Hello, I just downloaded release candidate 24 for Windows. This is a bug report and some personal suggestions.

1. Rename the installation executable from "tse.exe" to "tse_install.exe" or "setup_tse.exe" so it is clear to anyone viewing the filename that this is an installation program, not a standalone editor.

2. The first customization option reads:
"Customize the Console editor (e32.exe) now or accept the default settings?"

It is very possible or even likely that the user has an earlier edition of TSE installed in a different directory. Could you offer the option to import the config settings of an existing TSE installation? This would remove manually re-entering this info again. Suggested:

"For the Console editor (e32.exe), import settings from an existing directory, customize the settings, or accept default settings?"

You could offer a similar import option for the GUI editor as well.

3. When the choice to choose color schemes appears, the choice cannot occur because the file "colors.mac" does not exist yet.

TSE-install-screen-1.jpg

Trying to choose color schemes results in this error:
TSE-install-screen-2.jpg

The file "colors.mac" will be created AFTER the setup is chosen, so it's not here now.

4. Recommendation: In the "doc" directory, there are 4 files with the extension *.doc. I know that this is years old, but since that file extension has been claimed by Microsoft Word, wouldn't it be better to change the extension to *.txt? And along the way, maybe get rid of the IBM graphics line-drawing characters that are not used in a meaningful way?

Finally, thanks for the acknowledgement in the "read.me" file. I don't deserve any credit, since I contribute so little. But my last name is spelled "Pement".

Thanks a whole lot for your effort, Sammy. I appreciate it and am glad to use TSE and recommend it to others!!

Eric,

Because I had a hand in them, let me address the first two of your four points.

> 1. Rename the installation executable from "tse.exe" to "tse_install.exe"

If you download Windows TSE from my website instead of Semware's, then it comes with three extra files:
readme.txt
setup_as_administrator.cmd
setup_as_user.cmd
Semware used to do the same for a few releases, but reverted their choice.
Maybe your suggestion will have them reconsider.

> 2. [Summary of Eric's suggestion: Inherit TSE settings from another directory.]

What I learn from your suggestion is, that unfortunately it is not documented that TSE's setup will inherit an existing TSE directory's settings and more if you install TSE to the existing TSE directory.

So a simple solution to your implied problem is to copy the existing TSE installation's directory to a new directory, and then install TSE to the new directory.

I will document this in the above readme.txt that comes with the TSE download from my website.

>>1. Rename the installation executable from "tse.exe" to "tse_install.exe" or "setup_tse.exe" so it is clear to anyone viewing the filename that this is an installation program, not a standalone editor.

If install or setup is in the name, then the editor requires admin privileges, which not everyone has.  But Carlo's solution is a good one, something which I should look into again.

>>2. The first customization option reads:

I think Carlo's answer summarizes this one.
But, the install program should tell you that it can be installed over an existing TSE, and inherit the settings.  Carlo wrote all of that, and it is very cool!

>>3. When the choice to choose color schemes appears, the choice cannot occur because the file "colors.mac" does not exist yet.

Ugh.  That is a problem.  At first glance, there is not an easy fix.  Maybe that code should be moved to after most of the editor has been installed?

>>4. Recommendation: In the "doc" directory, there are 4 files with the extension *.doc. I know that this is years old, but since that file extension has been claimed by Microsoft Word, wouldn't it be better to change the extension to *.txt? Yes, definitely a good idea.

>>Finally, thanks for the acknowledgement in the "read.me" file. I don't deserve any credit, since I contribute so little. But my last name is spelled "Pement".

I do it poorly, and end up missing lots of folks, but I try to credit everyone who reports a bug or a suggestion that I can implement.  Your names spelling has been updated.  You're in good company - I've misspelled Carlo's and Knud's names many times :(

Actually my name is not really

Knud Van Eeden

but instead

 Knud van Eeden

(thus with a lower case 'v').

If you when you have time could change it globally in the read.me would be great.

;-)

Thanks
with friendly greetings
