I'll try to help.

I need some additional info:

1) Which OS are you running?
2) Do you backup your system on a scheduled basis?

Serious Problem with Session Buddy
I just restated Chrome and Session Buddy stopped working (seemed to crash), I looked into the extensions and the only option it gave me was to 'repair', without being given any other warning I hit repair and it restarted BUT FROM SCRATCH...!?! I have now seemingly lost ALL previous Saved Sessions, History, Settings, EVERYTHING...!?!?!
Please help me, this is a catastrophic problem for me...

Thank you for your reply Hans.
Firstly, I deleted my first post as I sent it using my company profile and it included the Footer / Disclaimer, etc. - I am not used to this system...
I also posted this initially on the Session Buddy page in the Chrome Web Store (Support - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/session-buddy/edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko/support) but have just deleted the post.

In response to your questions:
  1. OS = Windows 8.1
  2. No, I do not backup our system on a scheduled basis...I know I should but...!?!
Any assistance you are willing and able to provide would be very much appreciated - a lot of time and effort went into the system...
Thank you,
Jack.

Without a backup, chances of extension data recovery are slim after reinstalling/repairing an extension, but there's a couple of things you can try:

1) check for a previous version of the SB local user data folder. This feature is turned off by default for Win8 so this is something you or your IT dept would have had to explicitly enable. If you do find a previous version of the folder, I can walk you through restoring it.

2) Check to see if there is more than one file in the SB local user data folder. If so, let me know and we can go from there.

I was not aware when I received the error that 'repair' would actually reinstall the extension...
I have looked into fixing the issue myself and found the file and copied it elsewhere - was not sure if it was the version before the problem or not...
I found one file (named: 18, size: 48 KB)
In the Folder: ...\databases\chrome-extension_edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko_0

Yes except that in Win8.1 the feature is disabled by default.

"I was not aware when I received the error that 'repair' would actually reinstall the extension..."

I agree this is something Chrome should warn about and provide an option for saving/porting the data. Unfortunately, that's outside of the control of the extension.

"I found one file (named: 18, size: 48 KB)"

If SB is functioning without error, then this is the current data file.

When you right-click the user data folder, does Windows provide an option to "Restore previous versions" ?

Hans,
  • I know that it is outside your control but just extremely frustrating...
  • When I right-click the user data folder, Windows DOES NOT provide any option to "Restore previous versions"...
What do you reckon...? Any ideas...?
Jack.

I sympathize with your frustration. I wish there was more I could do to help.

I know this doesn't address your current situation, but going forward one way to mitigate data loss is to back up via SB's gear menu > Export  > Backup file.

...A lot of work now gone...!!!!!
I know I should backup and now will be doing so...
I just wish that there was some warning or something to advise that all data would be lost...
It was just seemingly a simple error (corrupted file or something similar - cannot recall exactly) and the only option SEEMED to be to 'repair' - I had NO IDEA that I would lose EVERYTHING...
Please PLEASE warn your other users somehow of this issue as I'm certain they would thank you for it...
I appreciate your efforts,
Jack.

I know it's a serious problem, but there's not much that can be done in the way of preemptively warning of the dangers of repairing the extension.

We could try to direct users to a post from within the app, but only a small % of users would end up reading and later remembering to heed the warning during the unlikely event of a mishap. Weighing the overall effectiveness of such a warning against its liabilities, it's not clear what the best approach is.

One thing we've considered is putting up a one-time notification to call attention to the in-app backup feature and encourage users to backup regularly.

Ultimately, the solution to data loss mitigation is cloud storage. That's something we're working on, but it's a longer road.

I'm truly sorry for the frustration you've incurred.
