BRAZILIAN CARNAVAL IN DOWN TOWN LOS ANGELES
From the energizing sounds of classic samba and Afro-Brazilian music,
to the mind-blowing rhythms of 20 percussionists and shimmying samba
dancers, the 10th Annual Brazilian Carnaval 2010, will be held at Club
Nokia on Feb 20 at 8:00 p.m. As the largest and most authentic
Brazilian Carnaval on the West Coast, here are some points to consider
for a story:
• First time Carnaval is celebrated in the heart of Downtown LA – LA
is the Sister City of Salvador Bahia
• This year’s theme for Salvador Bahia’s Carnaval is “60 years of Trio
Eletrico”
• LA premiere of the historic, musical innovation and true Carnaval
staple of Trio Eletrico –(www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NouKEDoU_k)
• Special guest musician Armandinho – compared to both Jimi Hendrix or
Queen’s Bryan May – will perform in traditional Trio Eletrico style
(www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpQqw5o5VSA)
• Percussionist Chalo Eduardo who has played with Sergio Mendes,
Santana, Mickey Hart, Ricky Martin and most recently at the Latin
Grammy’s with the Queen of Brasilian Samba Reggae music will drive the
dancing with his Brasilian Beat band. (www.youtube.com/watch_popup?
v=mKcWHgF5TSI#t=416)
• Tribute to purveyor of Brazilian music and dance Luiznho – founder
of the first Samba school for homesick Brazilians that ran for 17
years in LA
• Participatory parading choreography lead on the dance floor in
traditional "BLOCO DE CARNAVAL" style.

GRUPO DE RUA: H3
“Raw 21st-century expression... Extraordinarily brilliant." The
Guardian
Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão and his nine-member Grupo de Rua—
all recruited from the lively street dance scene in Rio—open a new
physics-defying chapter in their ongoing project to deploy hip-hop as
a vibrant dance theater form for our time. In their latest work, H3,
Beltrão and company elaborate on a churning, crossover movement style
that brings in elements of krumping, popping and breakdance while at
the same time deconstructing the clichés of contemporary dance.
