For the most part, you program does exactly what I want it to do AND
displays it in an intuitive manner. The only real request I'd like to
see is if/when a series is cancelled/ended that it could get moved to
a new tab for finale'd/ended series. This would cut down on the
length hof the active list and inform users who might not be aware a
show has ended.

Other than that... AWESOME job, really diggin in this program!!!
Thanks for making it and all the time you put into tweaking it. If
you need a beta-tester, let me know.

Thanks very much! I see what I can do, some others have requested this, too.
In the meantime: I typically anounce beta releases on the SeriesGuide Twitter account. Or you can manually look on http://code.google.com/p/seriesguide/.

Good afternoon Uwe,

Just saw your great series guide program at an android phone from a collegue while discussing TV series. I immediatly went to the apps store on my iphone to find out it's not (yet) available.
I say "yet" as I'm hoping you have plans to make it available for the iphone as well. I looked at similar programs available but none come even close to your brilliant version.
Please let me know if you have any plans to release for the iphone as well.
I realy hope you do not force me to settle for anything less.

Keep up the good work.

Warm regards

Hi Markone,

I'm sorry to say that for now I have no plans whatsoever to make SeriesGuide for iOS. Or Windows Phone for that matter. I barely have time right now to maintain SeriesGuide. And there is this 99$ registration fee Apple charges ;) and the fact that I would have to redo everything in Object-C.
However if anyone feels to it (or knows an easy way to port to iOS and/or Windows Phone), all of the code is available on Google Code.

Regards,

Uwe

Hi Uwe,

Thanks for your quick reply. I fully undertstand you're not planning
to make it available in iOS. But it's a real los as for the users.
In the mean time I've been looking for a good alternative but still
haven't found one that comes close.
Again my compliments for your great work.
Let\s hope someone is willing and able to translate to iOS.

Since Uwe has no plans for iOS... here's the best one for that
platform: TV Forecast

It's pretty slick, sends you an alert 15 minutes before a show starts,
gives you a synopsis of each episode and lets you know if a series has
ended.
The one thing it doesn't really do is let you keep track of which
shows you've already seen. It's useful to see what's already aired or
when the next
show is due. I've used it considerably up until the Xoom and this
great app. Still have it on my iPhone, but prefer Series Guide so I
can actually
track what I've seen and do so on a larger screen.

Azayzel,

Thanks for your suggestion. In the mean time I looked around and tried
a couple of apps from the itunes store.
I ended up with Episodes and iTV shows. I'm still trying to identify
which one I prefer.
Both look alright and have the ability to tickmark the ones already
viewed.
However it still is only an alternative.
But that's what you get having an iPhone i guess.

Thanks

Mark

Hi

I've been using Seriesguide for a while and like it.

I have some requests/wishlist-thingies.

Would it be possible to be able to choose languade for seriesguid, not only use the default in your phone. The Swedish translation lacks at some points and I prefer apps in english (still I have my phone language as Swedish). It would be nice to be able to choose translation or not.

My second request is a possibility to hide/show shows where you have seen all episodes and there are none planned. I use Seriesguide to keep track of alot of shows I follow and some I have seen all episodes. It would be nice to be able to hide them until new episodes are registered. In this way you could keep track of your shows, but not have to browse throu shows you have seen. Possible to implement?

Hi Skarek,

thanks for your suggestions! For the language part: this will not happen as this is Android convention. You will have to switch your Androids language to English to get the English translation. However if you feel that the translation is really bad you can either help improve it on crowdin or tell me why exactly and I will consider removing it for now.
The hiding shows part is interesting, a lot of users suggested some sort of automatic grouping. But I like the hiding them yourself part. However I'm currently doing some major background work, so until this comes it might take a while (adding this would not be a lot of work though).

Uwe

Hi Uwe,

Your app is very useful. I like it a lot!

I'm tracking 27 series at the moment. Most are new and a few on re-run, because I'm a real seriesjunkie ;-)

Your app really helps me a lot to manage keeping an overview of them. It's interface is very userfriendly and contains all the right data to keep everything comprehensive.
All the functions I'm looking for in such an app are right there.

There's one thing I'd like to request though. The 'Show Info' page is concise and therefore I'd like to have a 'share button' on the show itself.
Sharing a general description and summary is what I'd rather do than sharing just a single episode.

Maybe haviing season info/summary and a button for sharing seperate seasons of a show would make a good second request.

But you already would me make very happy, having a share button on the general show info page :-)

Hi,

this is no big deal. However what should the text you share be? Title + Overview can be very long for e.g. a tweet. Maybe title + IMDB or tvdb link?
For the seasons there is sadly no summary stored in thetvdb.

Uwe

Come to think of it, I never really tried the share function at all...

I was thinking of sharing the 'movie' poster+title+summary, but that
indeed won't work for Twitter, due to it's limited text length.

It should work for Facebook if it was 'programmed' that way. But I
realise now, it must be the same for all social media platforms to
keep it simple.

Looks like it's maybe a bit more difficult than I assumed at first....

The sharing function of IMDB's own app isn't very good, TVDB hasn't
got it's own app/or web sharing function, so currently I'm using the
sharing functions from TV.com (web).
But not the LIKE button, as it's very limited. Rating a show however
does exactly what I'm looking for; poster+title+summary. Only downside
is that I have to rate a show first...

Better leave it as it is. Your app doesn't really need this,
especially if I'm the only one looking for it.

Thanks for your attention!

I did some research and experimenting and it looks like if I add the IMDB link to the share message sharing via Facebook displays the show poster. So far this affects only sharing of episodes, but I will place a share button in the show details, too, and see what happens if Twitter gets a very long message.

Some more wishes.

An ability to disable the sync/collection of airing time. I live in
Sweden so I have no use of this information. I use the app for keeping
track of my shows only (watched, unwatched, new episodes) (first
airdate is nice to have, but dont need dynamic airing info)

Some kind of %-bar of how much of the show you have seen. I saw this
in one of your competitors and found it quite a nice feature (
http://tinyurl.com/63l4uty )

I wrote about filtering before. Maybe a good function to solve the
filtering would be an ability to tag shows with own tags. Then there
should be predefined tags like "seen all episodes" and "seen none
episodes" etc that would be automatically set (and be dynamic). Then
the user could make own filters (and store them) to show whatever
shows they want. Maybe a switch between filters with a dropdown/draw
up list.

Just some ideas. Still think your app is the best of tracking shows.
Clean, fast and offline.

Hi Uwe,

The GUI of the latest update is certainly different! It's still sleek,
but I'll have to get used to it as it's significantly different from
the previous GUI.

I also noticed the trak.tv option. Didn't know that tv portal before.

But the way trak.tv shares data through facebook is exactly what I'm
looking for!
I could use trak.tv, but if you could implement the datasharing method
in seriesguide it would be great!

Kindest regards,
Ruben

Consider it done :D (have to fix database access first, search does still not use the content provider which causes some rare crashes).

I had planned this all along, but I didn't know, that trakt.tv would do such nice updates with social media. Beautiful if you get things for free ;) So rating support is next with trakt.

Hi team,
Great app.
Do the posters and other images get stored to the respective location where the app gets installed to?
Any chance to add an option to disable all artwork/graphics altogether?
I install to phone for purposes of using your great widget, but I would like to disable the graphics completely to save phone memory space.

Thanks!

Hi Uwe,

I've only recently discovered SeriesGuide but so far I love it! It pretty much does what I need in a very efficient way!

I do have a request similar to Joe's above: Could you provide an option to disable all artwork but with the added option to retain the posters? So having artwork options "All", "Posters onyl" and "None".
The reasoning is this: I don't generally want to see pictures of episodes (usually screenshots). Either I don't want to be spoiled in case I haven't seen the ep, or that one picture is unlikely to remind me of the ep  if I've seen it (reading the text/recap will remind me though). Additionally I'm generally on 3G and not Wifi so the amount of data is relevant. Lastly the saved space by not having the picture there would make things clearer on my relatively small screen (Samsung Galaxy 3 / I5800).
The poster does help to identify shows quickly and only has to be downloaded once per show (as opposed to once per viewed episode), so I guess that warrants special treatment ;)

In any case, thank you for an excellent App!

Hey Uwe,

First of all, thanks for a kick ass job on SeriesGuide. I had been a faithful user of TV Show Favs for many months now, but I eventually got sick and tired of their lack of development and no offline caching. Whenever I wanted to use their app, I had to be online, which annoyed me to no end. I eventually discovered SeriesGuide, and the UI, offline caching, sharing features,..., all do really make a difference. Thank you.

Now, here are a few feature requests that I unashamedly miss from TV Show Favs, and that I would really really love to see in Series Guide, so I can dump that app from my phone:

1. Sync'ing my favorites, watched episodes,... with the cloud, so I could access them easily from another phone without having to mess around with transferring backup files and restoring them. A good way to do this would be to use Dropbox to dump a database file and have it sync there.
2. A to-do list of shows. Right now, if I want to see what episodes I haven't yet seen, I either have to go through each series season by season, or go to the Recent tab in the Calendar and start looking for an unchecked show. Needless to say, it's counterproductive. A "to do" list would simply have only my unwatched episodes, divided by Series (further division by season is unnecessary to avoid complicating things), and a check sign next to them to quickly mark episodes when I see them.
3. A percentage indication of how much of a show I've already seen and how much remains to be seen. That way I can easily spot shows I've completely watched and those with still unseen episodes.
4. A filtering for "Upcoming" and "Recent". Right now, these are a dump of all my shows, meshed together, but my problem is that there are Series that I watch regularly when there's a new episode, and series that I wait until the end of the season to fully download. For example, I couldn't bare waiting one week between two episodes of Dexter, so I wait until the end of the season and get the whole season to watch in a row. In this instance, I don't want to be reminded of every single new episode of Dexter, I also don't want to be tempted to view the description. So what I'd rather have is that each show has a Setting in its popup to ask if it has to be included or excluded from the Calendar.

Now these are a lot of requests, but it would be really sweet if you could implement them in SeriesGuide. Again, thanks for the job you already did on the app, it's definitely a must-have for me at this point.

Hi Uwe,

Just discovered your great app this week.  I really like it, keeps all the series info handy and help me catch up on the series I watch on my Tablet

Here are a few suggestions to improve your already excellent app:
  • Most of the shows I watch are American series and I want to retrieve the English data for them.  But some of the shows I watch are only in French, and there is no English data for these.  If I switch the TVDB language, I get all the details I want about my French shows, but all the American ones are in French too.  Could it be possible to have a general language setting and then override it for certain shows?
  • Some shows are not found by the app search engine (Aveux, MI-5) but I can find them on the TVDB web site.  Could you add an option, "add show by ID" (like aveux is ID 114091, i think) or it might be a bug, to think about it...
  • Some of the show I watch have episodes that I don't want to watch (specials, webisode, making of, really old EP (like for doctor who)), so I would like to filter these out.  Would it be possible to add a "Ignore" status that would not count when calculating a series progress and not show in the main screen of the series.  I know I could tag them as "watched", but you never know, I might want to watch them later.
  • Some of the shows I own on DVDs.  Could it be possible to have a tag for "I own/have"?
  • Also second a kind of "watch queue", where you could order and re-order the shows you have yet to watch.
Feel free to discard any impossible or too wacky suggestions I made. These are just that, suggestions.

Regards, Simon

Awesome app and I'm recommending it to everyone!

Trakt has the concept of an active show, which is one that has been watched in the last 2 weeks. This would be a great addition to SeriesGuide as well allowing you to filter out all of the shows you would like to go back and watch but are not currently watching (I have Star Trek - Enterprise in this category).

Hey, Uwe.  We've talked before via email, back when you were setting up the timezone adjustments.

Anyway, SeriesGuide has come a long way, and it has almost completely replaced my use of TV Guide's official app (this is NOT a promo; SeriesGuide is FAR BETTER!).  The only thing that's missing (for me, anyway) is the ability to add show reminders to my calendar (like TV Guide does).  I know you've already built a great widget to display upcoming episodes, but I'd rather have them show up in the calendar app that I'm already using.

You can already add episodes to your calendar. If you make the episode a recurring event, you get reminded each week. That's still kind of a workaround, but the best I can give you right now.

What about notification reminders like TV Show Favs at a set time before the air (e.g., 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min)? I can't say I miss the feature because I don't really watch a lot of live television but I know it was a large selling point to my friends back in the days when I used it.

When you add an event, only the date and time are set. Could it be
possible to pre-fill some more details like
"Event Name" with the Series title, "Event Location" with the channel
and "Event description" with EP#+ EP Title?

I realize that the channel is not relevant to everyone and EP title
could not be copied over if you make the event recurring, but at least
the series title in the event name would be a good improvment.

Hi Simon,

this already happens. However it only works on stock Android devices as I have to use an unofficial way of doing this. If a manufacturer decides to change the default calendar implementation this will always be broken.
Until there is an official way to add calendar events there is not much I can do.

So, is there no way to automatically add new episodes to my calendar?  You know, maybe check a file to see the last episode loaded to my calendar for a given series, then load any subsequent ones?

I use my Google calendar all over the place (phone, work PC, home PC, home laptop, etc), so it'd be helpful to have my TV schedule follow me, without the headache of having to manually enter each episode.

(the dot in the front means I have seen this episode... do not laugh!!)

Now you already can guess what I miss in SeriesGuide: the German titles of the episodes.
I see all the shows in German TV so to me and probably lots of others this would be quite helpful.
As far as I can see thetvdb.com does not support this - so maybe it is possible to connect to serienjunkies.de - this is where I got my data so far...

Thanks for this app so far,
Thomas

Jamie,

I'm sorry, but no. But SeriesGuide is an open source project (code is on GitHub), so if anyone has an idea and the time to do this, I'm accepting Pull Requests.

Thomas,

you might try going into Settings and changing TheTVDB language to German. After that do an 'Update All'.

Hi Uwe,

brilliant, thank you!!
I also would like to see the English titles somewhere but this is not
very important.
I´m happy enough already! :)

Thanks and bye,
Thomas

Hi,

i'm think to change from TV Show Fav to this one, because i like the look with the transparent backround.
But i've read in the comments on the market that some series are not up to date... At TV Show Fav there no such problems,
because they have 2 sources of their data. First the same you used, together with www.tvrage.com.
Is it possible, for you to change it, that serieGuide uses although two databases, or is it to much work?

greetings

Dennis

Hi (another Time ;-) ),

i download it now to try it and i don't know what to say! This is so
amazing!
Such a great great app! And the series are show in german! That is so
great!
TV Show Fav it already deleted! ;-) And no need of another database.
TV Show Fav don't use the how datadase.

But (there is always a but ;-) ) a small idea.
Is it possible to make 2 "reiter" for the series list? "Series" and
"Favorites" like in the timer "demnächst" and "vor kurzem"?
i think it looks much nicer and not so funny, because the alphabetic
order is interrupted...
In my opinion, then is the app more as perfect!
And Thanks for this really really great app!

greetings

Hi,
Thanks for putting this idea in this great app!
Only a really really small thing ;-)
I think, because of the Favorite Tab it is no longer needed, that in
the all Tab the favorites sorted at the top of the list...

greetings

If you don't like the default sorting, then just change it via the menu!

Ok, here is an idea which occurred to me during the summer (however it only just occurred to me to post it here :)

I think it might fall into the "few lines of code" category - but what do I know :)

Ok, it seems to me that when SeriesGuide displays when the next new episode is coming it either writes a date, or a number of days. There seems to be a cut off point (7 days perhaps?) where it turns from a full date into X number of days left.

Now, my request is in two parts:

1. The first is that the user be able to set the cut off point - for instance I would prefer to know that an episode is 21 days away, than a day (calendars confuse me :) - the default would be the current (7) but the user could change it to anything. No need to be a limit, if the user wants to know the show is 300 days away, thats fine. It would also feel more as a countdown to that favorite show returns.

Now this ties with my second suggestion:

2. During the summer many shows turned into the "continuing" display. (which btw also displays for canceled shows, or shows which haven't started yet) - suddenly most shows on the list were all on hiatus and there was a slew of "continuing" (this is coming up again with the christmas breaks)

Now my suggestion is to auto hide a show from being displayed, if the next episode is more then X days away.

Auto hide means it won't be displayed on the screen, but it is still in the SeriesGuide database, it will still be updated when you update.  It just won't show up UNTIL the next episode is less than X days away - and the user specifies what X is - perhaps the default could be 14 days.

This would be handy if you have a lot of shows because you know the shows you seen on the screen are actually actively broadcasting, but if the show is on the hiatus and won't return for another 6 months, well it won't take up screen space - and when it is about to return it will pop up on your screen again :)

Oh, and the "auto hide" function would be an option of course - if people don't want that they don't have to enable it :)

Auto hide is already effectively implemented as the "Unseen/Upcoming" filter in the dropdown at the very top of the show list. Combine this with the "No special episodes" setting for more effective hiding.

About 1: an Android feature is used here, not much I can/want to change there.

About 2: as Jake said the Unseen/Upcoming filter and current settings should do this in a meaningful way.

Hi Uwe, first of all, congratulations for making the most beautiful app on a tablet! There are only a few apps that make good use of the entire screen and yours is the best looking! :)

For me the app is perfect, except one thing: sometimes I update the episodes I've seen (a few of them each day btw) on my wives tablet.
The problem is she got infected with the Wordfeud virus and is constantly playing that game! So I tried to update the shows on my phone. As you might see yourself this brings sync issues!
So I was wondering, is there no option to sync through Google so the database (only the viewed eps, not the pictures etc) is synced between devices?

Thanks for your great work!

Except, I can't add the limits, so I have no idea on what parameters you base your hiding on.
Also when you say "should do this in a meaningful way." you mean that my suggestion is not a meaningful way?

And I'd still like to see 'x number of days' rather than some date which doesn't mean much.

That's part of the magic, you shouldn't have to worry about how the 'Unseen/Upcoming' filter works. If you want to see what episodes are coming up over a longer period of time, there is the 'Actvitiy' (previously called 'Upcoming') screen. (By the way, if anyone wants to introduce grouping by days into the Upcoming and Recent tabs, I would be happy. I did not get around this, yet.)
