These days people have set up a raspberry pi as an email server.

The Gmail app on android is store and forward when connected ie works off line.

If serval could be used as the transport layer and a raspberry pi hung off a mesh extender then LAN based email should be possible.  LAN based would eliminate the possibility of spam.

Taking this further email messages to go off the LAN could be sent to a designated android device, forwarded to an email address on the internet then sent on.  The crude way would be carry it to an internet cafe, send and receive emails.

Return messages could be handled manually the same way.  ie please send xyz to the field etc.

Lots of practical considerations like packaging the raspberry pi or similar, perconfiguring the email server and looking after the accounts on the LAN.

Would you want to use Gmail or another app?  etc etc.

Hello,

If you use email, then you have the problem of routing. Yes, it could be done, but it is non-trivial.  Also, with a flooding DTN, you really need all email to be end-to-end encrypted, so no "normal" email, which complicates things. By the time you have solved those, you have basically arrived at Serval Rhizome in any case.

Paul.

I was thinking in terms of a single email server on the network and using serval as a transport layer to connect the andriod devices to the email server.  That way no routing would be involved.

The objective would be to lower training costs on the user interface side.

Having seen it take three years for users to accept room booking with Exchange I have great respect for user interfaces.

But it is just idle thoughts a Raspberry pi environment is not a robust one.  A space in the wrong place in a config file can block the machine.

Win 10 based laptop or Intel NUC might be a more robust solution but you're effing complexity which is never good.
