Im using windows 10.So I have installed outlook.office365.com as a PWA through Edge Beta (Chromium based Edge). Now I would like to associate it with mailto links. How do I do that?I haven't found any information on how to use PWAs as a standard app for email on windows 10 so any pointers would be appreciated.

I think we can't associate outlook PWA with mailto links. mailto will open the system's default email client. What we select in the default app setting will decide which client the mailto will launch.

Now (on macOS) clicking on a mailto: link opens a OWA tab in a normal Chrome tab. The browser bar has a "pop out" icon to "Open with" the PWA which seems to work fine. This is Good Enough for me, because it doesn't waken the sleeping giant of desktop Outlook and I can quickly close the tab because I often click mailto by mistake anyway.

Looking into why the link does't "deep link" into the PWA, it seems there's a property intent_filters that needs to be set on the PWA app manifest, but it's not: i.e. I think that's enough improvement, but somebody else is welcome to hack that too.

Thanks for the detailed rundown. It just confirms my decision that, when Outlook 2010 that is my current client ceases to be viable, I will move to a non-Microsoft email client/calendar/contacts system. I know I am using a very old version of Outlook, but I am careful, and my footprint as a retiree is fairly small.

The real reason is, again, money. Microsoft would prefer organizations to use their Exchange Online hosted service rather than run their own Exchange Server. This is just another move to encourage that profitable change, for Microsoft.

I am using the desktop 2019 program. I gave in to the temptation to try the new version, since it promised to allow me to switch back. Unfortunately, the new version locked up, preventing me from easily doing that. A few minutes with my backup program repaired my error of judgement.

Web only means that it is will be next to worthless for any business travelers. Microsoft must have people who know that airline WiFi may or may not work on the flight you are taking, Airborne bandwidth is limited, thus you may not be able to download or upload large PDFs, graphics, ACAD or other files which might be attached to an email.

I have been wanting a replacement for Outlook for Office 365 because OST files have a size limit that is much smaller than the mailbox size Office 365 gives the users. We deal with long projects lasting 5 to 10 years. My project managers need to see emails from years ago but if you enable that, the OST files get too large and Outlook fails. This Outlook (new) does fix that but at the expense of everything you related in your post.

Use Terms. Microsoft 365 Family, Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Basic, Sway, OneNote.com and any other Microsoft 365 app or Service or Office-branded Service is for your personal, non-commercial use, unless you have commercial use rights under a separate agreement with Microsoft.

I have relied on the rich feature set offered by Outlook Tasks to manage the workflow in my medical practice and find Microsoft To Do in its current form to be a totally inadequate replacement. For over fifteen years, I have modeled much of my use of Outlook Tasks from the Total Workday Control books by Michael Linenberger that highlight the tremendous power and flexibility provided by Tasks. He outlines in one of his most recent blog posts the anticipated demise of Outlook Tasks much sooner than comments here seem to suggest ( -on-windows-desktop-outlook-tasks-sunsetting/#more-5485).

This morning Outlook-New barged in and installed itself on my old Surface tablet. I was not happy until I referred back to this article, switched off New and re-opened the old mail app. Thanks so much for keeping us informed. Wsjudson

A short notification is displayed to users who launch Mail and Calendar on their devices. This notification is removed automatically and users are redirected to the new Outlook app afterwards. There appears to be no option to stop the redirection or do anything about it.

I'm running into the same problem on my Macbook. The answer I got from support it quoted below. I will tell you my quick fix has been to use outlook web version until they get the glitch figured out or send some sort of mass update for MacBook users.

Alot of anoying things going on with Hubspot on Outlook for mac. It seems nothing gets fixed, and Hubpot and Microsoft (Outlook) just blame eachother for years with no results for the users having the problems. I'm soooo tired.

The LOEB Club App developed by jls secured 2nd place in the top category Master of Swiss App at this year's Best of Swiss App Awards (BoSA)! For over 10 years, the BoSA event has been characterised by native apps and includes over 160 app submissions every year. In addition to winning gold in the Web App category, we have now also managed to beat native apps with a web app and take 2nd place.

In this blog post, I would like to shed light on the current state of progressive web apps (PWA), highlight changes since my last blog on PWAs in 2019 and give an outlook on their potential development. I use the terms Progressive Web App, PWA and Web App synonymously.

PWAs are essentially websites that look and feel like native apps. They allow users to have an app-like experience directly in their regular web browser without having to download a separate app from the app store first. Although they are basically websites, they can offer advanced features such as offline access, receiving push notifications, access to the camera and much more. More details on PWAs can be found in this jls blog post Progressive Web Apps from 2019.

The market share of PWAs is difficult to determine based on concrete figures since they were first introduced by Google in 2015. This is because PWAs are basically just websites that use a range of modern web tools to offer an app experience. Therefore, it is hard to tell from the outside whether it is an ordinary website or an advanced web app on the internet. However, we at jls have noticed that the demand for PWAs has increased significantly since our 2019 blog post. We have already successfully implemented numerous different PWAs for our customers.

Yes, the most significant change is that after many years Apple has finally given in to the common browser standard with regard to web push messages and has supported web push messages on iOS since iOS 16.4, which was released in March 2023.

Since web apps are basically websites, anything that is supported by the web browser is technically possible. Already well-known and widely used web APIs include microphone and camera access, GPS localisation and much more. Newer possibilities include access to Bluetooth sensors, Near Field Communication (NFC) to interact with NFC tags, the Payment API to simplify a payment process, the Web Cryptography API for cryptographic operations such as the generation of key pairs for secure communication and of course much more.

The continuous expansion of available web APIs in popular web browsers enables web apps to utilise deep hardware integrations such as biometric login. As a result, web apps can now offer functions that were previously reserved exclusively for native apps.

The future of PWAs promises continued growth, innovation and increased integration into the way we use the internet. We are already seeing a lot of customers questioning the need for a native app. With modern web tools, deep hardware integrations can already be realised in web apps. For our web apps, we already use the Media API to scan barcodes with the smartphone camera, Web Push for notifications about new, interesting posts and the Cryptography API for complex, cryptic authentication processes to protect users.

The wide availability of web APIs on different browsers will remain a challenge as manufacturers can regulate this market. Nevertheless, PWAs are expected to continue to grow in importance as they combine the benefits of websites and mobile apps. The ongoing development of technologies and standards will help PWAs become an even more powerful and versatile solution for developers and businesses to provide users with a rich, user-friendly and flexible experience.

The decision as to whether an app should be developed as a native app or a web app is not an easy one. It's a choice that requires numerous considerations and has a significant impact on the user experience and the success of your app. As experts in both technologies, we at jls understand the challenges and benefits associated with choosing the right technology. Our goal is to help you understand the pros and cons of both approaches in the context of your specific requirements.
