Also, I think my enthusiasm for this idea might actually work against me as the primary author of the proposal. In seeking consensus, I suspect I might not provide much inertia against other contributors. If two people disagree on a detail, I could end up editing the proposal frequently and directly - and irritating one of the contributors. (This happened very recently on another project, so I'm sensitive about offending people who are trying to help.)
I do not intend to ask for stage 1 just yet, primarily because I haven't
been through this process before, and I'd be coming before the
committee as an Invited Expert again. But if this task group (SES-strategy) thinks it's okay to ask for stage 1, then so be it. It's very hard for me to find the right level of enthusiasm for this idea - both "too pushy" and "eh, that's interesting" are extremes I'm trying to avoid.
I hope I don't have to repeat the full talk on membranes Mark and I gave four years ago. I am on our weekly calendar to run through this on August 24.
