Hitman: Blood Money is a stealth-action video game developed by IO Interactive and released by Eidos Interactive. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade in May 2021. It is an upgraded version of Hitman: Contracts, and the second installment in the Hitman series. Like its predecessors, it is a point-and-click stealth-adventure game, in which the player takes on the role of a hired assassin in a world where assassination is big business...
In this game, once you have chosen your Agent, there are several Contracts that you have to complete, each of them featuring a new character. Once all of the Contracts have been fulfilled, the game ends and you have the choice of continuing your adventure or switching to another Contracts level. Unlike Hitman: Gotham City Adventures and previous games in the Hitman series, where you play as an original character, in this game you play as an "undead" hitman, who can be heard conversing over the radio. The Xbox Live Arcade version features voiceovers, as well as art and movie cut-scenes, whereas the other versions only feature text.
The story of the video game takes place in a world where corporate interests rule, and where those whom the corporations want dead often find their bodies in mass graves. There are six different classes you can choose from, each providing a different mix of abilities, making each level unique. A new facility called the Vanishing Act is being constructed, where any hitman that is killed in your area will not re-appear. Your clients can also connect with you, using an instant messenger, to discuss jobs for you, and you can use a computer to keep track of what they have done. As in the previous games, you get three chances to succeed at a job, but if you fail you lose the job, and if you succeed you get double the money that you would have got in the previous games.
Codename 47 is a third-person action/stealth combo which revolves around Agent 47, a genetically enhanced human clone, who is subjected to a series of challenging assassinations which must be completed.
During these assassinations, Agent 47 (controlled by the player) can acquire and use a wide range of weapons, starting from semi-automatic pistols to automatic rifles. However, more silent weaponry, such as the Fiber Wire, or the Oyabun Knife is also available. The weaponry varies on the mission played, so as Plutonium Runs Loose, for example, allows the player to buy a "minigun," while The Lee Hong Assassination only offers a list of handguns and sub-machine guns, although higher-caliber weapons such as the Blaser Jagdwaffen R93 Sniper can usually be found on location.
Agent 47's movements are controlled with basic turning, strafing and walking/running. Agent 47 is able to climb ladders when necessary, and has enough physical strength to throw himself from two adjacent balconies or platforms, drag bodies of any body type, and, due to his genetic combination, can disguise as generally any European or European-descended person.
Each level in the game takes place in an open environment, populated with non-playable characters (such as civilians armed guards and targets). Although mission criteria may vary, the goal is generally to find Agent 47's assigned target and kill them through any effective means possible. The path may appear linear at first, but it is possible through various ways to approach a target and complete a mission without directly eliciting a violent reprisal.
Before every assignment, the player is provided with a briefing, consisting of intelligence on the target, a map detailing the area where 47 is to encounter said target, and a list of weapons that they can purchase. The briefing is managed by a controller at the Agency, and every agent is assigned his own controller (Agent 47's controller being Diana Burnwood). The intelligence is usually a picture of the target, with video footage as well, along with information including height, weight and a brief rundown of their careers.
The game is based on the disguise system. Save for the Tutorial and the Colombian arc, the player begins all missions wearing Agent 47's Suit, which restricts access to non-public areas; but, most importantly, it almost always prevents the player from reaching the target. Thus, Agent 47 can acquire certain disguises by finding them or killing other characters in order to steal their clothes. Doing so allows him to pass by security unnoticed and possibly even to carry weapons openly. The discarded clothes are folded and left on the ground, visible to the player but not to others, and can be worn again later. The body of the victim can be dragged to a secluded location in order to prevent other people seeing it and triggering alarms. Agent 47's disguise will be compromised as soon as the body from which it was taken is discovered, or an illegal action (deemed "Suspicious") is done under the disguise.
Agent 47 creates sound while walking and running, which alerts any hostile characters in the close vicinity if an illegal action is being committed. To counter, Codename 47 heavily relies on a sneaking function, which causes Agent 47 to move in a low, stalking manner, which is also silent.
Although Codename 47 is a stealth game (though not necessarily enforcing that ideal), the game still allows the player to engage at their own discretion, highlighting the game's recurring sandbox element. There are consequences, however, depending on the player's actions.
There are incentives in the form of financial rewards and penalties. For example, if the player kills civilians, it's possible there could be a deduction of $2000 for "cleaning." This deduction grows depending on the number of non-target casualties the player inflicts. As money is used to purchase weapons and ammo during the course of the game, the player is pressured to utilize stealth and disguise mechanics for the most cost-effective method to take out targets.
Note: While the general plot of Codename 47 follows a distinct path, many elements such as the assassination methods and character interactions are subject to the player's decisions. The game offers several events and methods to targets, along with multiple decisions based on the sandbox gameplay. This story synopsis concentrates on the main plot thread of the game the player would generally encounter on their first time playing.
47 was ordered to get rid of his hospital robes, a suit awaiting him on the other side of the door. With the voice instructing him further on, 47 practiced his movement fluidity and strength through an obstacle course, learning to use different kinds of weapons, which finally ended with 47 disguising himself as one of the orderlies to escape. Meanwhile, the man controlling the loudspeaker watched 47 on a camera near the exit during the escape responded with a satisfied laugh.
After #47 escaped the asylum, he joined the International Contract Agency, a contract-killing company and it's assumed that he acquires the title of Agent, considering the talent displayed at the sanitarium. Almost a year after his escape, Agent 47 is deployed in Hong Kong for a rather difficult assignment: the assassination of the Red Dragon Triad leader Lee Hong, one of the most dangerous people in Hong Kong.
The Agency, through 47's handler Diana Burnwood, stressed that while it was possible Agent 47 can reach Hong and eliminate him, it would be impossible for him to flee the city alive afterwards and thus devised an intricate plan that would almost destroy the Red Dragon Triad externally, subsequently weakening Lee Hong's influence over the Hong Kong mob and authorities, allowing Agent 47's escape following the hit.
Agent 47 began setting the plan in motion by killing a Red Dragon negotiator during a peace meeting with the Blue Lotus Triad. Likely taken as a hostile action against each-other, the latter triad came in high numbers to Lee Hong's Headquarters, the Wang Fou Restaurant for a peace truce.
Agent 47 intercepted this meeting as well and massacred the entire Blue Lotus delegation, bringing the two triads on the brink of an all-out gang war. The police, who were on Lee Hong's payroll, intervened to preserve the peace. One last meeting was set on neutral grounds, a small fish restaurant, with the Hong Kong Chief of Police himself participating in the negotiations. Agent 47 murdered the chief and the Blue Lotus negotiator (while making it seem like the Red Dragon Triad was behind the act), finally severing Lee Hong's ties with the authorities and halting Lee Hong's influence.
With the Red Dragon Triad weakened, Lee Hong was finally in a vulnerable enough position, allowing Agent 47 to engage. The client, however, wanted the Red Dragon Triad completely wiped out, so in addition to killing Lee Hong, Agent 47 had to steal a Jade Figurine from the triad's headquarters, as losing the figurine would damage the triad's morale beyond repair, let alone the death of their leader.
The Jade Figurine was locked behind one of the various safes in Hong's restaurant. Agent 47 acquired the safe combination from Lei Ling, a prostitute working in Hong's brothel, in exchange for helping her escape, and learns the safe's location from a captured CIA agent named Smith. After freeing the CIA agent, he informed 47 about Zhun, Lee Hong's large bodyguard, who followed the triad leader everywhere, even tasting his food.
Agent 47 acquired the Jade Figurine and traded it for a vial of poison, which he then used on Lee Hong's food. Zhun, however, tasted the meal first, exposing 47's attempt to poison Lee Hong. Hong ran away, and 47 tried to pursue him but was held down by the dying Zhun. The agent managed to kill the bodyguard and proceeded to track down Hong to his palace behind the restaurant. He ultimately killed him. Agent 47 found a cryptic letter on Hong's body, detailing a secret project that Hong was apparently involved in. Afterward, 47 escaped Hong Kong unscathed, on Hong's speedboat.
