Seven Tips for Disaster Preparedness

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month

Preservation Leadership Forum Blog

Post Katrina and Sandy, the United States is seeing increasingly severe weather events resulting from global climate change. At risk in this sobering trend are our cherished historic resources.

http://blog.preservationleadershipforum.org/2014/08/18/seven-tips-preparing-disaster/#.U_r5YY2A2P8

1. Read the hazard mitigation plan.
2. Reach out to the local emergency manager.
3. Reach out to the state emergency management office and state emergency manager.
4. Know the land use ordinance and local planning documents.
5. Understand FEMA’s role in a disaster.
6. Know the local historic preservation champions.

7. Think big picture

There are many ways in which historic buildings and objects can survive a disaster. Having a comprehensive plan is critical. You can't underestimate the value of having a "dry run" before the earth shakes, the waters rise, and/or the forest ignites. Each type of disaster is different and has its own parameters for response and recovery. This blog is a good summary and introduction to emergency preparedness for colleagues interested in exchanging comments and experiences.
