Future CmpBuffers available for testing

I had a change of heart.
Given the earlier user input, it makes sense to me to first offer the next version for testing before offering it to Sammy for inclusion in TSE.
I did not implement all requests, but I think I addressed the main ones, and I moved the rest to the COULD and WONT parts of its TODO list.
