I personally think the next one would still focus on keeping the finances and relationships afloat and keep the Michelin star hunting for the 4th season? Maybe more intricacies regarding Michael's backstory?
The later seasons of "Shameless" left me disheartened, as they seemed to lose the reverence for the art they had so brilliantly cultivated. While not all of it was disappointing, the magic that thrived prior to Fiona's departure seemed to wane. It felt like the show had fallen out of love with itself.
After a few months after a season has ended, mods will be more lenient with spoilers in the title as it has given sufficient time for viewers to watch, but MAJOR spoilers are still not allowed in post titles.
I broke each episode down into "Great," "Good, "Meh," and "Ya Dingles." Great means they're the best of the season and possibly the series for me. Good means I really enjoyed the episode and can always come back to them happy, Meh means that the episodes didn't have anything wrong with them, I just either found them alright or don't find myself going back to them much, and "Ya Dingles" is for the few episodes that I think have some major issue with them thematically or had some poorly handled idea.
Bros in the City - This episode felt like "the Mall," but fully realized. It really took advantage of the cast, the setting--everything. I love all the bears throwing shade faces and it even though it was obvious they were all gonna be fighting by the end, it felt like they all had organic reasons for actually fighting that made sense with their personalities. Too often this kind of plot just contrives itself by making certain characters jerks for no reason.
Sandcastle - Puberty is going to hit Panda so hard...That aside, while Panda got the most direct focus, they managed to work in characterizing moments for all three bears while also having a great setup because them just building a home for themselves to have even for one episode but immediately losing it was great. Also, Panda getting too into the game and not realizing they were just playing hits extra hard when you've seen the episode "Panda 2."
Lil Squid - The homeless bears going out of their way to find a home for someone who doesn't have one is so sweet. Also, screw the fish Ice Bear ate at the beginning I guess. That kind of implication comes up with most shows involving humanized animals but it's still funny to remember that the episode opened with Ice Bear eating a fish right before they meet the squid.
Go Fish - This episode was just pure fun. I love the fisherman they're with too. "My best friend and my greatest rival? Just like my favorite anime!" That line got me. Also, the bears all screaming in fear with Ice Bear's deadpan "ahhhhhhhhhh" while they do it was hilarious.
Bear Squad - I love the idea of Tabes causing havoc at the city with just the image of the little bird. The setup of the "epic clothes put on" segment followed by them all splitting one uniform was a nice touch. This is my favorite episode to describe to someone who has never seen the show before. "There are three bears living in California and they're brothers. One of them has his anime body pillow die in a collapsing building and she survives."
I, Butler - WBB seems to have a habit of bringing back what seemed like a one time or throwaway character like the human counterparts to the bears. Butler Bear causing more problems was precious.
Mom App - I love this episode way too much and it's even sweeter with the context of the baby episodes where we know the bears don't get to have any lasting sort of parental love or care, so them just getting the app on impulse and going through the different diverse moms (and some great voice talent there) was so much fun. Also, another episode where Ice Bear is flexing. WBB can always try and work in Ice Bear flexing wherever it can. I wouldn't mind seeing the moms again in other scenarios like maybe Gayle owns a restaurant the bears frequent, maybe Tank could have made a cameo in "the gym" or posh mom who's name I'm blanking on right now could work at one of the Cali museums.
El Oso - Most episodes manage to have at least one of the bears, and so this one was one of the deviations where they don't appear, but it was still fun. It raises some questions about Charlie's age but this is a bunch of fun and helped to just have a really out there episode for charlie.
The Gym - They had so much fun with this episode. I think everything but the opening was great. The opening felt a bit confused for how Grizz and Ice Bear are portrayed, especially because Ice Bear being muscular and buff is something brought up twice in the same episode, and while Grizz isn't a god, he's shown to take pride in being active and strong, not to mention he's still pretty physically active. It felt a bit confused to do a "out of shape" moment like that when the same episode hammers home how strong Ice is.I feel like they could have maybe capitalized on maybe the bears having a bit of body insecurity since for example there are multiple episodes where Ice Bear comments on or is a bit upset over his weight and you could really capitalize on that. Maybe Grizz uplifts his brothers and tells them they're both great even if none of them look perfect because Grizz is just that kind of encouraging kind of guy. Maybe Panda tries and fails miserably at trying to find a date with girls at the gym because gyms are one of the most memeable dating locations ever. Also, Ice Bear benching over 300 pounds of granny for reps is the best thing I've ever seen in this show until they proceeded to crush him and hunt him down.
Panda's Birthday: This episode had so many great Ice Bear moments. I'm glad it still kept the feel of WBB meets monsta X instead of "WBB have mishaps with people we didn't take good advantage of" or "watch a Monsta X video that happens to have bears in it." It's a really tricky balance, and I think they struck it pretty well with working in the band and the bears. However, the only part I really disliked was the opening. Panda has been portrayed as whiny in the past and can be a bit blunt at times (particularly to Charlie in episodes like Chicken and Waffles where he gives him a hard time), but this episode felt so unbeliebably annoying at the start with how whiny they made him. I think maybe if they wanted to justify it a bit better, they had a brief montage of things going terribly wrong at his last birthdays like him getting struck by lightning or horrrible things like that and he just wishes he had a normal, peaceful birthday for once, but the way he reacted to Grizz's gift felt really out there even for Panda paired with him crying a bit. I thought for sure that the punchline was going to be that Grizz forged the autograph himself and didn't put much effort into it or something, but even that would feel a bit out of character for Grizz because he would definitely want to get something he knows would make his brothers happy. I guess you could argue that Grizz should have been more attentive to know even something as simple as the right band, but the joke is that S and X sound alike enough that it's a reasonable mistake if you only heard the name.
Baby Orphan Ninja Bears - Grizz literally called some kids some edgy teens and they called him a normie bear. I don't know how to feel about that. Also, they got prince Zuko and American Dragon Jake long's voice actor. I demand a "Last Bearbender" episode just to work in that one pun. "Keep practicing, Bears!" "We won't!" Oh look, Ice Bear met a strange but nice old lady who can also waterbend in the woods. It seems a full moon is coming...
Imaginary Friends - I really love the idea of the bears just getting caught up in power rangers because this felt the most kid-like episode with how much kids get caught up in their imaginary games (shoutout to kid me planning out these exact moments). I love all the cuts to the trouble they're causing for everyone around them and in a way like that almost more than the power rangers references.
Shmorby - Shmorby has an actual twitter account now and he even replied to me. The episode and getting fat, lazy bears was fun. Time to headcanon that "The Gym" takes place right after "Shmorby" and suddenly everything makes sense. I don't know how to feel about anime Shmorby and I love Panda bringing attention to the fact that Shmorby is the one who put them in danger in the first place.
Tabes and Charlie - Great premise and idea, but pretty lackluster execution. I don't really feel it was paced in such a way that led to any interesting scenarios and the bears burn everything down for the millionth time.
Ramen - This episode doesn't have anything bad about it, but it did feel like it had so many missed opportunities for character moments for the bears and it felt like it focused a bit too much on the person of the week they hang out with without giving us insight into the bears as well.
Ranger Norm - This is probably my least favorite episode in the entire series. It felt like a series of contrivances from start to finish and while the animation was on point, it felt like it was written as a way to get in different setpieces without focus on how the characters interact with each other or why. Why does the guy just happen to be evil and why would he bother going so far to put on a convincing act if he was gonna drop it all the moment he was found out without any resistance? Why make the bears so hostile to him for no reason at the start? I think this would have worked better if they instead had Tabes being evaluated as a Ranger and so the other rangers that show up could be potential replacements, that way the bears have actual reason to be dismissive and maybe a bit hostile. Then you can do it like a whodunnit where Tabes sees that one of them isn't who they say they are since most of her episodes employ a lot of crime and mystery tropes.
