Session Buddy: Migrate, Transfer, Sync, Export-Import & Merge?

- I love SB have used SB it on several machines
- Each of them have Saved and Auto-saved / Previous sessions
- Could I export/ backup them all and MERGE into a single machine?
- Is there cloud based sync of Sessions in the future? using DropBox or Google or another way?

You can use export/import to merge session data.

Any timeframe on sync?

I know, I know. I sound like a broken record.

For years.

;-)

LOL

Keep up the good work.

I can't comment on time frame, but I can tell you it remains under active development as a top priority.

So I have 3/4 machines each with their own:

"Previous Sessions" and
"Saved Sessions"

Will Export Import "Combine" All the Sessions from each machine?

My intent is to BACKUP from my PRIMARY machine and RESToRE it to PRIMARY NEW.

THEN - For all Secondary machines - Export  Import  MERGE into PRIMARY NEW

Will I get all Sessions from every machine with proper session names and timestamps without issue? Any possible DB conflicts?

Yes, as long as you select "Backup file" from the Export submenu to generate the export

Each session of each installation is considered unique. When you export a session from one installation into another, you're essentially making a copy of that session and adding it to another installation.

So the BACKUP  and IMPoRT .. APPENDS or ADDS to the EXISTING INSTAll?

It does not Replace?

These are Machines:

old Primary [op]: PS + SS >  Export Backup [op]

new Primary [np]: Empty PS + SS < Import [op] = ?? Does this action Replace or Merge/ Add [op] sessions entirely?

once i get my new primary [np] i'd like to move to secondary machines

Secondary Machines:
secondary 1 [s1]: PS + SS
secondary 2 [s2]: PS + SS
secondary 3 [s3]: PS + SS

From these Secondary machines, I want to ADD/ MERGE everything into [np].
So for them, do I do?
Export All or Export Backup

once done, eventually i'll format and delete everything except [np].

Can someone advise on best export settings if I just want to be able to import using SB on another machine? Sorry if I'm being thick.

@David H In the export dialog, make sure to select the "JSON" tab and make sure the "Sessions" and "Windows" checkboxes are both checked.

@David H If you want to port all sessions, simply use Export > Backup file.

This generates a file that you can import directly into another SB installation.

While awaiting the cloudbased service i use this workaround for Google Drive to sync the databases:

1. Open an Administrator Command Prompt

1a. Open Start Menu -> Accessories

1b. Right-click on Command Prompt

1c. Select "Run as administrator"

2. Change directory to the Google Drive directory where you want the link

2a. Open your Google Drive folder in Windows Explorer

2b. Copy the Google Drive folder name from the location bar

2c. Type "cd " without the quotes into the Administrator Command Prompt

2d. Paste the Google Drive folder name into the Administrator Command Prompt

2e. Press Enter

3. Create a soft link to the directory you want to back up

3a. Type

mklink /d [name of soft link] [target of soft link]

replacing [name of soft link] with a name of your choice, such as "Foo.link" and [target of soft link] with the name of the directory you want to back up, such as "E:\Files\Foo"

3b. Press Enter

If the command succeeds, it will print

symbolic link created for Foo.link <<===>> E:\Files\Foo

4. Create a hard link to the soft link

4a. Type

mklink /j [name of hard link] [name of soft link]

replacing [name of hard link] with a name of your choice, such as "Foo", and [name of soft link] with the name you chose in step 3a., such as "Foo.link"

4b. Press Enter

If the command succeeds, it will print

Junction created for Foo <<===>> Foo.link

Google Drive should now begin syncing the contents of the disk folder E:\Files\Foo to the Google Drive folder Foo.

And since the databases are SQLite, you can also use http://sqlitebrowser.org to manipulate them..

cheers

jurgen.

Hans...any update on the sync?  Your post was from 3 years ago.

I really love SB, but I work on two machines...about a week at a time each...I want to be able to easily use SB on both machines while keep all the SB data in sync.

Seems to me every time I BACKUP then IMPORT, that I am essentially DOUBLING my database file?  Is that right?

Honestly, I don't really need SYNC, I just need to way to easily EXPORT the SB data from one machine and IMPORT it into another machine (without having to go into the user folder, etc etc.)

Thanks...
