. I have this same issue (on win7 64 bit).... slightly different
scenario. My initializing problem started after a system restore
(point), ..otherwise, same issue.
I don't see "background.html" ... is that only on vista ? As
mentioned, I am using windows 7. Am i blind ? is it named something
different in W7 than it is in vista ? am i looking in the wrong
place ? can you help/explain *exactly* what to do, please ? :) ty

Make sure you check the "Developer mode" checkbox at the top of the extensions page.

I should mention, I've seen problems with Windows's System Restore where Chrome extension code files get deleted.

Are there any .js files in "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko\3.0.9_0\js" ?

Nailed it.

I discovered that System Restore on Vista ridiculously deletes/reverts
all new/revised files with an executable extension... everywhere, even
the shadow copies. My 3.0.9 directories were created on April 22,
which explains why they're bereft of js files, and the video problems
which precipitated the so-called "System Restore" plagues me still: an
otherwise unrelated consequence being that Vista flips itself off in
various scenarios, such as visiting Google's web store. Although
created ‎back in February, a SQLite database named 7 in \AppData\Local
\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases\chrome-
extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0 appears intact with a
suitably time-stamped last session from April 22, (later that
evening). As it would seem, in fact, the upgrade proceeded flawlessly,
if you wouldn't mind providing the missing js files without a doomed
visit to the web store, I'm hoping that will do the trick. Many thanks
either way -- James

Thanks! It looks like it's going to work, but there are also some
files and directories missing under /ui, so along with some subsequent
exceptions the console is showing "Failed to load resource" for chrome-
extension://edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko/ui/llIlllI/llIlllI.js

I am now having this same problem on Win7 64-bit Home Premium. I had to use System Restore after a bad driver install; now Session Buddy just initializes forever without starting.

Reading through the thread on this problem I can find & do some similar things, but am hesitant to, as It is a little unclear.

First off, the version number is different from the instructions given below, but similarly, the following path does NOT contain any .JS files, only "license.txt":

C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko\3.0.16_0\js\Il\log4javascript

There are no files in the "js" or "ll" folders, either.

Should I backup a database? If so, where is it located?

Should I copy the files included in the "js.zip" file into the "js" folder?

Is it possible to back up the database, so as to not lose my previous sessions, uninstall & reinstall Session Buddy, and then copy the database back into the fresh install?

Help....

Thanks,
John

Hi John, the recommended approach is as follows:

1) Shut down Chrome

2) Copy the following SB data folder to a safe location (eg, to your "My Documents" folder):

C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\databases\chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

3) Start Chrome

4) Reinstall Session Buddy

5) Shut down Chrome

6) Go to the SB data folder noted above and take note of the name of the data file in it (it will be an integer). Delete this file.

7) Copy the contents of the backed-up data folder into the SB data folder

8) Rename the copied file(s) according to the filename noted in step 6. There should only be one file, but there may be two.

9) Start Chrome

Let me know how that goes.

Cheers,
Hans

Thank you, I will make a note of your suggestions, but it appears unnecesarry at this time: I saw your reply in am email from the group, but did not read it earlier today just before I took a nap. I woke up to a new Google Chrome EULA page onscreen when I awoke. I don't know why, Chrome wasn't on before I napped. Only Mozilla. It has happened before, too(?)

Anyhow, when I signed into the browser, it synced everything and SessionBuddy now seems back to the way it had been prior to the System Restore debacle.

I do want to back up my SB database, however, as regular practice. It appears that you have given me directions for doing just that (minus the Reinstall part). Thanks!

Perhaps building this backup ability into the extension?...Just a thought.

Thanks again!

Please Help!! Last night after a System Restore my Session Buddy was stuck on Reinitializing -- So thinking the obvious and quickest fix would be to uninstall and reinstall it, I proceeded to do that first, but seem to have lost all my data!!!  But then I found this post and thinking another System Restore might bring all my old data back, I am in the midst of doing what you say below.  But I'm noticing that the main.html file is only 33kb (!!??!) and I don't see any file with an integer!  Please help me! Do you know where my data is and if it will come back?  The folder I have found is 3.2.1_0 under C:\Users\Computer 2-1\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko\3.2.1_0

Please please help and inform me how I can get close to 3 years data back.

Is this data gone or not?  Can I use Recuva or some other Undelete Software to recover the single file that is most significant here, whichever the name might be and how large should this file reasonably be considering its 3 years of stuff?  Thanks.

You're looking at the wrong folder. The SB data folder is at the path outlined here:

Check if Windows has a previous version of that folder by right-clicking it and selecting "Restore previous versions" from the context menu. A dialog should come up showing any previous versions available for restore. If so, let me know and I'll provide additional instructions.

FYI, Windows System Restore has a tendency to hose Chrome extensions by deleting their .js files in some cases, so that's likely what happened in your case.

Hans

Yes!! I had just came back to tell you that I had found the issue and that therein is what it was!!! I was looking in the Extensions folder with the same name edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0  Duh!!!  I resolved the problem once I realized wait there is another folder under databases and that may have happened by reading something about databases on here no clue how I stumbled across there and no clue why I didn't go there to begin with...LOL  I think for some reason cutting and pasting wasn't getting me to the required folder last night and I manually did it and went into the wrong folder.

Everything is good now.  I restored the old file from last night and renamed it to what the new(er) file that came installed with the app.  Everything works beautifully like before now.

Thanks again for an absolutely BRILLIANT extension.  Wish this was available for Android Chrome too ;)    Its great that I found this way of restoring individual folders too as while I knew of System Restore on the whole computer I wasn't necessarily aware that I could restore individual folders by right-clicking on them.

Sorry, I meant I restored the old file from last night and renamed it to what the new(er) file that came with after the RE-INSTALLATION of the app.

Hi Hans,

Great knowledge you have on this - I seem to be having the same problem with my Chromebook, so some of the steps to resolve may not apply...

I have:
- saw that my Chromebook was slowing down
- clicked 'reboot to update'
- tried to upload session buddy
- it seems to be continually initializing
- help! :)

Any advice would be useful and appreciated, many thanks.

Best
Geoff

Try to completely uninstall and reinstall Session Buddy, but be sure to back up your local data file first so you can migrate it after reinstalling:

Hi Hans

Many thanks - however please note that I have a Chromebook, which does not have a directory structure apart from Google Drive (all cloud based).

I cannot therefore find the file(s) to be backed up before uninstalling/reinstalling :(

There is a way to access the file system on ChromeOS, but you'll have to do some googling to find out how since that's out of my scope of knowledge... perhaps someone on this board can help out?
