The latest innovation in the information revolution is the blockchain. It is a means of handling the transfer of information more systematically and rapidly. Banks are among the institutions assessing the gains and risks associated with this application of telecommunication technology. But they are only assessing the risks associated with the handling of the information. As usual, it is fallaciously presumed that the necessary technical systems will continue to be available even as components age and fail and the natural resources used in their manufacture are irreversibly used up. Blockchain is one of the mnay doomed processes of industrialized civilization that are going to have a worrying impact on what many people can do in the future. Ironically, it is the well off in societyy who will have the greatest problem of handling this loss of service.
