Alison Campbell, a student at The Science Leadership Academy was honored with the Office Depot Senior of the Month Award.  Also honored were the District chess teams who won first place in their grade categories in the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League Championships; Masterman Middle and High School and Blankenburg Elementary School. The highest school team honors went to: Masterman, first place winner, Cleveland, second place winner, Steel and Blakenburg, third place winners. Congratulations to ALL!

Training for PHA residents: The Urban League of Philadelphia is joining with the Philadelphia Housing Authority to offer a customized version of its Customer Service Training Program to PHA residents. The training program is a free nine-week program that prepares participants for call center and customer care focused careers.  Participants will also receive stipends to cover travel costs. Fathers Are In The House (FAITH) will be sponsoring their annual trip to the Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp on Monday, August 2nd.  On this trip, FAITH will supply each child, grades K-12, with backpacks filled with school supplies and one reading book. From The Education Policy and Leadership Center:  A draft of K-12 standards being developed as part of the National Common Core State Standards Initiative has been released for public comment.  Comments will be accepted through April 2.  Leaders in 51 states, territories, and the District of Columbia (including Pennsylvania) have signed on to participate in the initiative, which is being led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.  Click here to learn more.

The Supportive Older Women's Network  (SOWN) has launched a new program designed to improve the physical and emotional well-being of older adults living in naturally occurring retirement communities in West Philadelphia. From The Education Policy and Leadership Center:  The U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor recently held a hearing on reforming the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) – also known as No Child Left Behind.  The hearing was the first in a series focused on H.R. 4330, known as the “All Students Achieving through Reform Act,” which would establish a new competitive grant program to expand and replicate academically successful charter schools that serve low-income students or students that attend schools with low graduation rates.  To read the panelists’ testimony on this federal proposal, click here.

School Annual Reports: As a commitment to improving education for our children, the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Accountability has developed School Annual Reports. The purpose is to create consistent performance measures for our schools that are publicly transparent. The Parent Guide to the School Annual Reports provides a brief overview of what each performance category and target includes. The Office of Parent and Family Engagement wants at least one parent from each school to volunteer to receive training on Title I related topics and then, share the information with other parents.  Call 215-400-6268 to get more information about the PREP (Parents 'R' Equal Partners) Program.

Information about your child's school's 2008-2009 PSSA (PA System of School Assessment) scores to determine if the school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) are available at http://paayp.emetric.net/  Contact the school or the Office of Parent and Family Engagement for assistance in understanding this information.
