Theyve been good ("Resident Evil") and bad ("Rock of the Dead"). There are serious games like "Left 4 Dead" and comical games like "Plants vs. Zombies." The dead have even risen in scenarios where you wouldn't expect them, like "Call of Duty" and "Red Dead Redemption." And they never stop coming.

The drama takes place on a fictional island called Banoi. Your character wakes up after a night of carousing to discover that most of the people on the island are afflicted with something much worse than a hangover. After fleeing your hotel and meeting up with some fellow survivors, you have two goals: rescue other noninfected humans and find a way off Banoi.

The open-world structure of "Dead Island" distinguishes it from the competition. Instead of following a linear plot, you usually have a variety of side missions you can tackle in between major story events. It's closer in spirit to "Grand Theft Auto," and you can run over pedestrians without feeling guilty.

You have to scrounge up whatever weapons you can; initially, all you have to defend yourself with are broomsticks or kitchen knives. Early on, though, "Dead Island" lets you modify your gear, so you can add nails to a baseball bat or build an electric charge into a machete. Guns do become available eventually, but ammunition is scarce, so you have to use them sparingly.

The ability to upgrade your weapons as well as your own survival skills adds a welcome role-playing element to "Dead Island." And I enjoyed the freedom to explore its expansive environments, although you always have to be on your guard for hungry monsters.

The Dead Sea is a lifeless body of water between Israel and Jordan. A searingly high salt level inhibits any life-forms calling the Dead Sea home. No fish, no insects or even plants can be found in The Dead Sea. The salt level, which is 10 times saltier than the ocean, is so high that it has become a popular tourist attraction to float on the surface. However, one defiant tree made us question if life in the Dead Sea was possible.

In Ein Bokek, near Arad, we were driving towards Mitzpe Ramon to explore the desert. Out of the car window, we spotted a tree out in the Dead Sea. It was seemingly floating in the middle of nowhere. We decided to stop and explore the area when we returned from the desert.

Two of the girls in our group decided they wanted to find out first-hand and began swimming out to the tree. Swimming in The Dead Sea is much harder than it seems as you cannot splash any water into your eyes or mouth or agony will ensue. The buoyancy also makes regular swimming strokes very awkward. It took the girls more than 15 minutes to swim out to the island.

Meanwhile, I was already flying high above them making an inspection of my own via my drone. As soon as I saw the salt formation, the inner pool of water and the tree itself, I knew this was a very special and very unique spot. I shot several images from different angles, sometimes flying only inches above the still water for the right perspective.

The girls arrived out to the salt formation island and hung out in what appeared to be a natural hot tub. The view from the salt formation looked back over the hotels, most of which housed guests who had no idea of what this spot actually looked like, which is a strange idea to be so close to such beauty and be totally unaware of its existence.

The tree was placed there or planted there if you like, by a local artist. Each day he paddleboards out to the tree and puts mud around the tree for nutrients. Essentially it is an art installation, possibly to shed light on the fact that the Dead Sea is slowly dying itself as its shoreline recedes every year.

Hi - Awesome blog! Did you get approval from Jordan to use the drone? How long did the approval take? Also, which drone insurance did you go with (Jordan requires insurance now)? I would really appreciate your input!

@Josephus, if you read the article you'd know it doesn't thrive on it's own, a local artist put it there and packs mud around it everyday so it can live. So yes it's really there, no it doesn't thrive on it's own but with help from a local it will live for awhile for sure.

Our ocean and the array of species that call it home are succumbing to the poison of plastic. Examples abound, from the gray whale that died after stranding near Seattle in 2010 with more than 20 plastic bags, a golf ball, and other rubbish in its stomach to the harbor seal pup found dead on the Scottish island of Skye, its intestines fouled by a small piece of plastic wrapper.

A recent study found that sea turtles that ingest just 14 pieces of plastic have an increased risk of death. The young are especially at risk because they are not as selective as their elders about what they eat and tend to drift with currents, just as plastic does.

Plastic waste kills up to a million seabirds a year. As with sea turtles, when seabirds ingest plastic, it takes up room in their stomachs, sometimes causing starvation. Many seabirds are found dead with their stomachs full of this waste. Scientists estimate that 60 percent of all seabird species have eaten pieces of plastic, a figure they predict will rise to 99 percent by 2050.

Plastic waste can encourage the growth of pathogens in the ocean. According to a recent study, scientists concluded that corals that come into contact with plastic have an 89 percent chance of contracting disease, compared with a 4 percent likelihood for corals that do not.

It wouldn't be Hell-A without Venice Beach, and it wouldn't be Dead Island 2 without zombies. You can gain some serious XP and levels at Venice Beach, as there are many activities and sidequests to complete. The Muscle Beach, once a hot spot for gym bros to lift and tan, has now become a steroid horror filled with Crusher Apex Zombies.

Venice Beach has 6 Fuse Box locations. This is a great deal more than most areas of Hell-A. Therefore you may want to level your character before unlocking them to drop more powerful weapons.

You'll have to travel to every corner of the map. However, it shouldn't take you long to unlock every Zomproof Slayer Hoard containers. That said, you will need to reload the area or travel to a different area of Hell-A to restock on Fuses since you can only carry two Fuses at a time.

The Zomproof Slayer Hoard chest will be found on the back of the wall in the middle of the parking lot. This area has a high zombie spawn rate of Slobbers, Runners, Spiky Runners, and Bursters, so stay vigilant.

The Tower Fuse Box can be found on the tower's first floorfacing the beach. Opening the door with the fuse is only the first step in obtaining the weapon from the Zomproof Slayer Hoard chest.

This Fuse Box can be found next to Marla's Tapas & Tacos, located across the street from the Blue Crab Grill to the east. You will need to go to the back of the building to fix the fuse and then walk back to the front of the shop.

Lt. Land's Case can be found within the army barracks near the MilitaryCommsarea of Venice Beach. The area has three army tents, but you'll want to enter the tent where you find Lt. Ford during the [Redacted] Lost & Found quest.

The West Coast Weights Cooler is found at the Muscle Beach Strongman Competition area of Venice Beach south of the military quarantine zone. You won't be able to open this container until you've completed The Giant-Slayer main story quest.

Jake is easy enough to dispatch. However, you will want to watch out for the Inferno Crushers in the area as they will ignite the spilled fuel and red barrels found in this area.

To get inside, hold a storefront fence button down and wait for it to ascend before entering. It can be tricky to access if there are zombies around. However, inside, you'll be safe from the undead outside.

The Tasty Donut Store is located west of the Blue Crab Grill and across the parking lot. You can't miss it from its pink color. Be careful. This area is filled with Slobbers and Bursters.

To acquire Delgado's Supply Case Key,exit the beach side of the Tower where the death pits are located and walk west towardscontainer 66. This is the same area where you obtain the legendary Bodycount Assault Rifle during the [REDACTED] Lost & Found Side Quest.

Pvt. Delgado can be found roaming around the entrance of the container and will drop the Delgado's Supply Case Keywhen killed. This is an easy enough fight. Watch out for the Burster hiding in the showers.

The Gang Green Gate Key is required to open the gate at the back of the store in the parking lot where you initially fight Dillon during The Giant-Slayer Storyquest.

Normally, a few zombies spawn in this area. However, entering this area with the Organ Donor Side Quest active will cause many Bursters and Slobbers to spawn.

Once you've dealt with the zombies in the area, open the Venice Kitchen shutters revealing that the survivors died days ago and a Slobber named One Of Burt's Group likely devoured them.

Burning Walkers and Runners will spawn each time you ignite a Death Pit. These zombies are immune to fire damage. However, you can extinguish them by luring them into the ocean.
