy, sir :D thousand thanks!

Good afternoon,

Do you think I can recover all my lost buddy sessions acoording with file attached?

I think that all of them are inside of it but when I try to recover them throughout " Import " Section in Buddy Session it displays a dialog window what says " That doesn´t look right"

May you help me with this issue?

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

Send me a screenshot of the dialog that appears and we'll go from there.

Also, am I correct in assuming that currently SB is working fine but you're missing session data?

Thank you!

Try to navigate to the data folder directly rather than searching, since that folder might be hidden. I don't know what File Explorer looks like in Windows 8, but there's got to be a way to do that. Google it.

When you find the data folder, there may be a shadow copy of it for you to restore. You can check this with the following procedure in Windows 7 (I don't know how much of this also applies to Windows 8. Google it.):

- Shut down Chrome.
- Navigate back up to "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases"
- Right-click on the folder named "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0"
- Click "Restore previous versions"
- This will hopefully show you a list of folders to restore.

Just to inform all and mainly you Hansifer,

This procedure and solution does totally WORK!!!

I´ve followed all steps, carefully, and then after Google restart and once I opened my Buddy application again...surprise!! All old sessions were there recovered!!

Many many thanks for your support though I took almost two days to find the solution.

I see that this is a quite dated thread, but am wondering if you could still get back to be Hansifer.

I got a nasty trojan virus on my computer and was forced to reinstall windows and delete everything on my drive including Windows on it, along with my AppData. I saved the AppData among all of my other folders by archiving them into .rar files onto an external hard drive. I imported them but clearly, that's not enough. I had multiple sessions recorded with multiple windows each and around 50-100 tabs each. I didn't know about the import and export feature or the backup feature before this happened and I'll be sure to use it if I can get my data back. If you could get back to me on the first steps I need to take, that'd be splendid.

Thanks in advance. Also cheers to your wonderful program.

Yea sorry about that.

Unfortunately, the economic reality of providing a free product makes it impossible to garner the resources necessary to directly address the volume of user correspondence generated by a user base of 900,000+

I'd like to change that, but monetization is a long and tricky path for a browser extension.

Thanks for understanding.

Please someone help me. i really need help on How to RESTORE MULTIPLE SESSIONS with TABS in more than one window after laptop restarting*******

I had several windows wth 80+ tabs opened in Chrome from previous browsing sessions months ago.and after restarting the computer the "restore" button showed up but didn’t work. All Ctrl-Shit-T does is restore the most recently closed tabs in order–and it only stores tabs you closed in browsing, not tabs closed as part of a reboot.

I guess I can go into History and see if I can find the tabs out of thousands and thousands of pages over many months, I guess, but I would really appreciate being able to restore the actual lost session.

How can I restore previous chrome sessions? I realllly need this help even i need to pay for that. please someone help me.

my email adddress is Rayan.a...@gmail.com

I am using Windows 8.Please help, I really need them back for my research paper, otherwise I will loose a lot of work. Many thanks!

Try and get a recover program like stellar data recovery and see if you can get all your missing files or if you have a system restore point. Beyond that. I lost my files too and the moron who created it was of no help at all and this has happened to many people which is why I don't use it anymore.

Hi, I just wanted to pop in and say that this age-old recovery method still works today. I had to reformat my system and forgot to backup my Session Buddy, and feared that I would've lost all of the data forever.
I'm glad that I could find the database in the Windows.old folder to manually restore. Thank you, Hans!
