This patch update provides an important bug fix for a concurrency issue which caused the client application component of SEB to crash randomly. Below a list of the most prominent new features and changes:

SEB 3.3 improves accessibility and security and allows to export SEB settings as fully contained configuration links or QR codes. Optionally it supports full SEB Server integration with Moodle. SEB 3.3.3 contains important security fixes: Please update soon!

When using the optional SEB Server, the App Signature Key functionality allows automated application integrity checks similar to the manual use of the Browser Exam Key. Additionally, the new server-driven Browser Exam Key can be used for improved SEB Server integration with LMS/assessment systems like Moodle.

Note: This version does not contain the Zoom integration for exam proctoring or exam support which was contained in SEB 3.2rc. There is a non-public SEB Alliance Edition, which continues to support Zoom integration. If you are interested to use this Zoom integration, please contact alli...@safeexambrowser.org.

Note: Due to an issue in iOS 17, SEB for iOS can crash on some devices when media (videos, HTML5 audio etc.) is played. This issue seems to be fixed in iOS 17.3. Other crashes happened when any text input field was being displayed or activated (taking input focus). This issue was fixed in iOS 17.1. Also see the discussion in this GitHub issue.

IMPORTANT for SEB Integrations: The classic WebView (the iOS framework UIWebView) has been DEPRECATED by Apple years ago, it's no longer maintained and will at some point be removed completely from iOS/iPadOS. It's crucial that assessment systems with SEB Integrations, which are using the Browser Exam Key (BEK) and Config Key (CK), transition to the SEB Javascript API to query these keys, as the modern WebView (iOS/macOS framework WKWebView) doesn't support transmitting the BEK/CK in HTTP request headers. See our documentation about how to adopt the SEB JS API.

See release notes for complete list of new features and changes. Check out the SEB for iOS manual which explains all features (currently being updated). In addition, we published a first version of a tutorial which will help exam administrators to better understand how to configure and use SEB for iOS. It also includes how SEB for iOS can be used together with the Apple Classroom app. More topics will be added to this tutorial over time.

A stand-alone tool to manually verify the integrity of a Safe Exam Browser installation on Windows. This application is intended for use cases like BYOD exams where candidates have complete control over their systems and thus could be trying to use a manipulated build of Safe Exam Browser to perform an exam.

Exam proctors/invigilators can use SEB Verificator to make sure candidates are using an original, unmanipulated SEB version in BYOD exams (on location). For example use a USB stick drive with SEB Verificator on it and either check randomly some or all student devices and start the correct SEB version, optionally also with a specific configuration file.

This plugin ensures that the right and unmodified SEB version using the correct (secure) settings is connecting to a Moodle quiz. After installing this plugin you can copy the Browser Exam Key hash code generated by SEB for the SEB settings used into the quiz settings in Moodle (see manuals for Windows/macOS versions of SEB).

This plugin ensures that the right and unmodified SEB version using the correct (secure) settings is connecting to an ILIAS instance with a specific user role. After installing this plugin you can copy the Browser Exam Key hash code generated by SEB for the SEB settings used into the ILIAS settings (see manuals for Windows/macOS versions of SEB).

The quiz has built in settings to allow secure exams using the Safe Exam Browser. Safe Exam Browser is offered under a Mozilla Public Licence. The application is available for Windows, macOS and iOS as open source software.

Safe Exam Browser is a customised web browser, available for Windows (7, 8.1, 10), macOS (starting 10.7, recommended 10.11 or newer) and iOS (9.3.5 or newer). The application must be downloaded and installed on the device that the student uses to attempt the quiz. The restrictions placed on students are similar to those in the quiz Extra restrictions on attempts > Browser security "Full screen pop-up with some JavaScript security" case, but because Safe Exam Browser is software running on the student's computer, it can do a much more effective job of restricting their actions.

In order to enable students to take an attempt with Safe Exam Browser, it is necessary to hand them a Safe Exam Browser configuration file which contains the rules applying. This Safe Exam Browser configuration file can either be generated using the Safe Exam Browser config tool (the documentation can be found under _usermanual_en.html#configuration) or directly within Moodle.

A Browser Exam Key or multiple Browser Exam Keys can be set to validate the SEB version(s) used by students to access the quiz, and to assure that the Safe Exam Browser client is correctly configured/secured for that specific quiz.

If there's two different values for e.g. "Enable quitting of SEB" in the template and the user interface, the value in the user interfaces is taken more into consideration. That means that a value not set/left empty does reset a value in the template.

Administrators can access Safe Exam Browser access rule configuration options by expanding Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Quiz > Safe Exam Browser access rule and manage Safe Exam Browser configuration templates under Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Quiz > Safe Exam Browser templates. To restrict members of the faculty of being able to manipulate some settings, do apply capabilities to the roles.

Here, the administrator, manager or other persons with the required capabilities manage the Safe Exam Browser configuration templates which are presented to choose from when configuring a quiz.
In order to appear as choice options, templates have to be enabled.
The table gives an overview of the templates and whether they are available as choice as well as whether there are currently in use in some quiz.

From Home of Off-site: In cases where students will be using their own devices for taking online exams, you will need to ensure that they have downloaded and installed the Safe Exam Browser on their computer Prior to taking the quiz. SEB currently works in Windows, Mac OS and iOS operating systems. **Please note that SEB will not work for students who wish to complete online tests using an Android phone or tablet.

On Campus-Students will be able to launch the SEB test without installing software. However, **before scheduling an exam on-campus instructors should test that SEB is working as expected in the venue where your students will be taking the test. Contact the HelpDesk if you encounter any issues before the date of the test.

Whether students will be at home or on campus, add this link to theSafe Exam Browser a Guide for Studentsto your Moodle course and provide the guide to students so they are prepared to take a quiz/exam in your Moodle course.

If you set the option 'Show Safe Exam Browser download button' to 'Yes', students will see a 'Download Safe Exam Browser' button when they start the test from Moodle - this may be confusing, so leave this option as 'No'. (And for on-campus tests we also want to hide this button, since the browser will already be installed on the computers in the labs.)

For the simplest setup, leave the other options as the default and scroll to the bottom of the page to save the settings. If the exam has more complex requirements (e.g. you want to allow students access to a few selected websites), contact the Helpdesk and we will work with you to configure your test.

A popup window appears (enabling popup windows is a necessary step for students to take prior to attempting a Moodle Quiz using SEB - it's covered in the Student Guide to using SEB which should be provided to students prior to quiz time. If students select 'Always allow moodle.clarkson.edu" to open links of this type in the associated app', they will notn't see the popup window the next time they launch a Moodle Quiz in SEB on the same computer.

SEB will launch. The student will be asked to enter their Clarkson username and password, after which they will be taken to the Moodle Quiz launch page, this time within the SEB. The student can then click 'Attempt quiz now' to begin the quiz.

Recommendation: Depending on the settings for the quiz, students can be prompted to download SEB when they try to access a Moodle Quiz, so downloading and installing the SEB PRIOR to the test will save time, and will allow students to launch the installed SEB when the time comes to take the test.

Do I understand correctly that the embedded video works correctly in Moodle when you open the exam in a standard browser? If yes, the issue might really be the codec and you'd need to convert the video. I suggest you'll google for an adequate codec, I do not have any knowledge regarding video codecs.

Hi Damian,
sorry to chase this again, but I mentioned a while ago that we can't get any MP4s (AAC, H.264) to work. I believe that this is a pretty standard format which works on Windows 2.4.1 and Mac 2.3.2 but not Windows 3.1.1
I wondered if this is a bug?
Cheers
