Is there a way you could let us specify:
(1) Background image
(2) Opacity
To use that for an editor background rather than just a solid color?
On Windows you can render two off-screen buffers, and overlay the image. and then AlphaBlend the TSE frame buffer.
It would slowdown the display mildly, but it would be a worthwhile tradeoff IMO. My aging eyes don't like to see big panels of a solid color any longer. I modified Visual FoxPro to use _screen.Image = "c:\images\colorful_lion.png" as an image background. And created an app to also randomly select an image from that folder.
