VMware Introduces vSphere Big Data Extensions

The increased adoption of Project Serengeti has led VMware to offer a commercially supported version of the technology in the form of VMware vSphere Big Data Extensions, which introduces enhanced enterprise capabilities, including elastic scaling, and an intuitive user interface for administrators to deploy and manage Hadoop clusters on VMware vSphere.  Enterprises can enhance security through virtual machine-based isolation and increase reliability with vSphere Fault Tolerance and vSphere High Availability.  The new capabilities enable enterprise customers to deploy, run, and manage their Apache Hadoop clusters alongside other key applications on a common virtual infrastructure. VMware vSphere Big Data Extensions is available for download today via a public beta program.

VMware reaffirms its support for the open source community and users by continuing to contribute to Project Serengeti. The latest version incorporates support for Apache Hadoop YARN, the next generation of MapReduce, delivers enhancements to virtual machine resource adjustment and recovery from disk failure, and offers extended support for leading Apache Hadoop distributions.
