This discussion about pipelines just indicates the lacking in foresight to those making decisions about the use of irreplaceable natural resoures. The energy and materials used to install, operate and maintain the vast array of oil, gas, water and other (including sewerage) pipelines during their limited lifetime may well be worthwhile. But it is not a sustainable process. How will society cope with the predicament when they are no longer useful?

What I think is going to happen is that the real movers and shakers in DC (and this will definitely be true under President Clinton) are looking to damage Canada’s economy so that when the hue and cry from parched California is heard, the inexperienced Trudeau will allow the pipelines to be built ... to the lakes in the NWT!

The rejection reeks of hypocrisy. Obama is turning his back on Canada’s oil while making a deal with Iran that enables it to push its oil in the global market, undermining North American supplies

Indeed, IHS Energy, the global energy consultancy, said the No. 1 beneficiary of Obama’s decision will be Venezuela and other heavy oil producers that ship to the Gulf Coast by tanker. “Venezuela heavy crude is similar to oilsands in both quality and greenhouse gas intensity and will continue to be consumed by U.S. refineries in the absence of access to Canadian crude oil,” said IHS vice president Jim Burkhard

The denial is also a wake up call to all Canadians. In turning down KXL, Obama stood side by side with environmental activists who want to shut down a big part of Canada’s energy economy.
Those same groups were gloating Friday that the KXL win is just the beginning and that Canadian energy projects are next on their hit list.
“If Big Oil thinks that after Keystone XL the protesters are going home, they’re going to be sorely surprised,” Bill McKibben, co-founder of the U.S. environmental group 350.org, said in a statement. “Today in Canada, dozens of people are risking arrest at Prime Minister Trudeau’s residence as part of the ‘Climate Welcome’ action to urge him to put an immediate freeze to tar sand expansion.”
That’s blatant interference by U.S. groups deploying deplorable tactics to influence choices that are Canada’s to make.
