For Thanksgiving, I dug into the archives for a show I did in December, 2005 about a little Iraqi girl named Alaa.  A U.S. tank shell struck her home in May, 2005, ripping open her little belly, shooting shrapnel into her eyes, seriously injuring her mother, and killing her two brothers and three of her cousins.

Alan Pogue, a Vietnam veteran turned photographer, helped set in motion the work of many people that led to Alaa and her father travelling to Orlando, A law student named Ashley Severance helped find pro bono medical attention.  I recorded a conversation with Severance earlier on the same day Alaa was to be examined to determine if her vision could be saved.  Three and a half months later I learned how things turned out.

On the main segment of the December 5, 2013 edition of Tell Somebody, Peter Maybarduk, director of Public Citizen’s Access to Medicines division, talked about a recent Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) revelation. A November 13, 2013 Public Citizen Press Release announced that a complete chapter of secret TPP text revealing that the Obama administration is demanding terms that would limit Internet freedom and access to lifesaving medicines throughout the Asia-Pacific region was released by WikiLeaks. Maybarduk’s division analyzed the leaked TPP documents for WikiLeaks.

On the December 12, 2013 edition of Tell Somebody,Professor Jim White, Director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research and a professor of Geological Sciences and Environmental Studies talked about climate change. He chaired the committee within the National Academy of Sciences that released a report last week entitled Abrupt Impacts of Climate Change. The report brought to the fore the sudden changes that can occur within our biosphere in a matter of mere years or decades–a red alert for all of us sharing Planet Earth which emphasizes the need for an early warning system to be implemented.

On the day after Christmas, former CIA analyst and Presidential daily briefer Ray McGovern returns to the show to help us look back on 2013.

As an act of conscience, on March 2, 2006 Ray returned the Intelligence Commendation Medallion given him at retirement for “especially meritorious service,” explaining, “I do not want to be associated, however remotely, with an agency engaged in torture.”  He returned it to Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R, Michigan), then-Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Hoekstra added to the Intelligence Authorization Act for FY’07 (HR5020) a provision enabling the government to strip intelligence veterans of their government pensions.  HR5020 passed the full House, but Congress opted instead for a continuing resolution.  Thus, Ray was spared from having to go back to driving part-time for Red Top Cab.

Again, that's the day after Christmas, December 26, 2013 on 90.1 FM KKFI in Kansas City, streaming around the world at www.kkfi.org
