Session Buddy no longer automatically saves sessions as frequently

Session Buddy used to save sessions for about an hour ago, one day, one week and two weeks. Now, all I have are sessions saved 15 days ago that are missing many of the tabs that I now have open. I now have to manually save it in order to make sure I am safe in the event of a browser or OS crash, or I accidentally close a window.

Any indication of what the problem is?

Thanks in advance.

I would also like to know - My Session Buddy also saves around once in three days (I guess it's chrome restart), but was saving every hour - which is what I want. If I accidentally close whole widow, there is no way to restore it from chrome, so I use Session buddy, but now I have the last backup from days ago :(

I just lost all my tabs and when I went to restore them with Session Buddy, the last time it saved was 1 month ago. There's nothing in the settings about how often session buddy tries to save so what's going on here? This extension is useless if it's not saving frequently.

Bump! I'm having this issue as well. I have three windows of tabs open for a few days. I closed one and later I realized I'd like it back. Session Buddy hadn't saved any new tab collections for over 10 days.
Definitely recommend adding a save frequency option in settings.

Thank you!

Use save function to be sure.
If lost something try this manual.

Just chiming in. The automatic snapshotting of my (often fairly complex & long running) sessions was a major feature for me. Does anyone know if this functionality is coming back? Is this a bug, was the feature intentionally deprecated?

This thread was started in November, that's 3 months … any information would be encouraging at this point. I suppose I'd better start looking for an alternative.

Currently Session Buddy saves a session automatically (under "Previous Sessions") whenever the browser is closed, either by the user or due to a crash. This behavior has not changed since Session Buddy was created.

There is ongoing development to improve restore coverage by auto-saving at finer-grained points, like when a tab or window is closed.

Thanks very much for the clarification! I never would have guessed that I used to close chrome frequently enough to consistently have had sessions saved every day (which I pretty clearly remember being the case). That said, I've learned it is usually wise to assume my recollection is faulty whenever new information contradicts it.

Currently, my usage pattern (Chrome as my primary browser) means that Session Buddy is pretty useless as crash protection if it only saves a backup session when I close all Chrome windows. Mark me down as waiting anxiously for that particular feature enhancement!

Thanks again for following up, it is much appreciated.

I totally agree with Justin and waiting to hear back. I too had long open sessions with Chrome, seldomly closing it and I recall the very useful feature of frequent snapshots. For the past months - I did not keep a record as I thought it was a momentary bug but now lost sessions too many times and thus writing to you - I have sessions from days ago only.

Please see into this. Something is definitely not like before whether you accidentally made or not! Otherwise, it is a fab product I have been using for years!

Thank you

Damn it. Five days of saved tabs lost. I don't close chrome on purpose, so I need an auto save option ASAP. It can't be THAT hard to implement.

Would LOVE this feature to be pushed to front of roadmap please.  :)

I just lost an accidentally closed window, and I went to session buddy and it last session save was a week ago.

If there was a way to have auto-save where we can set how frequently we want it saved, like once a day, or even once per hour - it's not even that I need Session Buddy to save those auto-saves forever, it's just incase of what happened today - I accidentally closed a window myself that had many tabs of research on it.

I just want to be able to re-open a recently closed window that was incognito.

I love how you record incognito windows, in this case, Id like them to be included in a auto-save feature for accidentally closed windows.  :)

Thank you!

Love what you do!

p.s. what happened to your patreon?

Dana,

I would like those features as well.

Right now I use another Chrome extension for doing just that... Revovering crashed sessions.

There are several of those. Just do a search.

This is nonsense. Session Buddy does NOT save a session automatically (under "Previous Sessions"). I previously lost everything because Session Buddy failed to save Previous Sessions. To prevent this happening again, I saved 3 separate windows of tabs. I named them so I could easily find them. Session Buddy again failed to save them. Why are the creators in denial when everyone has had similar experiences?

Hi!

But my browser didn't crash - I accidentally closed one of my windows with a bunch of tabs open that had research in it.

I wanted to go to session buddy and see an auto-save of most recent windows so I could reopen that accidentally closed window

Thank you!

Warmly,
Dana

But if you close a window, does it hold onto the closed window info if you open session buddy AFTER you closed the window on accident?

It didnt with mine…

It doesn't, unless Session Buddy saved it because you had it open for several hours or a day (no clarity on how often Session Buddy saves so it's hard to know how long). Next time, if you accidentally close windows in Chrome just press Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen the tab(s) you just closed. Chrome recently implemented a function to have this even if you close the browser altogether, but before once you close the browser all of those tabs are gone forever.

Session Buddy: Please give us a setting to adjust the frequency of saved sessions. It should use disk space on local machines, so shouldn't take up too much data space...

P.S. I donated a while back because I was in love with you software.

Just chiming in here to say that auto save session regularly is very much needed.
Its not useless without it, but there has been numerous times where i have lost tabs because of crash etc. I dont normally close Chrome and can have it running for weeks at a time. And im a heavy tab user.. :)

Cheers

Agreed. Should be a setting to set a time frequency. I lost a lot of work just now, but was all 'no worries, session buddy's got my back.' But now I'm all 'session buddy is a traitor.' LoL

What's the timeline for implementing an autosave function, like every hour, or something like that?  This is a greatly needed feature, especially for Chromebooks.  Chrome doesn't close, therefore the way you currently have the extension functioning, doesn't give us much protection.  Session Saver in Firefox, years ago, was perfect.  Saved sessions automatically so no matter what happened, including a cat rubbing her head on the corner of the computer and hitting the damn X button, wouldn't lose all my tabs.

It's great to have a manual way to create a tab set or backup... But the automated save is what we really need.  Please push this to the top of the list.  I'd gladly donate if this becomes part of the standard extension.

Thank you.

I just had this same experience - and Session Buddy last saved my tabs NINE DAYS AGO. I lost all of my tabs, which has got to be one of the most irritating experiences in the world - but to be relying on something like Session Buddy to save you when these things happen, and to have it fail so hard, is truly a new level of rage.

There is just no way that Session Buddy has always only saved sessions on closing Chrome. I have never, ever been the type of person to restart Chrome or my computer - I only do these things when updates prompt me to. And I definitely didn't do either of those things nine days ago.

Is it possible that something broke at some point when Chrome updated? I love this extension, and really don't want to switch - but it's no longer serving the purpose if it's not saving my tabs at a logical interval.

Session Buddy is no longer periodically saves my tabs! Which makes it useless now :(

Exact same problem.
Auto-save was a thing.
Now it isn't.
Someone is in denial.
And I've lost all my tabs.

Please add me to the list of requesting a true auto-save feature and allowing the user to configure the time.

The extension seemed perfect for me because I have a lot of incognito tabs open and it's horrible having to deal with PC restarts or crashes. However, Session Buddy is pointless if it doesn't allow auto-save. Like many others, my Chrome window NEVER closes. The other horrible part is that even if I save a session, I can't overwrite the same session on the next save! This will create a new "saved session" and forces me to manually manage the sessions, which I don't want to do. I just want Session Buddy to periodically save all my tabs across all Chrome windows be it every 5 minutes, 10 minutes, an hour or whatever and be able to easily restore them whenever I want to.

The ability to choose an auto-save duration would be excellent, as would the ability to automatically save a periodic backup to disk.

My wife would have been happy if either of these had existed a week ago (especially the latter), as she lost her Windows profile, and quite a bit of info she had saved up.

I just found this after I posted a new topic.

Session buddy totally used to auto-save very often!! I remember it perfectly. When did this stop? I just lost lots of tabs because my chrome crashed and it did not save the session, as it's been stated by support here!

I was able to resolve the Previous Sessions problem by using this older fix from Hans:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!starred/sessionbuddy-discuss/mMZ3_UgHDAs

In my case, the previous sessions completely stopped auto-saving (Saved Sessions remained unaffected), so I first tried unchecking/saving then rechecking/saving the 1st setting under the General tab, "Automatically record sessions…", to try to refresh the process, but this didn't work. I also tried deleting all the Previous Sessions, but still no more would auto-save in the list. After deleting the 2 local storage files in the link above and relaunching Chrome, the sessions started auto-saving again as they did before and I haven't had any issues since. This is most likely caused by file corruption.

I'd recommend trying this for any issues with Previous Sessions, but be sure to manually save ones that you need beforehand and keep a backup of the old local storage files. I'm not sure if that's where they're stored though.

Hi,

I have tried this but it's still not working. I don't have the files mentioned in that thread (<profile path>\Local Storage\chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0.localstorage). I only have one folder inside Local Storage. The only relevant folders I found were:
<profile path>/google-chrome/Default/databases/chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0/
<profile path>/google-chrome/Default/Extensions/edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko/3.6.3_0/
and inside those folders there wasn't any .localstorage file.

I tried deleting some stuff around but it did not make a difference.

Thanks for the message, though. Were you able to follow the steps as explained in that thread?

For anyone else not able to find the local storage files, see my response here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!starred/sessionbuddy-discuss/mMZ3_UgHDAs

Additionally, I would first try doing a file search for "chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0.localstorage" but make sure that system files are included in the mac search.  If using command+F, you have to manually select this option from the drop-down menus.  If nothing shows up it's likely that the current session data is now being saved to different files.
