Hello friends:
Here are some upcoming events of interest:
Brasil Cultura Funk: Zanzibar’s newest residency launches May 19, 2010
Brasil Cultura Funk is based on the idea that it’s the local Brazilian
communities’ responsibility to expose and celebrate its thriving art
scene beyond its beloved bossa nova and Carnaval. With the current
popularity of artists like Céu and Seu Jorge, who serve up unique and
hip versions of samba and soul, host Carla Rigolin Hassett is betting
on Los Angelinos wanting to know what else “we have to offer.”
Resident band MUAMBA (samba-funk) and resident DJ Sergio Mielniczenko
(KPFK/Brazilian Hour) present local and traveling guest bands, DJs,
visual artists, and other Brazilian and Latin cultural showings on the
3rd Wednesday of each month. Zanzibar is located at 1301 5th St. Santa
Monica, CA 90401.

A native of São Paulo, Carla Rigolin Hassett is "an MVP player in LA
musical affairs seemingly no matter what the genre or mode.” World
Pulse Magazine goes on to say that “if Bebel Gilberto has turned your
head, Hassett will continue to set you swiveling."
Carla will release a new single to the press on May 19th and front
samba-funk band MUAMBA.

BRAZILIAN CHORO AND SAMBA
WITH KATIA MORAES AND TED FALCON
featuring BANDA BRASIL
SAT | 7:30 PM | MAY 15, 2010
General Admission $22
"...Moraes' singing, as always, was a virtual definition of the
passion that is an implicit part of Brazilian music."
- Los Angeles Times
A rare opportunity to see famed Brazilian singer Katia Moraes team up
with choro musician Ted Falcon from the Los Angeles Choro Ensemble.
Choro is considered the first truly instrumental music of Brazil
which originated even before American Jazz... The style often has a
fast rhythm, syncopation which requires a high degree of virtuosity
and improvisation.
The Brazilian singer and lyricist Katia Moraes began her career in Rio
de Janeiro in the 80's with her energetic band "O Espirito da Coisa" .
Since then she has performed and/or recorded with top Brazilian acts
like Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira and Oscar Castro-Neves. Kátia
currently performs with Sambaguru and Pure Samba (which was awarded an
L.A. Treasure Award by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department).
Ted Falcon has had a varied and impressive career as a violinist,
working with such diverse artists as Suzanne Vega, Weezer and
Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil. Though violin is rarely seen in Choro
music, Ted's knowledge and skills within the artform led to a
professorship at one of the most famous music schools in Brazil. Banda
Brasil includes some of the finest Brazilian folk artists in the
country.
THE ENSEMBLE:
Katia Moraes - voice
Ted Falcon - violin and mandolin
Colin Walker - 7 string guitar
Mitchell Long - cavaquinho and guitar
Ami Molinelli - pandeiro and percussion
