Thunderbird 16.0.2 and problem with send later

Dear Jonathan,

I've just updated my thunderbird version to 16.0.2
To my surprise the send later (version 4.0.6)which was added to my thunderbird didn't work.
I update my Send Later extension to 4.1.4, and I still have problems. When the due time to send email arrives, an error appears which says a problem occurred in in sending email and it fails!

Would you please guide me?

Please send the exact error you are seeing and where you are seeing it, e.g., in a pop-up window vs. in the error console.

It say your outbox maybe corrupted and an unknown error number appears in a pop-up window..

Did you follow the instructions at the URL given in the error message?

If not, please do so.

If it doesn't help, please check your error console (Tools | Error Console) for an error that gets logged there when Send Later tries to send messages from your Outbox, and email that error to me or the list for me to diagnose the issue further.

I follow the instruction in the given URL but it didn't work and I've received the same pop-up error.

I've attached screenshots of errors, messages and warnings and really appreciate if you take a look at them and guide me how to solve the problem.

Hi Navid,

Please try this for me...
  1. Compose a test message.
  2. Do File | Send Later to pop up the Send Later dialog.
  3. Click the "Put in Outbox" button.
  4. Open your Outbox folder underneath Local Folders and confirm that the message was placed into your Outbox.
  5. Go to the File menu and check if "Send Unsent Messages" is greyed out or if you are able to select it.
  6. If you are able to select it, do so and see if your test message is successfully delivered from your outbox.
Please let me know the results.

Hi Jonathan,

I've tried your step:

1. When I delete all delete the two files named "Unsent Messages" and "Unsent Messages.msf" from the thunderbird Local Folders directory, and then click on the "Put in Outbox", the email places in Outbox folder and I am able to select the "Send Unset Messages" tab in the File Menu. But Nothing happens.

2. After that, I tried some other messages, put them in Outbox via Send Later Pop-Up dialog, and the messages places in Outbox folder. But the "Send Unsent Messages" is grayed out then and I could not click on it (until I delete the mentioned two files from Local Folder directory in my hard-disk).

I was afraid of that. You're the second person to report this issue to me. It's not actually an issue with my add-on; it's some sort of issue with Thunderbird itself, and the only solution I've been able to find is to create a new Thunderbird profile.

I'll file a bug ticket about it, but I'm not optimistic. I may need to ask you for more information about it if somebody from the Thunderbird dev team gets back to me in response to the ticket.

Dear Jonathan,

What do you mean from create a new Thunderbird profile? Do you mean I should re-install my Thunderbird?

If I backup my Thunderbird via MozBackup, re-install it and then restore my backup, does it fix the problem? and my accounts in Thunderbird fully restore in order to install Send Later and use it?

Hi Navid,

By creating a new Thunderbird profile, I mean opening the Profile Manager, creating a new profile there, launching Thunderbird with that new profile, and recreating your accounts, add-ons, etc., in the new profile.

I do not know if using MozBackup to restore everything within the new profile will do the right thing. It is possible that it will, but it is also possible that MozBackup will copy over into your new profile whatever is broken in the old one.

To be clear... I haven't been able to figure out exactly what it is about the user's current profile that is sometimes causing this issue, but I know that (a) it's not related to my add-on, since as you observed, it occurs even when Send Later isn't installed, and (b) switching to a new profile makes the problem go away. Sorry I don't have anything more concrete than that to tell you.

I do not know what else may be affected. The only effect I've heard about is this one.
