The niceest feature of the plugin has been deprecated in v4.x?

And the docs no longer match the interface either!

So sad.

Is reinstating multi-format import/export on the horizon for the v4.x road map?

Exactly, what happened to being able to export in multiple formats? HTML, CSV, etc.

Not sure what you consider the “nicest feature” exactly, but you can use copy paste with all of the previously supported formats. Go to Settings > Other to enable them.

Use copy paste instead.

Hi Hans,

Can you please add back the export function for HTML, CSV, etc.?

I have a need to export tab groups from multiple sessions. You used to be able to do this with 1-click.

Not sure why such a useful feature was removed?

Thank you,
John

You can now copy/paste instead of using export, which is arguably a quicker, more user-friendly, and standard way to get data out of an app.

All formats are still available. Go to Settings > Other > Extra copy formats to enable the ones you use on a regular basis.

Hi Hans,

How do you figure this is quicker? Now I have to copy all the tabs I want to HTML, create an HTML file, paste them into the HTML file, save it. Then utilize the file for my use.

This used to be a 1-click process that took 1 second. Now it takes 3-5 minutes at least.

Why would it be an issue to restore this previous functionality?

Thank you,
John

Quicker to get data out of the app, and once it's in the clipboard you have more options for what to do with it. Not all use cases involve saving to a file.

That said, you're right that workflows that do require saving SB data in a particular format to a file are now a bit slower (although not by as much as you claim).

A number of factors were taken into consideration for how copy/paste and export features were split up. Some of them are covered in this post: https://groups.google.com/g/sessionbuddy-discuss/c/UV4O8OODhyw/m/ArVaHEB4AQAJ

There was also a bit of confusion over the fact that not all export formats were import-compatible. HTML is a prime example.

I'm curious, what's your ultimate purpose for regularly saving collections to an html file?

Hi Hans,

I do a lot of research and writing. I usually have 4 browser windows open with 50 tabs in each. I save the tabs to sessions. I then export the tabs to HTML from SB and import them into Raindrop.io. From there, I run automations on them based on my research. The inability to export directly to HTML is a huge pain point now. Literally, something that used to take seconds, not takes much longer, and quite frankly is just a major hassle.

If possible, I'd love it if you can add direct export to HTML from SB sessions again. The one click was huge.

Thank you,
John

Thanks for the additional information John.

Would any of the following make your workflow simpler than if SB supported export to HTML?:

- support for paste in Raindrop.io
- integration between Raindrop.io and Session Buddy
- support for your automations in Session Buddy

Hi Hans,

Absolutely, thank you for asking. If I had to rank them, I would say:

1) Support for automations in Session Buddy (if there was an API as I use Make.com for automations)
2) Integration with Raindrop.io would be huge through an automation platform (like Make.com) but if that is not possible, direct integration to Raindrop.io would be amazing since sessions could be exported directly to Raindrop.io by session possibly equating a session name with a folder to be created with the same name on export to Raindrop.io with all tabs there)

That would be my preference. As to paste option, that doesn't really work as well for me because I deal with a lot of tabs, between a lot of browser windows, and cutting and pasting would slow down the workflow for my use case and situation.

My workflow is to do research in each Chrome window for each section of a paper I am writing, typically having 4 or more windows open, some with 50+ tabs open. Save them to session in SB. Export to Raindrop.io and from there, I process them with Make.com and run automations on them. Some I send to Readwise Reader (https://read.readwise.io/) through the Readwise API (readwise.io/) and then send my highlights to Notion (https://www.notion.so/), Obsidian (https://obsidian.md/), or Evernote (https://evernote.com/) depending on what my use case is for writing as I use those 3 applications for writing different things. All of them integrate with Readwise API.

I hope that clarifies. Thanks for being open to improvements of SB. I have been a user for many years and was sad to see the export function get the ax!

I look forward to the future improvements with SB.

Cheers,
John

Like John, it can sometimes be important to be able to import/export a list of URLs that might come in plain format (one per line). Has this feature been restored? This was actually my main and only use case for the plugin!

The Copy feature does this.

Support for paste of plaintext URLs still needs to be implemented.

Thanks for the additional detail, John. That's super helpful. We'll give this some thought.

Copy/paste doesn't seem to work anymore; it won't accept a list of line-break-separated URLs. It'll only accept URLs copy/pasted within the plugin itself……?

Support for plaintext paste will be added in a forthcoming release.

Plaintext import/add will come in v4.0.5 in about a week.

This release will include support for the following (auto-detected) import formats:

image.png

The release also includes:
  • Ability to add links to a collection or tabs to the session in any of the above formats
  • Ability to export in a subset of formats listed above (broader support coming in subsequent releases)
  • Fix for window restore failures that can occur with some multi-monitor setups
  • Auto-repair for data corruption that can be caused by disk cleaner tools and other external factors
  • Better auto-recovery of database failures caused by certain Chrome bugs
  • Additional fine-grained tweaks and fixes

Eventually support for these formats will be added to native paste as well.

Hello Hans,

When is v4.0.5 being released? Import and Export have been broken for me on macOS on Brave Web Browser for a while now. I currently have no way of importing urls in any format. The Import/Export function fails with every format.

Hey Brian,

v4.0.5 will be out before the end of the month.

Thanks for your patience, and lemme know how the new import/export features work out for you when they land.

Cheers,
Hans
