When I tap a number into the microwave, I try to go +/- 9 to a more interesting number.

It helps me to think of more numbers. Does anyone else do this?

Sort of. The "0" on our microwave is broken and the "1" nearly so, so we are forced to do something else.
Our microwave is more than 30 years old and you can almost see Benford's law in effect, by how worn the number buttons look:

I don't wear abrasive gloves when using my microwave....

But, depending on which type of microwave I use, I might do:
+30sec, +30sec, +30sec, +30sec etc... to get to a multiple of 1/2 min.
or 222 <start>, or 333 <start>, etc...
or simply 1 through 9 for 1 through 9 minutes for microwaves that have to one-key cook option.
all to minimize the number of different buttons I push... (I guess that's a form of OCD)...

I'm not trying to use a prime or fibonacci number, if that's what you have in mind...

This might sound really dumb, but I try to minimize button presses. So if something needs to be heated for 1 minute 20 seconds, I'll just press 77, because that is close to 80 seconds and presses only 1 button. But then I got a new microwave with a touchscreen (which I kinda hate) that doesn't allow this trick. I just push the "+30 seconds" portion of the glass panel.

Very dissastifying.

Ten seconds to warm the cold butter. Hit the '30 second' button, then somewhere around 10, give or take, hit stop, check progress, then either clear or resume. Or, just go full steam ahead until your judgment indicates you should stop. (Good luck with that one.)

By the way, abrasive gloves, or not, I would like to know who (the company) made that 30-year old microwave.

Regards,
Neel
