CautionThis procedure may damage the laptop. Other users have reported problems with Ethernet and WiFi after following this advice. It's not clear if those users followed the procedure correctly.
HP ProBooks, ElliteBooks & Business Class Notebooks DO NOT have backdoor passwords, DO NOT answer to Password Cracking Softwares ( due to minimum 8 character passwords & architecture) & DO NOT reset by CMOS battery removal. (due to EEPROM chip which doesn't require electricity to store things).
For other models:I find out that there are some chips so similar to this BIOS chip when you rich to the mainboard, But most of the time it has a personal window if you look through the black plastic cover under the laptop! (like the red circled area above). Find the related code ( may need a magnifier ), search the web to make sure you are right.
Resetting your HP ProBook BIOS Administrator Account can be a tricky affair. The trickiness stems from the fact that your HP ProBook contains sensitive information and without proper security, it can be vulnerable. In order to protect your data, it is important to reset your HP ProBook BIOS Administrator Account following these steps:
Resetting the BIOS administrator password on an HP ProBook laptop can be a daunting task, especially when faced with a locked laptop and no access to the current password. However, with the right tools and knowledge, it is possible to regain access to the BIOS settings. There are various methods that can be used to reset the BIOS password, such as using a password removal tool, booting from a connected USB flash drive, or resetting the jumper on the motherboard. Some users have also found success in entering backdoor passwords or default administrator passwords. It is important to follow detailed instructions provided by experts in the field, such as techman1025, imranromi, and Attif. It is recommended to contact HP Business for further assistance if needed. By following the correct steps, it is possible to reset the BIOS password and restore the laptop to its factory settings within 15-30 minutes. For more information on this topic, refer to resources such as NbDmiFit-2.10.zip file, DP-K Model number, and BIOS update files.
A: To reset your HP Probook BIOS Administrator Password, you can either use a master password or use the HP Probook setup utility. If you have a master password, you can enter it to reset the password. Otherwise, you can boot up using the HP Probook setup utility, which will allow you to access the BIOS menu and reset the password.
I can and have, but since the cloned drive wont boot since the client filled the local drive partition just short of full capacity and i cant adjust the partition size of the new hard drive until i clear the errors on it.
Ok, that did it. i also remember the drive was Win10, which might have been giving me the a problem when i tried resizing it on my other machine. Still cant boot it though, Critical Boot Process failure is still happening.
As to resetting the password that is going to need HPs help and it is not worth it for such an old laptop. There are possible techniques but they risk breaking the motherboard. If you want to pursue that google david zou.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I might have to reload the laptop since i cant get into safe mode and dont have access to a dock that can handle windows 10 at the moment. I still feel better working with a larger drive than the only 128GB hard drive in general.
I thought I would download the BIOS update file from the support site and install it manually. I typed in my computer's serial number, so the site could identify the relevant updates, but this failed with an "unable to detect" error message.
Accordingly, I was presented with three different BIOS updates, and no way to decide which was appropriate to my system (two of them have the same date, so going with the latest doesn't resolve the issue).
I thought I would go into the computer's BIOS to see what version is currently there, hoping this would tell me what the appropriate update is. I was then asked for a password. I have no idea what the password is.
Regarding the bios password, this is a little confusing - your notebook is listed as a consumer model, whereas HP SpareKey is a facility for Business class notebooks, so I may need to give this some more thought
I tried with the physical keyboard and onscreen keyboard. I tried typing some characters and then erasing them to make sure the character entry field had the focus. I rebooted between attempts, so I was only hitting three enters each time. No luck no matter what I tried.
Can you post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your x360 series notebook - you can usually get this by holding down the fn key and pressing esc, otherwise see Here for a guide on locating this information.
Regarding the bios password, I did notice some of the enhancements listed for the bios update mentioned options I'd normally associate with a business notebook - generally speaking, consumer models will generate a halt code after 3 incorrect entries, from which the password can be derived, whereas business models have more stringent security and do not.
by a new x360 15-ap004ng I don't regsiter mothers name and so on, because I only the administrator and not the user. But the right BIOS-password don't give access. The serial-number display after tree retreys is 5CD63060RK. Can somone help me?
HP support are somewhat helpful, in that you can simply open a support case and they will generate an SMC.BIN file. You will need to provide them the laptop serial and UUID (both can be found by pressing escape when powering on the laptop and then pressing F1 for system information at the boot menu.
The SMC.bin file will in theory, when placed in the root of a FAT32 formatted USB drive, inserted into the laptop and powered on whilst holding winkey + up arrow + down arrow gain access to the BIOS without the password. This worked on some of the laptops but the next step is to reset security settings to factory defaults which immediately prompts for the BIOS password- doh!
Please enter some password (wrong password) 3 times, press ENTER and you should receive a new window stating system disabled and a code similar to this one (For HP Mini, should be 10 characters, for others should be 8 characters long) :
I have tried your method 22 times on an HP 10P010 mini laptop with no success. Each time I have to turn the computer off, then restart, put in the suggest passwords, and then get a different error code upon the third try. What am I doing wrong? Please help. as HP wants $215. 49 to reset it and I only paid $300.00 for my grand-daughters Christmas present. (Somebody changed the password, but she doesn't know who.) Thanks, in advance.
Take note of the HP computers password for unlocking and enter it in the system disabled screen , press ENTER. This will unlock your BIOS/reset security settings and PC should be able to start Windows (if WIndows can load).
Most business class notebooks (including yours Elitebook and Probook) have better security. Password cannot be removed here in the forum - you have read correctly - you will have to contact HP Business Support for assistance on removing the password.
HP Business support should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use to reset the password. Note that assistance for such issues is usually free of charge for HP business class computers.
I did acknowledge your difficulties for contacting HP via phone. However, I wanted to let you know this can't be done here in the forum. You may also be able to contact HP Support via web chat >> Open this URL >> -en/contact-hp
1. Save the attached SMC.bin file to a blank USB pendrive.
2. Shut down the notebook. Insert the USB pendrive into any USB port. (If this notebook has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, use a USB 2.0 port.)
(Note: Steps 3, 4, and 5 signal the BIOS of this notebook to examine the USB ports and the HP_TOOLS partition for an SMC.bin file, and if it detects one, to run its command. This SMC.bin file contains the command to allow access into the BIOS as a BIOS administrator without supplying a password.)
6b. On the other hand, if you see no "SMC Command" message of any sort, try steps 3, 4, and 5 again. You may also use a different brand and smaller capacity USB key. If that does not succeed, contact HP support. Pay attention to step 3 - press and hold the 3+1 button at the same time or very very fast one after another.
6c. If you see a message "SMC Command success", then the command has worked. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart the device. Begin tapping the F10 key (or the Esc key) like tap-tap-tap during start, so that the machine will go into the BIOS setup screen. (For this boot only, the machine should let you enter Setup without having to supply an administrator password. If the unit is restarted without performing the next step, the process will need to be ran again).
7. From the File screen in the BIOS, highlight and select the option to "Reset BIOS Security to factory defaults". (This will clear the old unknown password.) Follow the prompts, and restart the notebook when prompted. Reminder: if this notebook uses
BitLocker full disk encryption software, please choose to NOT reset the TPM! If it does not use BitLocker, you can also clear the TPM.
8. If you wish to set a new administrator BIOS password, you may do so on a future boot cycle by pressing F10 and setting a fresh BIOS admin password within the BIOS setup screen.
If there is any difficulty, particularly at steps 6a or 6b, contact HP support
