Kansas City, MO - As certainly as the Earth revolves around the Sun
every 365 days, Republicans in the Missouri Legislature are engaged in
their annual attempt to gut the State’s minimum wage law. This time
House Bill 61 would eliminate the cost of living adjustment that ties
the minimum wage to inflation.
But Missourians are fighting back! The Kansas City Chapter of Missouri
Jobs with Justice, in collaboration with Recycled Rockstar Industries,
is holding a benefit concert to raise money for the Save Our Raise
campaign on Friday, April 22, 2011 at Gusto Lounge, 3810 Broadway,
Kansas City, MO.
Area rock bands Red Kate, Under the Black Sails and Dream Wolf will
perform. Show starts at 9 pm. There is no cover charge but donations
will be gladly accepted. Gusto Lounge has generously agreed to match
donations up to $200. All money raised will go to the Save Our Raise
campaign to cover expenses such as literature, phone banking, and
sending minimum wage and tipped workers to lobby in Jefferson City.
In 2006, 76.4% of Missourians voted to pass Proposition B to raise the
minimum wage in Missouri. Every year since, Missouri legislators have
tried to repeal the minimum wage in some way – targeting tipped
employees, young workers, and now the Cost of Living Adjustment which
protects our most vulnerable workers by ensuring the minimum wage
stays tied to inflation. Without this annual adjustment, Missouri’s
poorest workers would fall further behind every year.
