There is also another possible solution (but less possible), they might be using POP3.
Then they would just make a check every X minutes on a catch-all address and then forward the message to the right person.

Elastic Email has a simple API for creating two-way anonymous email routing just like craigslist or airbnb. It uses an inbound email api to call a web-hook on your server to resolve the correct email addresses and then relays the email accordingly. It only takes a few lines of code. They have a detailed tutorial here:

I keep ending up replying late to customers who email me via craigslist because the emails end up going to the junk mail folder. How do I fix this? This is costing me customers and I can't find any way to get them to exempt craigslist emails.

I have this issue, too. While the messages are in Junk mail, there is no option to mark them as "no junk" in the Mail app. When i right-click the messages the only option is to mark them as junk, even though they are in the junk folder. I tried adding @sale.craigslist.org as a contact (didn't work), and I have tried setting up a rule now, except using sale.craigslist.org. A safe senders list would be nice....

Change your settings in preferences for suspected junk emails to go to inbox but be marked as junk. Then you will be able to mark them as not junk. If they are already in your junk email folder you won't have the option to Mark as not junk .

UPDATE [2013-02-13]: According to this article on Craigslist, as of February 10, 2013, they have implemented and are testing the idea I described below for fixing the problem described in this posting.

I recently placed a for-sale ad on Craigslist. I anonymized my email address in the ad, which means that the published email address was a random one at craigslist.org, and any responses sent to that address would be forwarded on to me.

Within 24 hours of sending my reply, I started to receive supposed responses to my ad, sent directly to my real email address, not through the anonymous address at craigslist.org. Some of these responses even used my real name in them. I received six such emails in three days. Yikes!

3. If you have GMail, setup 2-step authentication. That way anytime someone tries to login to your account, they will be prompted for a security code before they can even sign in. When you set this up, it will either call you or send a text, to the number you specify when you set it up. This is a useful security measure.

I keep getting weird messages asking to purchase things I have posted, with a cashiers check they send. They want my name and address to send it to me and even offer more to hold it, then I do not hear back from them once I give them the info.

I placed a craigslist add for selling furniture. While the ad was live I received 8 porn emails wanting to meet for sex. A week after the ad expired I have received over 30 such emails. I have not responded to any of them or clicked on any links in the emails. I have reported it to craigslist but no response. I have always had good success with craigslist ads until now.

Are you kidding me? Sure, I could use some cash but when in doubt I say ignore and delete. This recent attack appears to be nothing more than an embellishment of previous scam procedure. Overall CL has worked well for me both as a buyer and seller. Honest replies should be obvious.

I got an email saying is the item still available and i responded yes they said i am okay with the asking price can i send you a check and i will add 50. To hold the item for me and will arrange for pick up when the check is cashed just send me uour name and address and i will send it overnight ups so i did and the i asked where are you located and no response did i get scamed or can they do something with my name and address?

However, have the check sent to any of the following addresses: your local congressman, senator, police chief, FBI guy, CIA guy . . . anyone like that. Use their legit local office addresses (not their D.C. addresses).

The same has been happening to me! So far I have recieved 10 + such replys that I am sure contain porn like the first one did OMG who wants to see that crap ..l. not me. I am making a list of the return name (do not know if that will help) and am sending to FBI unless someone has a better idea because on the first couple I got I reported to craigs list but NOTHING has happened besides I keep getting them. Please if there has been a way discovered to stop this let me know!

Type it in as if it were you real name when signing up for the new email account. Also, Put in false information that could potentially protect you if someone were to hack your email account. (Birthdays, Address, Phone #)
This information doesnt have to be real in order to create and account. This is a simple way to protect yourself and your information.

I am so sick of craigslist! It used to be a great site. but now if you post an add for ANYTHING 90% of the responses are from these so called spammers and scammers! I will no longer use craigslist because of it.

So here is what I have done.
Go to You can put in the email address that you got when they replayed to your post (there email address). Then you can put in your craigslist email address for that item, either from the post or when people respond to my post it comes up as the to address in my email client. I copy and past this into the senders email address (it usually is a bunch of numbers @sale.craigslist.org)

Thanks for posting about this. I receive a LOT of these type emails from craigslist ads, and figured they were scams. But when searching to verify they were ads, your article is all I was able to find about it.

Hi, I'm trying to scrape email addresses of listings on a craigslist sections. The problem I encounter is that once you click on a listing, you need to click a box to get the email, I am having problem selecting the email in the web scraper. Please help

This seems to work, but where I'm stuck is having it either navigate to main listing page where the listing-links are, OR click "next" within each listing link so it navigates to the next listing .. make sense?

When I get to the page that has the Reply button on it. I create a Element_Click. 2 selectors show up. Is the first one the Reply button and the second is the Email Text located at the bottom of the little pop up box appears. Or iis Selector 2 the Reply button and Selector is the email?

How often do you have non-responsive sellers? In particular, there are a number of listings in the Seattle area that get posted over and over, that I have sent mail on, and have never received a response. Usually for hard-to-find stuff for well under value. They never have a contact number posted or anything. They also never have a local location listed.

(I don't know what the scam would be in this particular case, but more scam-savvy folks may be able to tell us both. But the non-responsive part is very common with Craigslist, on the part of both buyers and sellers. It really is the wild west of modern commerce.)

CL is so ridiculously unpredictable it's tough to say. I had a guy do something similar with me once...I wonder some times if their inclination to respond is based on the content of your original email. When I write to a seller inquiring to buy things, I'm always friendly and informative, make sure I leave good contact info, and I try to give them my first name or my general location so that they know I'm not a bot or a Nigerian scam.

I often don't get responded to, and I know most of the time, especially in the case of Lego, it is because someone else responded first or already claimed the item. You have to answer really fast in my area. But once or twice there have been times when a seller didn't respond and re-listed the item, and ignored me yet again. I think it could be that I tell them where I am and they decide they don't want to deal with me because I'm too far away, or they are scared for some reason or another or want a female to respond.

I once bought a 7965 MF off CL and it was plainly obvious the seller was a woman, she insisted on meeting me in an open, public place in broad daylight, I had no problem obliging, but then even when I showed up and paid her there was some serious tension there, she was definitely scared of me and I only stand 5'10" and weigh only 165, it was really weird and made for an extremely awkward exchange. I just tried to be polite and went about my way.

Funny you should mention this topic. I am having the same thing happen to me in the Tri State area. The person has great deals on older sets with plenty of picturer and info but yet they have no location listed. they also aren't responding to the 10 emails i sent so far. The person was listing them last night and i attempted to contact during the middle of them listing other sets with no luck. I feel your pain.

In my experience, if you offer cash for an in-person exchange and get no response, it's a scam. The lister is trying to attract buyers who will send money orders or wire money, then they can take the money and run. The next time you find a retired set for well below market value, shoot off an email offering to wire money for shipment. Either the seller will agree, in which case you know it's probably a scam, or the seller will suggest a cash deal. Either way you'll get a response and you can move forward.

Haha, your last line is funny. Yes, if these are scams, I want to try to mess with them a bit, but I have to figure out how to get them to engage first. I have tried multiple methods of text similar to what you mention. It doesn't really frustrate me to not get a response, it is just confusing.

It frustrates me for sure. I see a Taj Mahal for $500, I email or text the seller, I wait days with no response... I want to do evil things to them, like spam the hell out if their inbox or call them every night at 2:15 a.m.

Usually when i sell on craigslist and people email me asking questions like still got it? Have it? Ill buy it ... with no contact info or phone number to get a hold of them I just ignore those emails. Did you leave a phone number they can reach you at in your emails?
