For the record, if you are using link: searches to check backlinks you aren't getting the total number of backlinks to your site.  Google only provides a sample (to minimize the thrashing on their servers to provide that data).  In order to get the full count of links (and where on your site they are pointing to) you need to look in the link tab in your webmasters tools account.  If you don't have a webmaster tools account (and I really don't know why you wouldn't) you can sign up here http://www.google.com/webmasters

by not showing all the backlinks?

 

The advantage for Google is that to compile those links and show them in real time, the link database has to be updated constantly, thus thrashing their already pretty-heated servers.
