1st, let me compliment you on a  great effort. I use your extension daily for a wide range of purposes too long to list in this post.

My work/life environment leverages 4 internet enabled devices:
Dell Laptop
Nexus 4
iPhone
Samsung Galaxy Tab

90% of my day is spent connected to the "cloud" for all the things I do
One of the many Session Manger uses is to save a selection of tabs collected during a research session online that I want to come back to for future review and analysis.
However, review sessions often happens during breaks or "slack" time and depending on my location  and device I'd like to access the Chrome Session Manager ext. and saved session from any one of those devices. Put another way, I'd like to open the same saved sessions, regardless which device generated them or which I'm using to access them.

As the data is stored locally and not in the cloud, this is a challenge.
Can you recommend a solution?
Perhaps sharing the data folder in Dropbox or some other method of sharing a local folder in the cloud?

Cheers,
Lars

Perhaps the best solution is an option to point Session Buddy's datastore to a folder on Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. or providing a sync service. Is this possible or on the future drawing board?

Sync is currently in development, but there will be limitations for mobile devices since extensions are not (yet) supported in any of the mobile browsers. This means you'll be able to read and edit (current and saved) sessions across all devices, but you won't be able to save or expose a current session on a mobile device.

Dropbox/Google Drive sync is currently not viable for a variety of technical reasons.

I'm crawling across this desert of non-syncness, desperate for just a sip of sync before I die… You speak of an oasis just ahead…  the buzzards are wheeling in the sky, I feel my life ebbing as I languish in the wilderness of non-sync…

Hang in there. I promise I'm focused on it but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Still no updates on this?
Downloaded Session Buddy, it's working perfectly fine. Only thing missing (for my needs) is the sync functionality.

Awesome job though by the way : )

It's still very much under development and will be completed, but it's a huge undertaking, I don't want to push it out until it's fully baked, and my resources are currently somewhat limited so the pace is not as fast as I'd like it to be.

I appreciate your interest and patience.

Hey,

just wanted to weigh in and say that I am also eagerly waiting for a sync/backup ability of session buddy.

Why don't you develop the code in the open? Others could help and speed up the process, or give valuable input on fuctionality etc. Sync is quite hard to get right, especially when you're doing it in a silo.

On a related note, what about Dropbox/GDrive sync in the meantime? Could you post a how-to as to how that could be achieved? You mentioned above it wasn't technically feasable, but I find that kind of hard to believe. Shouldn't all the critical session-buddy data reside in basically a single sqlite file?

Thanks.

Cheers, F

"Sync is quite hard to get right"

Very true. However, I'm not interested in making SB an open-source project at this point for a number of reasons I've written about before and would rather not repeat. Suffice it to say both open and closed software development have benefits and liabilities that are well-established and I have spent considerable time weighing them against the requirements of this particular project.

The problems with Dropbox/GDrive sync hacks are manifold. The location of SB's local storage file is fixed and it's not a folder you want to point your sync location to because it's controlled by Chrome. The data file's name is also controlled by Chrome and is not consistent across machines. Even if you could hook it up, you would encounter frequent file locking issues and end up with more conflict files than actual syncs as well as potential data loss when syncs do complete because it's wholesale. In short, it's a terrible idea that sounds perfectly reasonable at a high level.

I also landed here looking for this feature.

FYI, if you are logged in to Chrome, you can access active sessions on other devices through the History tool in Chrome.

I was wondering if this is the sync feature is still under development?
If so would you consider crowdfunding as a way to dedicate resources for such a problem?
I'm hopeful that half a million people using this valuable extension can easily gather the resources for such a long-needed feature.

It's under development, but I can't give you a target date just yet.

Hi Hans,
I appreciate your consistent responsiveness.  But gee golly, it has been three full years of workin on it.  Appreciating that there will be cross platform complexities, is there a way to access and restore tab sets across at least multiple Windows machines?  Or to mail/send the session somehow?  I could have sworn I have seen other devices displayed in Session Buddy, but I can't reproduce that on any of my devices today.  Thanks.

Hi Hans,

Just sent an email before I saw this thread in this discussion. Is there any update on this? I'm sure it's rather tedious answering the same thing for so long. But that's what happens when you create something wonderful that so many want to use. :-)

Would love to hear the status.

Thank you!
Steven

I appreciate the interest but I still can't give a definite ETA on sync yet. All I can say is that we're continuing to make progress on it.

@Smittysaurus I'm not sure if this suits your needs in the interim but it's possible to export/import sessions to/from a file. See:

I love Session Buddy, but I can't use it without sync. I have begun using FreshStart Session Manager. It allows syncing, and it has worked great so far. It says "Sessions are saved in the "FreshStart Sessions" folder in bookmarks, allowing you to synchronize it with other computers." I would gladly switch back to Session Buddy if/when syncing is available. Could you implement syncing the same way?

Unfortunately that's not a viable approach for Session Buddy, whose data and features require a more robust and reliable storage and sync mechanism than what browser bookmarks have to offer.

Dear Hans,
It is now 5 years working on SYNC!? Are you guys serious? Why not just say YOU WILL NOT IMPLEMENT IT!
Please give us closure!

so, 4 years later and still not even the possibility to change the storage folder to gdrive/dropbox etc?
What about automated import/export?

Have been using SB for as loong as I can remember, it's great.

I figured a workaround by exporting the session to a txt file and saving it in dropbox and then importing it in another device.  Not ideal but better than nothing.

Since we see no real feedback from the authors and no will to offer a real cross-platform cloud based session storage and back up, I will “improperly” mention an extension I found and use (used) named “TabsFolder” that does what I really want, crOss-platform cloud-based sessions manager, BUT it is damn expensive at $100/year! So, I have been and am now still using “Session Buddy” for Chrome, and as you suggested, I export the saved sessions to cloud and import them on Chrome in my other devices (Mac/PC). Session Buddy has really saved my day quite a few times.

Can anyone please tell me where on a Mac are the Session Buddy files stored? I want to use symbolic links to relocate the folder to my cloud.

I'd also love this feature. I'd be happy to contribute donations or time for this. It can't be overly hard, chrome extensions support cloud storage of user data: https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/storage

I'm a developer, I'd love to help, please let me know. Also I saw the OSS post but please OS this

Also want to point out that the two most popular posts (by an order of magnitude) in this group would be solved by cloud storage
