Afro Reggae
Rio de Janeiro’s Afro Reggae is as much a movement as a group. Members
are from the hard scrabble favelas (Brazilian slums), which influences
the lyrics that speak of unity, love, peace and social awareness –
giving voice to the ailments of their ghettos. Led by Anderson Sá’s
passionate, energetic voice, the music is stewed in reggae, funk,
infectious Afro-Brazilian drumming, Hip Hop beats and traditional
sounds. It’s a dance-and-sweat evening that you don’t want to miss!
Our fundraiser takes place earlier this evening. Preferred seating for
fundraiser attendees. See website

FINE ARTS
First Ever Baroque Inspired Figurines Unveiling At
The Brazilian Consulate Gallery. Don't miss it they are uniquely
beautiful!
LOS ANGELES (May 28, 2010) –Brazilian designer Paulo P. Lima unveiled
his first collection of unique baroque inspired figurines at the
Brazilian Consulate Gallery. The exhibition took place on Wednesday,
May 26th and was one of the Gallery’s most successful exhibitions.
After launching a successful collection of figurines, Lima was pleased
to share his collection with the Los Angeles community. Ten figurines
and 14 framed photos were unveiled at the reception. As a result of
his success, Lima sold two figurines and one framed photo, a first for
the Brazilian Consulate Gallery.
Lima’s collection will be open to the public at the Brazilian
Consulate Gallery until August. The following figurines will be
available for viewing: Revelations, Victoria, Anahy-Flor do Ceu,
Destiny, Ebony, Carlotta, Four Seasons and Violet.
"It is truly an honor to share my figurine collection with the Los
Angeles community,” said Lima. “There is no better place to share
a part of Brazil’s rich and diverse baroque art and culture than the
Brazilian Consulate Gallery."
Using hand-crafted felts and hand-dyed silks, Lima creates ensembles
using different kinds of materials found at home, on vacations and
while shopping. These items include materials such as paper, dried
leaves, leather, wool, burlap, sequines and found jewelry.
Lima’s inspiration comes from the Brazilian Baroque art of the 18th
and 19th centuries. While researching designs for the piece The Saints
Play for the Theater Department at California State University, Long
Beach, Lima came across his inspiration.
Each figurine costs between $350 and $1,250. Framed photos range from
$75 - $95.To view the figurines visit the Brazilian Consulate Gallery
at 8484 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 730 Beverly Hills, CA 90211, Monday
through Friday. For more information on Paulo P. Lima and to purchase

Secrets of the Tribe
Brazil, UK | DIR José Padilha
For anthropologists the world over, the discovery of the primitive
Yanomami tribe in the Amazon basin was a landmark event. It caused a
swarm of professional rivals to descend upon the unsuspecting natives
in the name of scientific research. Instead of academic discoveries
however, what resulted was numerous hidden and horrifyingly escalating
scandals, bitter infighting, unethical manipulation, and criminal
abuse, laying irreparable damage to an entire culture. The gifted
Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha gives every party involved a chance
to defend and accuse in their own words, uncovering a rat’s nest of
anthropological horrors.
