on that note i also have a recap of the CitySolar workshop I attended this past saturday with Hirumi and Estefanie.

it was an interesting group but Tracy (the women who runs it) seems to have some pretty good resources at her disposal. In any case… the process was stupid simple… the hardest part was cutting and handling the damn PV panels which break under the slightest pressure. I realize there are different kinds but I've listed the particular supply list below which she forwarded to us.

Here are some pictures from the workshop….

Supplies came from...
solar cells, ribbon wire, flux pens
shop on line at
the diy untabbed solar panel kits,  I got the 40  3x6 untabbed cells version $55

apple makes life hard… to charge apple devices you need to put around 2 volts through the two data lines in the usb cable… most things that require power by usb just ignore those wires. i tried rigging it up but must have screwed it up. got it to charge someone else's phone but not my iPhone. maybe ill tinker more down the line.

each panel is .5 volts… industry standard? so its just about lining em up in series to reach desired voltage output. just had to make sure we could meet the 500mAmps needed to charge the phones.

let me know if you have any other questions about the process.

another awesome solar project… uses arduino to track and follow sun so panels are always facing the sun…
