Is Trevor just a toad?

Why isn't he kept in a terrarium, so he won't escape all the time?

Why (and how) does Trevor end up right where he should be (i.e. at the
boats waiting for Neville to arrive)?

Why does he go to class with Neville? Why do the professors keep using
Trevor in their lessons (Flitwick makes Trevor fly around the room,
Snape turns Trevor into a tadpole with Shrinking Solution)?

Hey, and what about that Shrinking Solution? It didn't actually shrink
Trevor, it reversed time for him, like the hummingbird in the bell
jar.... Is there anything to this?
