Antropocentrism is the hallunication in society of regarding humans as the central element of the universe. It involves interpreting reality exclusively in terms of human values and experience, often without understanding of what is really happening..

There are many examples of how this lack of understanding has led to mistaken attempts to emulate nature in providing services. An example is the installation of desalination plants to provided communities with potable water anf or irrigation. The hydrological cycle is how natural forces have use energy from sunshine to supply water in rain and snow for eons with an ecological cost (such as the damage due to floods) that is remedied over time by other natural forces. It has been and will coninue to be a major factor in natural operations such as plant growth and organisms operations.

De salination plants provide potable water by using electrial energy (often from coal fired power stations emitting the greenhouse gases contributing to climate disruption and ocean acidification and warming). Ironically, these plants need cooling water circulated by using electriacal energy in their operation. These plants are made of irreplaceable materials and have limited lifetimes so their operation is unsustainable process. So they are an eco costly emulation, not substitution, of the hydrological cycle.

That is, they are a common example of the failure of costly technological systems to emulate freely available natural processes. Despite these failings, proponents argue that desalination plants are often justified to meet the range of needs of industrialized civilization when what is freely available from natural operations is insufficient.

There is failure to understand that systems such as desalination plants are only temporary expedients. Installing these expedients as the population and infrastructure (and severity of climate change) grow only makes the inevitable collapse of the infrastructure and the die off of the population harder to deal with.

Gerry,
There are simple physical principles (described in science courses) that govern the operation of the hydrological cycle (and other natural cycles including the seasons). These are simple cycles occurring all the time. They are not caused by climatologist cycles with periods of eons (until industrialization caused a very rapid disruption). No reputable scientist refers to what happened in the 1970s as a 'cooling cycle'. The simple fact is that rapid global warming (atmospheric and ocean) has been occurring for over a hundred years and is continuing largely because of the emissions from using fossil fuels to supply energy to operate technological systems.
Volcanic eruptions have played a significant part in providing fertile soil in compensation for other natural processes. However, there isno sense in comparing these long term natural processes to what industrialization has done in the short term.
What some politicians have to say has nothing to do with rational consideration of what decisions should be made about cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions. Ironically, those who fly to Paris for COP21 do not realize for one moment that the demise of airline travel for most persons is certain in the not too distant future as jet fuel gets beyond reach for most airlines and other aircraft operators. Of course, lack of fuel oil for the 90000 cargo vessels will pose another major problem for governments conditioned to believe in free trade.

Very good letter Denis, but if I may pick a bit at it?

1) You write:

The hydrological cycle is how natural forces have use energy from sunshine to supply water in rain and snow for eons .... .

So natural forces have used, for eons, energy to supply water etc. OK, that makes sense and we see this sort of cycle in ice caps at the Poles etc. So, if there is a hydrological cycle I would ask how this ‘cycles’ over time. Can we say that there are climatological cycles which cause this ebbing and flowing of water, which has been going on since well before mankind started making the waves on Earth that he has been doing for a very long time? If there are climatic cycles, then why can we not see something like this happening in the next decade or so with a reversion to a cooling cycle? This is what the scientists in the late 1970s said we had before the GW crowd took over.

2) You write – oh so correctly,

Antropocentrism is the hallunication in society of regarding humans as the central element of the universe. It involves interpreting reality exclusively in terms of human values and experience, often without understanding of what is really happening..

*    *    *    *

Very true indeed! If an exploding volcano puts more junk into the air than mankind can ever dream of doing, then why are the cognoscenti today assuming that mankind is the be all and end all of climate change and that the wretched Paris conference next month will “save the planet”? Paris politicians are even claiming that “the future of mankind is at stake” as if mankind has any control whatsoever on what climatological cycles can do all by themselves! An absurd conference and I hope Putin of Russia (who is a strong doubter shall we say) of GW will put all of this into his speech he is going to give there. I hope so.

What will happen will happen and cycles will settle our hash one way or the other. Mankind has no input into this, but anthropocentrism claims otherwise. Merkel knows this as does the EU government in Brussels. When will mankind start to look at cycles and not thinking he is the end result of intellectual perfection?

Wonderful cartoon someone sent me, which I hope goes through.
