If I search specifically by name it shows me all of the versions and then I can delete the ones that are in the "wrong" place, but I don't have the time or inclination (despite my love of procrastination by rearranging files) to search 1000 titles. So is there a simple Dropbox search function for duplicates, or do I have to download some kind of app that will do the job. Can you download file titles and locations to a spreadsheet? At least that would let me filter/sort and then go back and find the ones I want to delete.

If that's required, I don't want one that automatically deletes duplicates, I want to pick which ones are required, but if you have any recommendations of on that is easy to use and pretty much straight forward (nothing fancy required, just find the duplicates (or those that may have a similar name since sometimes they get saved with slightly different titles), I'd appreciate the help.

Hard to believe it has been almost exactly four years since my previous duplicate finder performance comparison (2018 edition)! Life has been very busy since, so dupd has not had a release with new functionality (I did release dupd 1.7.1 last year but it only contains build and test fixes, no functionality difference from 1.7).

The file set has a total of 154205 files. Of these, 18677 are unique sizes and 1216 were otherwise ignored (zero-sized or not regular files). This leaves 134312 files for further processing. Of these, there are 44926 duplicates in 13828 groups (and thus, 89386 unique files). It is the exact same data set as in the 2018 performance test run.

Some System Files need to have duplicates for your computer to work properly, and if you remove then odd things can start to happen.

Unless you are an advanced user trying to fix a broken computer you should leave the System files alone, tell Duplicate Finder to Ignore them.

With regard to deleting any selected duplicates - If they are locked then CCleaner won't be able to delete them, nothing should be able to delete them.

That's why you lock things, to prevent them being altered or deleted unless/until you unlock them again first.

With regard to backups-

It will find duplicates using whatever you have told it to look for as being duplicated.

If you tell it to look for names and nothing else it will find all files with the same name.

If you tell it to look for size and nothing else it will find all files of the same size (whatever their name).

If you tell it to look for name and size it will find all files with the same name that are also the same size.

And so on.

It will (should) always find backups - because both the original and the backup will match whatever you tell it to look for.

Backups will have the same name as the original. They have exactly the same contents so will be the same size. They will have the same modified date.

That's the whole point of a backup - it is a deliberate duplicate in case you lose the original.

If it wasn't identical to the original then there wouldn't be much point.

If you don't want Duplicate Finder to find your backups as duplicates then simply add your backup folder path as an 'Exclude' in Duplicate Finder.

If a path is excluded then it won't be searched.

I would love to see the development in this thread. I too have tried many many duplication finder app for photos. I have used Gemini II and Duplicator finder (or similar name) but none has impressed me. I am going to check out Photosweeper and PhotoMill too.

It accepts all kinds of files and separates duplicates on import. Once import is complete I remove the folder containing my sorted files and discard the rest of the library (which includes the folder of duplicates it rejected).
