It looks like 2008 could be an exciting year. I'm in the process of
building a new mobile robot which will carry a laptop computer and be
used to test the localization and 3D mapping.

The robot presently looks like this:

At present there is only a single stereo camera but I may later add a
second stereo camera looking in the opposite direction. Both cameras
are on a pan and tilt mechanism allowing the robot to get a full view
of its surroundings. Using this together with the SLAM algorithm it
may be possible to build very detailed 3D models.

The robot is also equipped with optical wheel encoders and some
ultrasonics for basic obstacle avoidance within regions not covered by
the cameras.
