Did someone (when Harry was a baby) alter Harry's memory of the attack
on the Potters?

On p. 13 (US ed, Scholastic) Dumbledore says, "Famous for something he
won't even remember" as if Dumbledore is sure Harry won't remember....

Was someone trying to make sure Harry wouldn't remember the details of
the attack? And would the intention be to spare him the painful
memories or to hide important info?

Well, we know JKR wouldn't want Harry to remember all the details too
soon, but what about characters' motives?
