On opening a file the FileTabWidth extension determines each file's individual tab width, sets TSE's tab width to it, and maintains
the determined tab widths when switching between files.
V1 turned out to have significant bugs. Sorry!
V1.1 fixes these, which also required a small functional change.

Suppose the file contains all tabs, and no spaces to figure out what a 'tab' is? How are you deciding how large the tab should be?

The program allows you to configure a "default tab width".
When you install the program, this default tab width is initialized with your old TSE tab width.
So to answer your question, in the case a file's tab width is not determinable, the default tab width is used.
