I think that Snape lied about not hearing the entire prophesy.
Dumbledore seems truely worried after Harry tells him what Trelawney
just said. Dumbledore said Slughorn's patchwork was so poor that you
could tell the original memory must still be available. I think
Dumbledore's memory of the night Trelawney gave the prophesy is
actually faulty. Harry telling him what Trelawney said made Dumbldore
realize his memory of the event must be incorrect. He hasn't forgotten
the prophesy, no, but he had convinced himself that Snape didn't hear
the whole prophesy.

I think Snape planted the first bit of the prophesy to get the ball
rolling. I think he wanted to destroy Voldemort (for whatever personal
reason) and just lets Dumbldore believe what he wants to believe. I
think Snape wanted Voldemort to mark his own equal -- he just didn't
want it to be the son of James and Lily Potter....

Doesn't it strike you as odd that Snape would be upset about the
"chosen one" blonging to people he knew ... but not upset about
Voldemort killing just anyone's parents....

I think Snape knew exactly what he was doing to set up Voldemort for
his own downfall. I don't think he really cared that someone would die
or that a kid would grow up scarred and destined for so much hardship.
He was just horrified to realize the chosen kid belonged to Lily and
James.
